I Like ItI Don’t Like It

GQ has named Barack Obama one if its "Men of the Year" with a cover and article — penned by Senator Ted Kennedy — that went to press before Election Day.

Obama is joined by Michael Phelps, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Jon Hamm, each of whom grace one of GQ's four "Men of the Year" covers.

GQ named Obama "Game Changer of the Year," and an excerpt of Kennedy's piece appears below:

As I write this, Barack Obama and John McCain have just completed their final debate, and the country is a few short days away from a historic election. Of course, I'm doing all that I can for my candidate. But whether he wins or loses, Barack Obama has ushered in a new era of American politics with a limitless vision of a better future that will endure for many years to come. Through his candidacy, Obama has provided a glimpse of a stronger, better, fairer America, where change comes from the bottom up, where we all come together to meet the great challenges of our time. He has inspired millions of new voters of all ages, races, and incomes to lend their voices for real change. For in this man, Americans can see not just the audacity but the possibility of hope for the country that is yet to be....

That is what I saw when I enlisted in his campaign. I saw new hope for a way out of the economic wilderness and for a just and fair prosperity that rewards the many and not the few. New hope that this nation will at last lead the world to turn the tide of global warming and turn aside from an energy future that threatens the future itself. New hope that we will teach all our children well. New hope--and this is the cause of my life--that we will guarantee for every American quality affordable health care as a fundamental right and not as a privilege. New hope--and this is the great cause of America itself--that we shall overcome once and for all the setting of race against race, gender against gender, ethnic group against ethnic group, and straight against gay.

Win or lose, with the Obama candidacy the torch has been passed, and I hope I made a difference.

Read Kennedy's full article about Obama here. The "Men of the Year" issue goes on sale nationally November 25, and will be online at gq.com tomorrow morning.

The cover shot, which appears below, was taken by Mark Seliger in Philadelphia on October 3. The photographer was only given 1 minute, 45 seconds for the entire shoot:

This inside black and white shot was taken by Seliger at a rally in Grand Rapids, Michigan on October 2:

The issue also includes photographs of Ted Kennedy — declared a "Legend" by the magazine — at his home in Hyannisport, MA on October 14. One of the photos appears below:

Of course it's not a reason to vote for him. Who said anything about voting for him because he's hunky dunky? Nobody. But who's going to complain about getting a smart, talented man in the white house who's also too sexy for his shirt? Not me.

And if you're worried about people voting for a candidate based on "sex appeal," you need to talk to Sarah Palin's supporters.

christ. you're being really pessimistic and annoying on this forum, like you're looking for a fight. this thread is clearly about people giving into gossip, chatter, and casual talk. obviously people aren't discussing policy on this thread so get over it.

As a multi-racial person who has lived in Europe before becoming a US resident and later a citizen, I must say that this country offers the most hope to the world. I can understand how the first Europeans felt when they fled religious persecution and other indignities and came to this country. Even if they were not inclined to live peacefully with the native Americans back then, today there is a chance for the nation to live out its creed, Out of many, one. The descendants of those who fought to end the slave trade and abolish slavery are still working to bring an end to bigotry and racial prejudice.

I am in tears, thanking them with all my heart for their courage in daring to be different, to help in bringing about social justice, and to elect the best person to lead this country, even though it meant someone who is not a part of the majority to which they belong.

This could never happen anywhere else in the world, but america has heralded a new epoch. The American dream belngs to us all, and I am proud to be an American.

To those who still mourn Obama's victory, you have nothing to fear. It's not so much that you'll lose your privileges; it is more of sharing them with others. Do not resist what it happening, for the universe demands it happen now. It is time.

The fact for the matter is, you have been sharing by force already.

Make yourself feel confortable, don't pay your taxes and then see what forces will come to bare.

I pity you.

Oh take your meds. No one is going to force anything on you. But you don't have more rights than any one else. It's time EVERYONE has the rights guaranteed under the constitution, not just the few.

These "fears"....that your guns will be taken away, that somehow, by restoring the Constitution of the United States, you will "lose" rights, just smacks of downright paranoia. Thinly veiled.

Some people sure like to cling to hate; does it keep you warm at night?

You did nothing yourself to earn your privileges; you were born to them by virtue of your race. But it doesn't mean that in order for you to feel good about yourself, you have to deny those privileges to others. And hate them too. There are enough people of goodwill in America of the same race as yourself, not so small-minded and selfish and fearful that they become blind. Look at what negativity has tone to the Republicans. It has caused the party to implode. I am confident that the number of those who share your views will diminish and in time, with a little education will realize what America is all about.

I suspect that you, like the majority of Americans, are the child of immigrants and not native to the soil, so it is ludicrous to feel any more special than any other immigrant. Some of us have come here willingly, and others were brought by force. But here we are, under the same flag.
