Prince

Update 2:50 pm

According to Perez Hilton, Prince is now claiming that he was misquoted in the interview:

Apparently, the interviewer did not even use a recorder when she spoke with His Holy Purpleness, and that when she called his people to fact check, it turned out she had several factual inaccuracies, including a little bit about Prince recovering from hip surgery, which he never even had... What His Purpleness actually did was gesture to the Bible and said he follows what it teaches, referring mainly to the parts about loving everyone and refraining from judgment...

"We're very angry he was misquoted," says our Prince insider.

***PREVIOUSLY***

The New Yorker has an interview with Prince at his new Los Angeles home to talk about a new book, and during it talk turned to religion.

Seven years ago, he became a Jehovah's Witness. He said that he had moved to L.A. so that he could understand the hearts and minds of the music moguls. "I wanted to be around people, connected to people, for work," he said. "You know, it's all about religion. That's what unites people here. They all have the same religion, so I wanted to sit down with them, to understand the way they see things, how they read Scripture."

Prince had his change of faith, he said, after a two-year-long debate with a musician friend, Larry Graham. "I don't see it really as a conversion," he said. "More, you know, it's a realization. It's like Morpheus and Neo in 'The Matrix.' " He attends meetings at a local Kingdom Hall, and, like his fellow-witnesses, he leaves his gated community from time to time to knock on doors and proselytize. "Sometimes people act surprised, but mostly they're really cool about it," he said.

Recently, Prince hosted an executive who works for Philip Anschutz, the Christian businessman whose company owns the Staples Center. "We started talking red and blue," Prince said. "People with money--money like that--are not affected by the stock market, and they're not freaking out over anything. They're just watching. So here's how it is: you've got the Republicans, and basically they want to live according to this." He pointed to a Bible. "But there's the problem of interpretation, and you've got some churches, some people, basically doing things and saying it comes from here, but it doesn't. And then on the opposite end of the spectrum you've got blue, you've got the Democrats, and they're, like, 'You can do whatever you want.' Gay marriage, whatever. But neither of them is right."

When asked about his perspective on social issues--gay marriage, abortion--Prince tapped his Bible and said, "God came to earth and saw people sticking it wherever and doing it with whatever, and he just cleared it all out. He was, like, 'Enough.' "

Religion, like war, is not the answer.

And what's the difference between the two?

Anyone who has paid attention to statements made by Prince in the past knows that the chance he was misquoted is slim. He is a Jehova's Witness, and before that he was still very religious although the denomination is unclear.

He just thought twice about losing those gay dollars, but it's probably too late. A smoldering anger in the gay community has flared up, and a scorched earth campaign is underway.

I imagine used CD stores are about to start filling up with hard to find Prince titles for you collectors out there.

Seriously, Prince has mental issues. We went to his last show in Vegas. Sold out, tickets were $675. each. We were told to get there @ 9:00pm because it was general admission. No seating, no food, no opening act, NO PRINCE. We left at 1:30 am, 4.5 hours of waiting, he never showed. We recouped our loss at the blackjack table while we waited. (We paid security to let us come and go, otherwise you waited in line.) Our dealer said that "the artist arrives when he feels the time is right-he's a real nut-job!"

I have been a Prince fan since 1978 and he has NEVER been gay. If you listen to a lot of his lyrics they are very profound. And if he was misquoted then they should retract. It isn't about taking advice from him, it is respecting his views.

I am a Christian and I see so many blogs talking about how religion is dividing the country ........ what people need to understand is .......... Christianity is NOT a religion, it is a relationship, a Choice.

But anywho, Prince is still that same as he was before but without the lewd girations and lyrics........

Calling Christianity a relationship and a choice does not make it not a religion--you choose to embrace the religious belief that it's a relationship.

And the fact that Christianity meddles in government means it's more that just a choice, folks are trying to make its strictures mandatory for everyone. And that's dividing the nation.

Christianity originally was not intended to be a religion. Christ was against the religious establishment of his time for exactly the same reasons that modern Christianity is criticized. They nailed Him to a tree for his opposition. I believe what I have seen of the Christian right they could easily be capable of the same thing!

Prince should stick with the music thing, his social views are scaring the hell out of me, so much talent and such moronic views don't seem to match...!!! Any person who takes religion to another extreme is not welcome on my MP3's player, huh...

did you read the part about the Mis-Quote. To all the Jesus Nuts out there Jesus was asked a question about which of the Commandments he thought was the most important. Jesus said: Love thy God, and Love thy Brother.......... Period

Who cares what this prince critter says or believes?

Religion has caused more wars than most of us can count. Religion/Christianity/etc., is the biggest fraud ever pulled on the human race.

So this is how people are destroyed. This is what we've come to. It's like John Birch Society in reverse or something. Someone has "alledgedly" given an opinion that counters the counter-culture; someone who has contributed to said culture to the point of adding a whole new layer/page to music that is still very much relevant, and yet, because it's easier to believe the worse of him instead of even questioning if the interviewer DID take out of context his words.

This witch hunting is getting scary, and oh so ironic.

You're probaly right. But in this case there really are "witches" out there, meaning people who would deny rights to gay people.

Prince is notorious for not allowing reporters to use tape recorders when interviewing him.

That being said, if he's misquoted, he shouldn't whine about it.

Wow... there are many people who takes a verse from the Bible and interpret it to fit what ever picture they have on social issues. I just don't understand why people that believe in the Bible never read the whole story and ask God what the message is. And I don't think people understand how our Four Fathers wrote the Constitution so that religion would not influence it because they knew it would divide the nation if on religious view is placed upon all people. I believe a true relationship with God will answer and open people's mind to what the 10 commandments really says to all of us...

What's this gay marriage I keep hearing about, why does everything gay, have to have the word gay appended to it.

Right. We're to believe the reporter made up the bulk of her interview with Prince and he's upset about this. Sounds more like he was flapping at the gums and regretted saying a few things. Personally, I never realized Prince was so narrow-minded. But the numerous times he's reinvented himself point to the fact that he doesn't really know who his is or what he believes in, so he's willing to fall for anything.

Yep, His Purpleness is an odd bird alright. The day I look to Prince for spiritual or social guidance on matters of conscience and morality will be the day I wake up and decide to sprinkle heroin on my corn flakes.

Experts agree, Prince rocks. His social opinions are irrelevant.
