Prince

Update 2:50 pm

According to Perez Hilton, Prince is now claiming that he was misquoted in the interview:

Apparently, the interviewer did not even use a recorder when she spoke with His Holy Purpleness, and that when she called his people to fact check, it turned out she had several factual inaccuracies, including a little bit about Prince recovering from hip surgery, which he never even had... What His Purpleness actually did was gesture to the Bible and said he follows what it teaches, referring mainly to the parts about loving everyone and refraining from judgment...

"We're very angry he was misquoted," says our Prince insider.

***PREVIOUSLY***

The New Yorker has an interview with Prince at his new Los Angeles home to talk about a new book, and during it talk turned to religion.

Seven years ago, he became a Jehovah's Witness. He said that he had moved to L.A. so that he could understand the hearts and minds of the music moguls. "I wanted to be around people, connected to people, for work," he said. "You know, it's all about religion. That's what unites people here. They all have the same religion, so I wanted to sit down with them, to understand the way they see things, how they read Scripture."

Prince had his change of faith, he said, after a two-year-long debate with a musician friend, Larry Graham. "I don't see it really as a conversion," he said. "More, you know, it's a realization. It's like Morpheus and Neo in 'The Matrix.' " He attends meetings at a local Kingdom Hall, and, like his fellow-witnesses, he leaves his gated community from time to time to knock on doors and proselytize. "Sometimes people act surprised, but mostly they're really cool about it," he said.

Recently, Prince hosted an executive who works for Philip Anschutz, the Christian businessman whose company owns the Staples Center. "We started talking red and blue," Prince said. "People with money--money like that--are not affected by the stock market, and they're not freaking out over anything. They're just watching. So here's how it is: you've got the Republicans, and basically they want to live according to this." He pointed to a Bible. "But there's the problem of interpretation, and you've got some churches, some people, basically doing things and saying it comes from here, but it doesn't. And then on the opposite end of the spectrum you've got blue, you've got the Democrats, and they're, like, 'You can do whatever you want.' Gay marriage, whatever. But neither of them is right."

When asked about his perspective on social issues--gay marriage, abortion--Prince tapped his Bible and said, "God came to earth and saw people sticking it wherever and doing it with whatever, and he just cleared it all out. He was, like, 'Enough.' "

OK, so here's the quote:

"God came to earth and saw people sticking it wherever and doing it with whatever, and he just cleared it all out. He was, like, 'Enough.' "

Seems, to me that it would be difficult to "misquote". I could understand "fabricate", but misquote?

No, no, they mean Prince misquoted God.

God didn't actually say "Enough", he said:

"To get off, thou shalt perform only the 23 positions of sexual righteousness, and a man shall not lie down in one-night stand with man as a man lies down in one-night stand with woman."

And on and on, with a whole lot of dietary and hair-care suggestions that certain "it's in the book!" types never bother to follow. I guess they still don't feel obligated to follow anything in the Old Testament that might make them look to Jewy.

Why do people think Prince was/is gay?

Probably, lyrics like this:

I'm in love with guys
It's the only way

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:37 PM on 11/18/2008

Actually, that lyric is:

I'm in love with God,
He's the only way

'Cause you and I know
we gotta die some day

Prince only became a Jehovah's Witness 7 years ago, but he's always been spiritual/religious (even in a song like "Let's Pretend We're Married")

well, just look at him

So Prince got to "stick it" anywhere he wanted but no one else gets to? He thinks policy in our country should be made according to a book that not every person believes in.

The Jehovah’s are a cult. They do not feel or sympathize with you or the world's problems or vote and they do not further their education. They do not join the military. It is part of their cult rules to go door-to-door to proselytize and hand you their literature. They also stand in public places to hand you their literature.

Also...
No Pledge of Allegiance
No Christmas celebration.
No Birthday acknowledgements.

And yet, in my limited experience w/ Witnesses, that they are the least judgmental religion around.
Besides, they're ALL cults.

