Time magazine reports that in his new book, Do The Right Thing: Inside the Movement That's Bringing Common Sense Back to America, Mike Huckabee settles some old scores.

Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee is not the sort of politician who likes to bite his tongue. But that's just what he has found himself doing over eight months since he ended his surprising and colorful presidential campaign.

What does he think is wrong with the Republican Party? What does he think of his former primary rivals? What is the best direction for the conservative movement? To each question, he answered only in broad strokes, refusing to get too specific or pointed. He was writing a book, he would say. It will come out after the election. He will "name names." Just wait and see.

On Tuesday, that book will arrive on store shelves, and in terms of payback, it will not disappoint.

On Mitt Romney:

Huckabee writes that the former Massachusetts governor's record was "anything but conservative until he changed the light bulbs in his chandelier in time to run for president." He notes that Romney declined to make a phone call of congratulations after Huckabee beat the oddsmakers to win the Iowa caucuses, "which we took as a sign of total disrespect." He mocks Romney for suggesting, during one debate, more investment in high-yield stocks as a solution to economic woes. "Let them eat stocks!" Huckabee jokes.

Fred Thompson:

"Fred Thompson never did grasp the dynamics of the race or the country, and his amazingly lackluster campaign reflected just how disconnected he was with the people, despite the anticipation and expectation that greeted his candidacy," Huckabee writes.

Conservative Christian Leader Gary Bauer:

[Had] an "ever-changing reason to deny me his support." Of one private meeting with Bauer, Huckabee says, "it was like playing Whac-a-Mole at the arcade -- whatever issue I addressed, another one surfaced as a 'problem' that made my candidacy unacceptable." He accuses Bauer of putting issue of national security before bedrock social issues like the sanctity of life and traditional marriage.

John Hagee:

Huckabee speaks to Hagee by phone before the McCain endorsement, while the former Arkansas governor is preparing for a spot on Saturday Night Live. "I asked if he had prayed about this and believed this was what the Lord wanted him to do," Huckabee writes of his conversation with Hagee. "I didn't get a straight answer."
The Club For Growth:
"I don't take issue with what they believe, but the smugness with which they believe it," writes Huckabee, who raised some taxes as a governor and cut other deals with his state's Democratic legislature. "Faux-Cons aren't interested in spirited or thoughtful debate, because such an endeavor requires accountability for the logical conclusion of their argument."

UPDATE Mitt Romney has fired back:

Asked to respond, Romney spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom said Huckabee was acting small.

"This type of pettiness is beneath Mike Huckabee," Fehrnstrom. "If we're going to move the party forward, we need to offer more than personal recriminations. Unfortunately, in this book, Mike Huckabee is consumed with presumed slights, and he seems more interested in settling scores than in bringing people together."

As most any Republican what went wrong with the election and he/she will invariably say "we were not conservative enough."

I think Atilla the Hun would be too liberal for these guys.

The base and their reps are in full-blown denial. The historical trends and the demographics are against them, so all they can do is stick their head in the sand.

If they nominate Palin in 2012, she will promptly march them off the cliff and if the few responsible conservatives remaining in the GOP can't stop her, I say "good riddance." It would be sad to see the end of the Party of Lincoln, but the rump of the GOP bears hardly any resemblance to the vision of its the party's founders.

Honestly, I really hope that Huckabee continues to carry the banner of revolt against the neo-cons and phonies like Palin. Even if I disagree with him on a great many issues, he is still the most substantively engaged Republican on the economic, social, and environmental challenges we face. If the GOP wants a leader to really challenge Obama and the renewed Democratic party, he's the only one that can do it.

The "Party of Lincoln" was ended, at latest, with the implementation of the "Southern Strategy," which is effect nationalized the KKK as one of the two main parties.

Huckabee should be the front runner. He has economic, political and social positions we can understand due to his commuication skill and rely on due to his character, even when we disagree we know what we disagree with. He will not change them for political gain. This makes cogent, intelligent debate possible. This is why he will never be the front runner.

