Prince

Update 2:50 pm

According to Perez Hilton, Prince is now claiming that he was misquoted in the interview:

Apparently, the interviewer did not even use a recorder when she spoke with His Holy Purpleness, and that when she called his people to fact check, it turned out she had several factual inaccuracies, including a little bit about Prince recovering from hip surgery, which he never even had... What His Purpleness actually did was gesture to the Bible and said he follows what it teaches, referring mainly to the parts about loving everyone and refraining from judgment...

"We're very angry he was misquoted," says our Prince insider.

***PREVIOUSLY***

The New Yorker has an interview with Prince at his new Los Angeles home to talk about a new book, and during it talk turned to religion.

Seven years ago, he became a Jehovah's Witness. He said that he had moved to L.A. so that he could understand the hearts and minds of the music moguls. "I wanted to be around people, connected to people, for work," he said. "You know, it's all about religion. That's what unites people here. They all have the same religion, so I wanted to sit down with them, to understand the way they see things, how they read Scripture."

Prince had his change of faith, he said, after a two-year-long debate with a musician friend, Larry Graham. "I don't see it really as a conversion," he said. "More, you know, it's a realization. It's like Morpheus and Neo in 'The Matrix.' " He attends meetings at a local Kingdom Hall, and, like his fellow-witnesses, he leaves his gated community from time to time to knock on doors and proselytize. "Sometimes people act surprised, but mostly they're really cool about it," he said.

Recently, Prince hosted an executive who works for Philip Anschutz, the Christian businessman whose company owns the Staples Center. "We started talking red and blue," Prince said. "People with money--money like that--are not affected by the stock market, and they're not freaking out over anything. They're just watching. So here's how it is: you've got the Republicans, and basically they want to live according to this." He pointed to a Bible. "But there's the problem of interpretation, and you've got some churches, some people, basically doing things and saying it comes from here, but it doesn't. And then on the opposite end of the spectrum you've got blue, you've got the Democrats, and they're, like, 'You can do whatever you want.' Gay marriage, whatever. But neither of them is right."

When asked about his perspective on social issues--gay marriage, abortion--Prince tapped his Bible and said, "God came to earth and saw people sticking it wherever and doing it with whatever, and he just cleared it all out. He was, like, 'Enough.' "

Whose scriptures? You must really love that one about women being unclean. Read your scriptures, but leave my civil rights alone. Freedom from religion is a part of freedom of religion.

Well if Perez says so, it must be true. Like when he reported Fidel Castro had passed. Prince has been making crappy music for a while now, so I'm not likely to give him any of my money anyway.

It is funny how their invisible man in the sky could wipe out Sodom and Gammora, but the Atrocities going on in the Eastern Congo right now do not even rise to level of curious interest in the invisible man in the sky's eye.

The God they speak of is not as powerful as they wish him to be.

Fiddlesticks.
Everybody knows that Gammora was really destroyed in a cataclysmic battle with Godzilla.

If everyone was gay, there would be no offspring, and the human race would in, within 200 years. How natural is that?

Extinction is natural and happens to species all the time. Humans are not exempt or special. The universe is a lot older than us and probably will go on long after humans are no longer found.

Self-preservation is one of -- if not THE -- most dominate hard-wired driving forces of the natural world. Thus, people will find, logically or not, reasons to maximize the survival of their species. In that vein, it's somewhat understandable that people (like the original commenter above) would be motivated by fear of societal or biological demise. Regardless, it's an unfounded fear. Like you said below, just because one is homosexual doesn't mean they physically can't reproduce (i.e. surrogate birth). Also, the homosexuals are such a small percent of the total population that it shouldn't even register on a list of logic-based areas to address when considering the preservation of our species.

Additionally, being gay doesn't mean we can't reproduce.

Wow! Fun factoid there. Funny how you could say the same thing about couples who choose to have a vasectomy or tubes tied so they won't have children. If everyone were sterile, the human race would end! Goodness gracious, we better make sure sterile people don't marry. We wouldn't want to encourage others to follow their lifestyle!

Look, stop pretending that preventing gays from marrying is some logical, scientific or even a sociologic reason-based decision because it's not. The only "reason" to "justify" preventing gays from marrying is b*igotry, fear, and religious-based discrimination.

Hmmm, I always thought Prince was Gay but I guess that was stereotyping on my part because he is rather effeminate. So my bad for connotating that being effeminate is the same as being Gay.

His interpretation of the bible suits his homophobic ways.

And yes, being against gays and therefore gay marriage is homophobic.

Prince said that? Hey, I also just heard from John Cafferty, Rick Astley, Adam Ant and Tommy Tutone, too. They said that Prince escaped from the "Home for Eighties Has Beens" and the men with the nets have been looking for him.

I grew up a conservative Christian, and have since left that nonsense. Seeing Bill Maher's Religulous kind of puts this all in perspective.

It bugs me that people only want that part of you they find useful for their own hedonistic pursuits. For years homosexuals struggled in the closet, and now find liberation in being open, now these same people want others to keep God in the closet... If I have to witness anyone's homosexuality, please believe you will hear of my God!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:52 PM on 11/17/2008

You don't have to witness anything.

I don't have sex on your front lawn, so keep your religion to yourself.

Well said Fred. I don't get how these people use god as an excuse to judge and pull back civil liberties and then act as if THEY are being persecuted. To: kwoodberryesq - Your god is EVERYWHERE...he's on my money, in my schools, in my courts, in my politics, in my doctor's office...EVERYWHERE!! So please spare us your righteous judgement....relax (seriously) and be happy that you are part of the richest and most powerful religion on Earth.

Speaking as a pro-gay-rights heterosexual I would request that you keep God out of my Government and limit Him/Her in my public discourse. If you go from that to the closet, that's your problem, not ours.