Ding, ding. We have a winner!!! And now for your prize .... A bottle of Holy Water 2.0 to get out those tough stains and ... eternal salvation*

* Salvation may not be redeemed for eternity and is subject to change and possible substitution with damnation at the stores discretion.

yeah, you have had a very limited connection with the Witness Folks if you find them the "least judgemental"! Get out!!!! They are more cult-like than other religions because they encourage followers to be disconnected from the society in which they live to a greater extent than other religions.

I was at a concert where Prince singled out ladies in the front row and berated them for wearing "skimpy clothes" and not looking classy in long dresses like his back up singers.

Save your non-judgemental stuff.....

They are extremely judgemental. I had two friends who were booted from the church when they found out their divorced mother of two had a drinking problem. Instead of helping they showed them the door. The first time my friend celebrated her birthday was when she was 21. We bought her a cake and she cried. It's a terrible way to repress a person.

The only "holiday" they actually give credence to is the day that jesus died. Prince has always been a very spiritual person, but he always does what suits his purpose. If it's trendy or moral he finds satisfaction in that even though his music and stage gestures indicate something altogether different.

So calling something a "cult" makes it safe criticize?

But the other organizations that believe in imaginary and mystical things like the Christians (which Jehovah's witnesses are a part of) and the Muslims they are "religions" and are above reproach?

Plenty of Christians, Muslims, and Jews could care less about you or anyone else who isn't one of them and plenty also do not vote. There are also many Muslims that do not have a formal education, let alone further education. Many Christians homeschool, which is hardly an education at all.

Many Muslims do not join the military, and there are many Christians and Jews who don't join either- on moral grounds.

Also, it is a precept of Christianity to proselytize, you are supposed to convert people its in the rules.

Be careful what you call a cult.

It's a cult.

All religions are cult's, plain and simple.

cult - 1. a particular system of religious worship, esp. with reference to its rites and ceremonies.

Just b/c some mormons started this Prop 8 thing, why are all christians getting thrown into this basket of "i hate gay people" nonsense. I am christian. I attend catholic mass b/c God is what helps me get through MY pain. I'm tired of hearing all t his CHRISTIANS are crazy talk. I had many gay friends in college and gay friends who are christian. People are going to be mean and judgemental no matter what religion they belong to and no matter if they believe in God or not. If it were not for me believing in God, I would most likely be on the street or dead. leave people to worship who they please, and leave those who wish not to.

And for the record Prince was never gay. He actually wrote many songs that had to do with the Jesus but was not presented as a Christian song. (example read the lyrics to "I would die for you")

Some of those are bizarre comments from a JW. Granted that may be a redundant statement, but even for the bizarreness of JWs... he is quoted as saying "God came to earth and saw people sticking it wherever and doing it with whatever, and he just cleared it all out. He was, like, 'Enough.'" assumedly referring to Jesus but JWs don't subscribe to the mainstream "Christian" doctrine of the Trinity, so they don't believe Jesus is God. I guess maybe Perez was a little liberal with his "quotes". Maybe he meant "and I air quote..."

We're talking about PRINCE. When I want advice on funky guitar riffs, purple boas, hair gel, and all-girl bands, I'll be sure to ask him his thoughts, but WHY should anyone, fan or no fan, care about how he feels about gay marriage? HuffPost never ceases to feed America's lust for celebrity insight. I am disappointed in the New Yorker for this, however.

I'm a longtime Prince fan, but I support gay marriage, so I have mixed feelings about this. However, I'd like to point out three things:
1) At no point did he actively campaign for Prop 8, and as someone pointed out he probably didn't even vote.
2) His stance is no different from the President Elect's.
3) If you throw out your Prince albums because of this, you might as well throw out most of your reggae albums, too. Rastas aren't exactly the most tolerant people.

I saw an interview with "the artist that used to be known as prince" once and he was really mean to his band members.... I thought it was strange at the time. The prince of pop is also a Jehovah's Witness...need we say more. It must be hard for these sexually confused "artists" to also be Jehovah's Witness's. At least the prince of pop was born in it, but to convert to Jehovah's Witness must mean confusion beyond confusion. Put me on the list that will NEVER listen to him again....not hard to do I might say, due to the fact that his music is not good anymore.

Let's remind ourselves that Perez Hilton is NOT a journalist. Rather, he's a gossip diva with an non-creative pseudonym for a name.
