Prince

Update 2:50 pm

According to Perez Hilton, Prince is now claiming that he was misquoted in the interview:

Apparently, the interviewer did not even use a recorder when she spoke with His Holy Purpleness, and that when she called his people to fact check, it turned out she had several factual inaccuracies, including a little bit about Prince recovering from hip surgery, which he never even had... What His Purpleness actually did was gesture to the Bible and said he follows what it teaches, referring mainly to the parts about loving everyone and refraining from judgment...

"We're very angry he was misquoted," says our Prince insider.

***PREVIOUSLY***

The New Yorker has an interview with Prince at his new Los Angeles home to talk about a new book, and during it talk turned to religion.

Seven years ago, he became a Jehovah's Witness. He said that he had moved to L.A. so that he could understand the hearts and minds of the music moguls. "I wanted to be around people, connected to people, for work," he said. "You know, it's all about religion. That's what unites people here. They all have the same religion, so I wanted to sit down with them, to understand the way they see things, how they read Scripture."

Prince had his change of faith, he said, after a two-year-long debate with a musician friend, Larry Graham. "I don't see it really as a conversion," he said. "More, you know, it's a realization. It's like Morpheus and Neo in 'The Matrix.' " He attends meetings at a local Kingdom Hall, and, like his fellow-witnesses, he leaves his gated community from time to time to knock on doors and proselytize. "Sometimes people act surprised, but mostly they're really cool about it," he said.

Recently, Prince hosted an executive who works for Philip Anschutz, the Christian businessman whose company owns the Staples Center. "We started talking red and blue," Prince said. "People with money--money like that--are not affected by the stock market, and they're not freaking out over anything. They're just watching. So here's how it is: you've got the Republicans, and basically they want to live according to this." He pointed to a Bible. "But there's the problem of interpretation, and you've got some churches, some people, basically doing things and saying it comes from here, but it doesn't. And then on the opposite end of the spectrum you've got blue, you've got the Democrats, and they're, like, 'You can do whatever you want.' Gay marriage, whatever. But neither of them is right."

When asked about his perspective on social issues--gay marriage, abortion--Prince tapped his Bible and said, "God came to earth and saw people sticking it wherever and doing it with whatever, and he just cleared it all out. He was, like, 'Enough.' "

My Sisters best friend bleed to death in the hospital because they would not accept a needed blood transfusion. Let people Die to support a Lie....

If someone refuses your help and assistance then you did not let them Die, they made a willful choice that ended in their own death.

Live life by Choice and not by Force.

why all of the fuss about prince..??? i continue to find prince very important as a musican and his views first of all were taken in the context of an erronenous interview because the interviewer MISQUOTED him on many levels....

however, my main focus comes into play when i read the comments of people who JUST REFUSE TO UNDERSTAND: people choose to interpet religion AS SUCH, and ALL RELIGIONS are based upon SUBJECTIVE intepretation. if you step back far enough from RELIGION, there can only be ONE TRUE RELIGION and that would be a religion based upon PERSONAL PRINCIPLES THAT APPLY TO EACH INDIVIDUAL AS SUCH. i have no problems with 'traditional' religious views AND the so-called 'secular' religious views because if these 'different' viewpoints brings an individual into personal HARMONY then who are we to CONDEMN...?? TRUE RELIGION should bring people into PERSONAL HARMONY with themselves and not all of this 'god-will-damn-the-group-to-be-named-later-at-the-next-hate-fund-raiser-meeting'.......

STOP PRESSING RELIGION UPON HUMANITY - and just start living as a true HUMAN BEING for yourself.

Hang on now -- if Prince is now a 'devout JW' then I'm the Pope! How come Prince
gets to still wear make-up and it's obvious he is still gay or bi or whatever. And he
sure doesn't DRESS like any JW's I've known or have been around. I should know,
I have family members who are JW. As for Michael Jackson -- please, same with
him -- he used to wear those 'military' jackets and JW's don't believe in any of that
(going to war, etc.) so that was always puzzling. Michael Jackson is just one VERY
misguided man, I feel sorry for him. I don't know enough about Prince; but he sure
doesn't represent the JW's very well in my opinion.

The prince formerly known as an artist has finally lost his marbles.

Those comments in the New Yorker don't sound like anything Prince would say. We're talking about Prince, the guy who used to go shirtless and wear women's pantyhose, a speedo and a belt with high heeled shoes on stage. Yes, I remember Prince from before Purple Rain.

BTW, if you're reading this, Prince, PLEASE come knock on my door!

No...it's NOT that Prince...it's the one who's soul and creativity has been sucked out of him via Jehovah's Witnesses.

So, in your opinion, no one can change. No one can have a religious conversion? People can't rehabilitate? Stage antics = real life?

Decent musician but relied on appearing super feminine for shock value and to gain fame.

After reading this interview, I can see that prince is not very bright at all. The guy is very dull!

He has been washed up for almost a decade and is now just another religious shill.

Something was always wrong with Prince ...he's now just proving it totally.

Here's what I say to Prince, or the artist formerly known as prince, I'm done with you. I refuse to listen, purchase, or attend any concert or event that contributes one dollar to your coffers! Good luck Mr. whatever you want to call yourself, You've received the last dime of my money.

I've never wondered "What would the artist formerly known as Prince then known as a string of oddball symbols and now back to Prince again think of X?" And if he shows up at my door he'll get the same reception any religious sales flack gets: "No thank you."

He still says he's against gay marriage and his quote at the end doesn't seem to be taken out of context. Prince sucks anyway, I don't see why the gay community loves him so much. I'm one member of the gay community who has never liked him and has always seen him as a loser from Minnesota who can overproduce his music in a studio and never deliver live.

Not only did Prince lose his thinking ability with his conversion, but also his creativity, both musically and lyrically.

Prince is now a Jehovah Witness and this has changed his viewpoint on many things. Being from Chicago and in the blues community, I know first had that he has changed regarding religion, and this is guiding his beliefs now. Just like everything in life, you can change your positions. What he was like when he was in his 20-30's is not how he is now. He is a very active member of the JW faith.

Exactly. If he's going to change his lyrics because he believes they don't fit with his religion, then he's going to change other things as well.

And in case there's any doubt what a devout Jehovah Witness believes in regards to same sex marriage, just check out: http://www.watchtower.org/e/20050408a/article_01.htm

True...but the artistry of Prince is GONE. His JW music sucks which has led him to invoke ploys to make the charts. (In Musicology he gave albums out with ticket sales, at O2, he added his album in a UK Sunday paper...which didn't work for the latter) People don't buy his music anymore...which caused him to pout like a baby and shut down all his websites and send cease-and-desist letters to any sites with his name on it. I'm surprised he hasn't commissioned lightening bolts to strike down these convo's on HuffPo. :) Bless his lil purple heart...