The best case scenario for the non evangelical parts of the republican campaign is for someone like Palin to do a redmeat tour, turn out all of the base and then lose the general. It's how Nixon came to power after losing the 1960 GE, he stepped back and let Barry Goldwater and his ilk have control of the party in a year that would have a very clear democratic slant, then once Goldwater and those of his philosophy were robbed of their clout within the party Nixon was able to take over and win the nomination and the general.

The only way for moderates, libertarians and fiscal conservatives within the party to point out that going more conservative is a losing strategy is to let those elements of the party have full reign for a full election cycle, with nothing to hold back the self destruction that'll ensue. Then people like Bobby Jindal, Eric Cantor, Charles Crist, and Olympia Snowe can take their party back. For the bible thumpers it's a four year strategy, for everyone else in the party it's a six year strategy(bringing up clout in 2014 and fielding a strong centrist candidate in 2016).

Just remember, Huckabee does not believe in evolution.
That said, he's spot on in his comments on Romney. I live in Massachusetts, and remember the few months that Mitt passed himself off as moderate, just long enough to become governor of Mass. NEVER ever trust any position that man says he holds.

These people are all too quick to LOUDLY proclaim their faith- and then disagree on which one is better at it.
WHAT THE FAITH?

Then they say they prayed for a sign and heard God's own voice in their ear: "YES! Do it for JESUS! It is MY WILL!"

And lo, they are smited at the Times of Election, and made to tumble from favor, as was Lucifer from heaven. And lo, they are then confused, as were the the builders of the Tower of Babel, and they say in their hearts, "First God tells me to run, and then He makes me lose. It COULDN'T be because of my character, or reputation, or qualifications for the office, or the way I ran my campaign... I COULDN'T BE WRONG OR SELF-DELUSIONAL ABOUT HEARING THE MESSAGE... It must be... God IS TESTING ME! That's it! (At least that's a good sound bite for the next interview..."

And STILL they learneth not the lesson from on high: "Cutteth the crap! I am Who am, the Same One Who, ages past, warneth thee NOT to bear false witness, to loveth each other as you loveth ME, and most of all,
LEAVETH ME O U T OF YOUR POLITICS! "

Woooooo... AMEN!! LOL It occured to me the other day (since this runs along the same line of thought) how the far-right would be standing out on any corner they could, screaming at the top of their lungs about how the fires in CA are "Gods punishment" IF prop 8 had passed.... but it didn't pass, so... what do they say now??? Interesting...

Although I vehemently disagree with his religious beliefs, I always thought Huckabee was decent...until the RNC. When he stood up there spouting his lies about the number of votes Palin had received and how they far surpassed the number Biden had received in his run for the Presidence, I knew he was no better than the rest of them. They lie, twist, deceive and misrepresent, and yet have the cojones to call themselves Christians? I have a feeling that, when their beloved Rapture occurs, they're going to be left behind like all the rest of us "sinners".

Thanks for the perspective. I think Huckabee is the least of the evils, too. I don't understand how 10 or 20 advisors from various camps can come up with different numbers, but of course they will always use the equations that favor the point they make. Perhaps this is not technically lying... I don't think. It is misleading at most, if you disagree with the method of calulation, but no politician ever reveals this. No doubt they all use whichever one is favorable at the time which is a flaw or loophole in the process. It is using what you can to prove your point within the boundaries of "fair play". Even congress use different accounting formulas to justify their votes. Look what it has gotten us! Their are even different formulas used in the various national polls causing variants in the results. I am not sure who "they" are in your comment but it seems politics is not for the faint of heart. For me "lies" are ubiquitous in both parties. (I'm independent, a former Democrat, and didn't watch either conventions so I probably shoudn't be commenting on this. I just appreciated your perspective. Thanks.

Seems as though the "middle" wants a separation of church and state.

Maybe this should let Huckabee and others know Religion is not the bedrock issue of poitices and the people are tired of it being pushed down our throat as THEIR answer to everything.

The Democrsts are lucky McCain didn't pick Huckabee.
He brings everything Palin brings to the "base", but is brighter and more articulate (not hard to be I grant you), is a Populist in a true sense and is appealing overall, despite his staunch stands on abortion and marriage.
His book proves his candor too. And he is a natural with the Media.
Having said that, he IS a politician and has some questionable actions in his resume. But nowhere near as many as McCain or Palin.
Also, it is hard to believe he would have tolerated the disgraceful campaign McCain and Palin did.
With Huckabee McCain could have won.

