ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Sen. Ted Stevens, the longest serving Republican in Senate history, narrowly lost his re-election bid Tuesday, marking the downfall of a Washington political power and Alaska icon who couldn't survive a conviction on federal corruption charges. His defeat by Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich moves Senate Democrats within two seats of a filibuster-proof 60-vote majority.

Stevens' ouster on his 85th birthday marks an abrupt realignment in Alaska politics and will alter the power structure in the Senate, where he has served since the days of the Johnson administration while holding seats on some of the most influential committees in Congress.

The crotchety octogenarian built like a birch sapling likes to encourage comparisons with the Incredible Hulk, but he occupies an outsized place in Alaska history. His involvement in politics dates to the days before Alaska statehood, and he is esteemed for his ability to secure billions of dollars in federal aid for transportation and military projects. The Anchorage airport bears his name; in Alaska, it's simply "Uncle Ted."

Tuesday's tally of just over 24,000 absentee and other ballots gave Begich 150,728, or 47.76 percent, to 147,004, or 46.58 percent, for Stevens. There are about 2,500 overseas ballots yet to be counted.

A recount is possible. If the vote differential between the two candidates is more than 0.5 percent, either side can seek a recount if it posts a bond of about $15,000 to pay for a new tally.

Begich said the defining issue in the race was the desire for a new direction in Washington, not Stevens' legal problems.

Alaska voters "wanted to see change," he told reporters in Anchorage. "Alaska has been in the midst of a generational shift _ you could see it."

Stevens' campaign didn't immediately respond to phone calls seeking comment.

Stevens' loss was another slap for Republicans in a year that has seen the party lose control of the White House, as well as seats in the House and Senate. It also moves Democrats one step closer to the 60 votes needed to overcome filibusters in the Senate and gives President-elect Barack Obama a stronger hand when he assumes office on Jan. 20.

Democrats now hold 58 seats, when two independents who align with Democrats are included, with undecided races in Minnesota and Georgia where two Republicans are trying to hang onto their seats.

Democrats have now picked up seven Senate seats in the Nov. 4 election.

"With seven seats and counting now added to the Democratic ranks in the Senate, we have an even stronger majority that will bring real change to America," Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, said in a statement.

The climactic count came after a series of tumultuous days for a senator who has been straddling challenges to his power both at home and in his trial in Washington. Notwithstanding all that turmoil, Stevens revealed Tuesday that he will not ask President George W. Bush to give him a pardon for his seven felony convictions.

Stevens' future was murky at a time when newly elected members of both the House and Senate were on Capitol Hill for heady receptions, picture-taking sessions and orientation this week. Stevens, speaking earlier Tuesday in Washington, said he had no idea what his life would be like in January, when the 111th Congress convenes.

"I wouldn't wish what I'm going through on anyone, my worst enemy," he lamented to reporters. "I haven't had a night's sleep for almost four months."

Last month just days before the election, Stevens was convicted by a federal jury in Washington of lying on Senate disclosure forms to conceal more than $250,000 in gifts and home renovations from an oil field services company.

His defeat could also allow Republican senators to sidestep the task of determining whether to kick out the longest serving member of their party in the Senate.

When counting resumed Tuesday, 1,022 votes divided the candidates out of about 300,000 ballots cast. Most of the those votes came from areas that had favored Begich _ the Anchorage vicinity and the southeastern panhandle around Juneau.

It is a testament to Stevens' popularity _ he was once named "Alaskan of the Century" _ that he won nearly half the votes, even after his conviction. He routinely brought home the highest number of government dollars per capita in the nation _ more than $9 billion in 2006 alone, according to one estimate.

With Stevens gone "it's a big gap in dollars _ billions of dollars _ that none of the other members of the delegation, Begich, whoever, could fill," said Gerald McBeath, chair of the political science department at University of Alaska Fairbanks. "There is no immediate replacement for him."

Following the trial Stevens said he wanted another term "because I love this land and its people" and vowed to press on with an appeal. Professing his innocence, he blamed his legal problems on his former friend Bill Allen, the founder and former chairman of VECO Corp., the government's star witness.

In a state where oil and politics have always mixed, the conviction came as part of a long-running investigation into government corruption centered around VECO.

Begich will be the first Democrat to represent Alaska in the Senate in nearly 30 years. He is the son of Nick Begich, Alaska's third congressman, who died in a plane crash 1972 while running for re-election.

Stevens' lawyer demanded a speedy trial, hoping for exoneration in time to fight the first serious threat to his seat in decades. But the trial in Washington not only left Stevens a felon, it deprived him of time to campaign in his home state.

Stevens refused pleas from his own party leaders to step down after the verdict, including Sen. John McCain, the GOP presidential nominee who said the Alaska senator had "broken his trust with the people."

Stevens' fall came shortly after another Alaskan, Gov. Sarah Palin, emerged as a national figure on the Republican presidential ticket. She had called for Stevens to step aside at one point, but appeared to back away from that the day after the election when returns showed Stevens with an edge.

