Media Matters reports on a Fox News discussion between Bil O'Reilly and Newt Gingrich on protests against the California gay marriage ban:

O'REILLY: OK, now, the culture war. I know you've been flying around the country, and you're doing stuff. In the last three or four days, this is really nasty stuff. I mean, you know, hyper -- we're gonna show you some of the video. A woman getting a cross smashed out of her hand. We had a church in Michigan invaded by gay activists. We're gonna show you the video on Monday of that -- we have exclusively. We had a guy in Sacramento fired from his job. We had boycotts called on restaurants.

I mean, it is getting out of control, very few days after the election. How do you assess that?

GINGRICH: Look, I think there is a gay and secular fascism in this country that wants to impose its will on the rest of us, is prepared to use violence, to use harassment. I think it is prepared to use the government if it can get control of it. I think that it is a very dangerous threat to anybody who believes in traditional religion. And I think if you believe in historic Christianity, you have to confront the fact. And, frank -- for that matter, if you believe in the historic version of Islam or the historic version of Judaism, you have to confront the reality that these secular extremists are determined to impose on you acceptance of a series of values that are antithetical, they're the opposite, of what you're taught in Sunday school.

For a dose of reality, here is video of some of the protests:

The religious right in this country is fighting a losing battle. It's only a matter of time before gay marriage is legalized in this country. As with many discrimination issues in our history, change doesn't happen overnight. This rights issue by gays is no different than the civil rights movement by African-Americans or the women's suffrage movement.

"... gay and secular fascism...," Mr. Gingrich? As opposed to the corporatist, quack right variety of fascism wrapped in Old Glory and waving a King James Bible claiming it all comes from Christ such as you have been espousing since you launched your despicable travesty of "The Contract [on] America?"

Hypocrisy, thy name remains GOP and the likes of Newt Gingrich the adulterer.

I have never had a gay person try to force anything on me. They have hit on me a few times, but never forced it. Religious people on the other hand are always telling me what I can and can't do. They also get very rude when you ask them for the 3rd time to get off your porch.

I have a sign on my front yard by the walkway that reads "No Solicitors." If I had a nickle for every time some "religious" true believer tacitly ignored that sign and rang my bell, I'd have retired by now in style with full health care.

The best part is when I inform such true believers who chose not to "render unto Caesar" and respect my sign that yes, indeed not only are they soliciting, but they're trespassing, and subject to arrest for their troubles.

Christian is as Christian does.

Roger that!
I have taken to calling all missionaries "salesmen", as that is what they are. They sell their religion for 10% of my income.

What is with the Jehovah's Witnesses bringing their little kids along carrying miniature briefcases? Too weird!

If they have kids with them, maybe people won't threaten them to get them to never come back. I grew up down the street from those secretive wierdos (Kingdom Hall), and physical threats by me were the only way to get them to leave our house off thier list.

The True Believer, by Eric Hoffer, explains Gingrich perfectly--he doesn't believe this stuff, but he tells it to the useful idiot foot soldiers of his party to exploit their numbers. He knows darn well the left is rarely violent, while the right has people buying guns and talking murder, but if he uses that message then he fails to draw power to himself.

And no man in recent memory has been in love with power so much and so thoroughly. Gingrich, Rove and Cheney are cut from the same cloth. Lies are tools with them, and the greater the lies, the more useful the tool.

No one is threatening "traditional religion" as Gingrich states. It is the seperation of State and these "traditional religious" values that is important. People are protesting the taking away of civil rights of a group of Americans and pointing to the efforts of some religions to make that happen. It has also been "traditional" for Women to be second class citizens for thousands of years, that has changed dramatically in many ways in our country and some others, even though it has a ways to go. Should that not have changed because it existed and was"traditional" for centuries around the world?

Well...there you go again with the "belief in religion" thing.

I believe in Christ...not in religion.

Can this guy get any more irrelevant?

Why is Gingrich, disgraced former Speaker, EVER trotted onto TV for his opinion about ANYTHING??

This guy was so stupid he was engaged in extramarital sex while pushing impeachment of a President for having extramarital sex. Duh.

Where is this video of a woman getting a "cross smacked out of her hand"? Or the video of gays "invading" a Michigan church? I'm thinking it's all made up, like the story the wingbats were circulating about the ballots in a car trunk in MN.

I just answered my own question about the woman with the cross:

Ok, the crowd at the palm springs rally wasn't exactly, uh, lacking for intense emotion. However, let's keep this in perspective: this old lady went down to that Prop 8 rally literally waving a cross in their faces. She was taunting the crowd. Effectively she was saying, at the very least, "Gay marriage is inconsistent with christian values," and it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to suggest that what she was really saying was that they should repent for they are all sinners. In either case, she is taunting the crowd, which was very stupid. How do you think black folks would have reacted to some old lady bringing a noose to a march in 1965? Not very well. Why did she feel she needed to bring her cross to this demonstration? If you smack a hornet's nest with a stick don't blame the hornets when they sting you. This woman is an idiot. I have no sympathy for her.

religion is not the problem. it's our inability to separate religion from government. once we truly separate church and state, America will be fine.

When gay activists escalate the violence and nastiness of their protests to the level of anti-abortion protesters (including murder), then these guys will have something to talk about.