Lucky!? You're kidding right? This is weird repub snark right? "...Democrats are lucky McCain didn't pick Huckabee."!!!!!!!! Dear Republican, John McCain could have picked Anyone and he would have lost. You may wish to reflect on the FACT that the people of these U.S.A. have refuted and rejected the Rightwing Freak Show once and for all. Religious fanaticism has no place in our democratic process. The People do not agree with your hateful bigoted ideology. Americans do not love raining down rockets on innocent people, they do not love discriminating against people because of their religion, they do not love destroying the environment for some short term corporate profit, they do not love pissing on the Constitution. We have moved on while the (Christian)Right is left foaming at the mouth led by the worst our country has to offer: Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Michael Savage, Laura Ingrahm, Bill O'Reilly, Newt Gingrich, Tom Delay........The Republican party is finished and is now at this moment setting out on its long journey into political oblivioin.

We underestimate Huckabee at out peril, krocklin has a point. He has the folksiness and fundie aspects of Palin, but also has the gift of oratory, which McCain and certainly palin lack. But Huckabee's populist bent did not please the oligarchs, so he was torpedoed. Not to mention he was probably too independent and capable for McCain's tastes. Palin was suitably dumb, but not malleable enough, and got out of hand, which reflected badly on McCain and the GOP. The Republicans got thrashed this past time out so they may lend support to gov. Huckabbee in 2012. I hope not, he could win, especially if Obama is too bogged down with repairing the damage of the past 8 years to make what looks to the bulk of the electorate like progress.

Obama would have won - has the stuff of champions.. Huck has the fluff of pretenders.

BUT it is all a matter of turnout -- R's win (or stand good chance) if EV turnout for election is 55% or less. There are only 42% of 100% of us that really can lean toward his brand of old-time religion and populist politics. Granted a dud D and an attractive R can shift that slightly - but in any acceptable D against the Mike H brand of R is hands down winner at 65% EV turnout. Note: some of the 42% is getting thinner as a more educated and socially liberal young population comes into play.

Huckabee is a smooth operator under the guise of a loving Christian.

He is snake oil salesman. It's hard to believe that folks cannot see through his slickness. He may even border on the pathological. A real charmer......like sociopaths are.

Mike H is a typical Southern politician .. Bill C was also but with less bible thumping and more curiosity and intelligence. Also his agenda was broader.

They are sweet as sugar until you question their authority or beliefs (i.e., cross them). They will smile while stabbing you -- maybe you'll even feel guilty that you didn't present them an easier angle of attack.

Slick Willy - Slick Mike -- it's a southern thing.

Anyone who can possibly not think we have moved up the ladder with our new President-Elect is delusional. Anyone who thinks the priority of the GOVERNMENT is the sanctity of unborn fetuses and/or keeping gays from living as married couples in love over the security for our Nation should not vote because your brain is not working.

Mike H is VERY dangerous .. he is so slick.. and also can seem reasonable. But watch it.. a poisonous snake will never really be your loving friend - even a sweet talking one under the fruit tree if you get my drift.

We can never let our guard down with these people. Anything less than a 65% eligible voter turn out nationally gives these minority delusional elements in our Country a shot at high office.

The wonderful problem for the Republicans is the not so civil war between the ideological conservative intelligentsia, Brooks, Noonan, Parker, Will and others, and the snake handling Christian primitivists. Their marraige of convenience has passed its fecund stage and now seeks to find who really rules the roost. The crackpot coalition is tired with its crazy uncle status. It has carried water for decades and has been paid little more than lip service. The smart guys in the party are surprised to find they are still the minority they always were and have woken up in bed with one really hard to look at partner. One that is quite willing to take them to the bank for all the palimony they can get. All the smart guys did was point out the obvious, that Palin wasn't one of them and Jethro got his gun and went a huntin'. Just remember. Y'all got nothing to worry about cuz Jeesus is coming soon.

Well there it is. The primary GOP mission. It must rid itself of all Faux-Cons. The Dems can then do their bi-partisan two step with the individual that is left.
