Time magazine reports that in his new book, Do The Right Thing: Inside the Movement That's Bringing Common Sense Back to America, Mike Huckabee settles some old scores.

Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee is not the sort of politician who likes to bite his tongue. But that's just what he has found himself doing over eight months since he ended his surprising and colorful presidential campaign.

What does he think is wrong with the Republican Party? What does he think of his former primary rivals? What is the best direction for the conservative movement? To each question, he answered only in broad strokes, refusing to get too specific or pointed. He was writing a book, he would say. It will come out after the election. He will "name names." Just wait and see.

On Tuesday, that book will arrive on store shelves, and in terms of payback, it will not disappoint.

On Mitt Romney:

Huckabee writes that the former Massachusetts governor's record was "anything but conservative until he changed the light bulbs in his chandelier in time to run for president." He notes that Romney declined to make a phone call of congratulations after Huckabee beat the oddsmakers to win the Iowa caucuses, "which we took as a sign of total disrespect." He mocks Romney for suggesting, during one debate, more investment in high-yield stocks as a solution to economic woes. "Let them eat stocks!" Huckabee jokes.

Fred Thompson:

"Fred Thompson never did grasp the dynamics of the race or the country, and his amazingly lackluster campaign reflected just how disconnected he was with the people, despite the anticipation and expectation that greeted his candidacy," Huckabee writes.

Conservative Christian Leader Gary Bauer:

[Had] an "ever-changing reason to deny me his support." Of one private meeting with Bauer, Huckabee says, "it was like playing Whac-a-Mole at the arcade -- whatever issue I addressed, another one surfaced as a 'problem' that made my candidacy unacceptable." He accuses Bauer of putting issue of national security before bedrock social issues like the sanctity of life and traditional marriage.

John Hagee:

Huckabee speaks to Hagee by phone before the McCain endorsement, while the former Arkansas governor is preparing for a spot on Saturday Night Live. "I asked if he had prayed about this and believed this was what the Lord wanted him to do," Huckabee writes of his conversation with Hagee. "I didn't get a straight answer."
The Club For Growth:
"I don't take issue with what they believe, but the smugness with which they believe it," writes Huckabee, who raised some taxes as a governor and cut other deals with his state's Democratic legislature. "Faux-Cons aren't interested in spirited or thoughtful debate, because such an endeavor requires accountability for the logical conclusion of their argument."

UPDATE Mitt Romney has fired back:

Asked to respond, Romney spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom said Huckabee was acting small.

"This type of pettiness is beneath Mike Huckabee," Fehrnstrom. "If we're going to move the party forward, we need to offer more than personal recriminations. Unfortunately, in this book, Mike Huckabee is consumed with presumed slights, and he seems more interested in settling scores than in bringing people together."

See what happens when you let the Party marginalize itself while pandering to the religious right? You get people who say crap like this and think it's OK.

And I thought it was supposed to be the dems who have "lights on, nobody's home" syndrome when it comes to nat'l security.

Jeez.

If he truly believes that all choice is God's, than Huckabee is just furious at God's choice.

Here's a fun fact for everyone. Why did the Huckster register as Little Rock department stores on the wedding registries just before the end of his term as governor, despite the fact he has been happily married for decades?
Because a loophole in Arkansas law with regard to gifts and pay offs to politicians allows an exception for gifts from wedding registries.

Folk they are all rotten to the core the whole bunch of crooked GOP bananas.

Wait, let me get this straight, Huckabee complains that (1) someone put the issue of national security before bedrock social issues like the sanctity of life and traditional marriage and (2) Rev Hagee (Catholics & Jews are the spawn of the devil) didn't give him his endorsement...

Am I supposed to respect this man somewhere, somehow?

Huckabee is no different than the rest of the GOP. How can a political party aspire to be inclusive and "Big Tent" while condemning and driving away minorities, gays, women, "liberals" and people of any religious faith other than born-again Christianity? It can't, and until the GOP drives a stake into the heart of its religious conservative core once and for all, it is DOOMED to extinction in the 21st century...Sarah Palin or no Sarah Palin.

"Do The Right Thing: Inside the Movement That's Bringing Common Sense Back to America?" I wonder if that includes Huck's desire to conform the US Constitution to the Bible. That is exactly what he said at a campaign rally of reborn whatevers.

No logic from Romney's polyviewed camp: Either he is that small/petty, therefore capable of convincingly "acting" so, or being that petty/small is "beneath" him, Fehrnstrom. Make up your mind.

Seems about right to me, Huckabee: put "sanctity of life" and "traditional marriage" as top priorities while we are being overrun by the barbarians who oppose "sanctity of life" and aren't so much against extramarital sex-by-force either.

Smart dood, if one considers having one's head so far up one's extremist religionutism as being the epitome of intelligent.

Both Huckabee and Romney are now non-players on the national scene. The future belong to Sarah Palin. ;-)

False. "God" just spoke to me, and He says he NEVER speaks to Huckabee. Or to Hagee. Or to Romney. Or to Newt Getrich. Or to Sarah -- who wouldn't be able to keep her mouth shut about what "He" said to her.

Of course the Republicans don’t get it. They say America is a center-right country. Yes, the surface waves of the nation are often seen blowing to the right, but the main undercurrent is always moving leftward, so that that yesterday’s center-right dudes come off as today’s rejected reactionaries.

Thanks for the reality check. I couldn't agree more. The Bible tells these "Jesus-freaks" not to condone or be complicit with the world's "evil ways", altogether with its human religions, secular bigotry, and antichristian media and entertainment propaganda all saturated with and driven by the "spirit of antichrist" and satanic end-game motives. Rather than conforming themselves and defining personal success as we, the "ungodly" do, they are taught to be separate to all that is contrary to the holiness of God. To Heaven with them! Let our undercurrents led us to our destiny.

"He accuses Bauer of putting issue of national security before bedrock social issues like the sanctity of life and traditional marriage." Good Lord, Huckabee is craz ier than Bauer if that is possible.
This could be the perfect time for a third party to develop. You know, one with former Republicans who aren't afraid of their brain and using it.

No, Bauer is by far the greater wingnut. Huckabee is employing a little fundie-speak here. When he accuses Bauer of prioritizing "national security," what he really means is that Bauer backs the neo-cons because of Israel and the fundies' end-times fantasies

Huckabee, to the best of my knowledge, is not on record as promoting the neocon agenda for theological reasons. Bauer is.

As a side-note, there are plenty of people, mostly Catholics, in my neck of the woods (NH) who voted for Obama and also believe fervently in "the sanctity of life and traditional marriage." I might also add that our president-elect is on record as opposing same-sex marriage.

Do not mistake the Democratic victory for a widely progressive SOCIAL mandate. Economic, yes, but not social. Obama, unlike Bill-bo, will be wise enough to focus his progressive policies on the economy.

Huckabee is a religionut.

This shows some very good reasons why the Republicans lost and will continue to lose for a long time. They've become nothing but group of squabbling camps who can't even get their socks on all at the same time and get into a line up in the morning.
They are not "Conservative". They conserve nothing. They don't believe in democracy. They sell of everything and anything to the highest bidder. They aren't for free markets. They play the market like a casino and when they lose they come, hat in hand, back to the people for a hand out and act like they're entitled to it. They don't even understand the people of this country anymore. They completely misread the demographic and cultural landscape and they continue to do so. do they even know that many people who voted this last time around were 10 or 11 years old on 9/11?
They worked really, really hard to become nothing but a band of bitter old white men who can't agree on much of anything.