"The people of Alaska just spoke," she said.

Ted Stevens is a perfect example of why we need term limits. The Founders never intended for our representatives to spend their entire careers in Congress.

Yup.

Now we just need Franken to beat Coleman in the Minnesota recount and Martin to beat Chambliss in the Georgia runoff and that'll be 60 Senate seats for for the Dems.

Even with "only" 58 seats which the Dems already have or 59 seats though, I'm sure the Dems will be able to get 1 or 2 moderate Repugs to vote with them on key legislation.

Conservatism is dead. Now we just gotta bury it.

When I was thirty, I lived in Washington DC. Senator Stevens was a good friend with a friend of a friend of mine. I went to a splashy party with famous political folks and ate at the same table with Senator Stevens, along with two other of my friends. Even though I do not condone what he did, I think we must remember that Senator Stevens is a human being, with flesh, blood, heart and feelings. While we do not have to like what he did or approve of his way of doing business, keep in mind that he is a very old man, his dreams are broken, his heart is shattered and he needs prayers because he is a human being. There is no need to gleefully dance around the bonfire of this witch hunt. Senator Stevens got caught doing business as usual. I would like to see the results of similar probes conducted on other long-time politicians in every state. I'll bet we would all be appalled at the way that Washington has done business. It would probably unearth a lot of similar behaviors as Senator Stevens'.

That is fine for the folks in Alaska who may attend the same church as Stevens and want to remember that he is a human being with feelings. The people he represented as a Senator wanted him to just do his job.

Sounds like another one of those - Everyone does it so it is okay.
"Everyone thought there were WMD's in Iraq so it was okay for Bu$h to tell tales to get us into War."
I dream about a new dryer, but I am pretty sure I am going to have to pay for it.
It's "business as usual" for republicans, not everyone. Are we to believe that when a republican gets caught, tried, and put away his heart is shattered? Until then, he is A-okay?

I never said that what he did was acceptable. What I suggested is compassion. Perhaps that is too difficult for the bloodthirsty vampires out there. He is an old man, far past his prime, merely flesh and blood. He is not a demon. I feel for him as a human being in pain, even although I do think he is wrong and has created this situation himself. This shame and humiliation is punishment enough, there is no reason to wish him further ill. It is not like he murdered someone. Compassion, people. What would you want in his position? The rules of behavior have changed since he first started in the senate. He is a relic, caught in the trap of the old days and the old ways. Like I said, I met him. He is a decent man. He doesn't need this hateful energy directed at him. He needs prayers because he is a human being.

Yeah, and now he can take his corrupted, self serving, very old flesh and blood back to the den he made himself. Well, almost by himself.

This old man as well as Jefferson in La. represents what we need to clean out in Washington and send home. IF we don't convince the type o f crooks that we WILL both prosecute them and send them home, we can't ever hope to take our country and our government back.

What baffles me is that the election was this close. Are the voters in Alaska aware that Stevens was convicted of a felony and could be facing jail time (although at his tender age of 85, I doubt it)? I mean how was this so close? I know that he's the long time incumbent, but were voters looking at their ballots and thinking "wow, I guess I'd rather vote for a convicted elderly crook than a democrat"? Maybe the AIP folks are onto something...

I don't think it has anything to do with his corruption. Everyone in the state knows that about him. It's simply the fact that he brought home the bacon for AK for decades. That's what it's about.
Of course AK is severely conservative, but that's just another story. I'm not defending it...just explaining.

Which brings to mind, if Stevens would have RESIGNED when he was convicted, he probably wouldn't have done any jail time, but now since he held in there thinking that his fellow Alaskan's would vote him into another term, well, now he doesn't have that option and could very well do some time. Doubt it because of his age and I would suspect the next time he is in court room he will opt for a wheel chair or fain some sort of "serious" illness because of his age. Betcha.

I think when it is all over and done we will find that the election process was a little crooked. Many are saying that the votes for the presidental election were off because the total percentage matched exactly to the 2004 election. Also, the poll predictions were way off from what was estimated---all other estimations were only a point or two off from what were predicted and these numbers are usually very close to accurate. Something fishy in Alaska.

It seems hard to believe that a convicted felon would be a good choice to represent the people of Alaska. The fact that the race is even as close as it is, is amazing! I don't know why these people keep working until they are mid 80s. Its time to go home and retire anyway. Unfortunately, Stevens retirement will most likely be behind bars. Power corrupts.

Though the DEMS have had monetary control of the government for two years noe, the Repub minority prevented them from 'stepping off the cliff'. That check and balance maybe gone. How will they BLAME Pres Bush for any of this financial fiasco when they fully control the purse strings? Unless they can turn this mess around fast, DEMS are doomed in 2010 and probably, 2012. BRAVO! The political cycle renews itself unerringly.......

The GOP now faces the prospect of the media turning on them for a change and working-class Americans, after getting a better deal from a FREE press, will learn that the GOP is made up exclusively of corporate barons and pedophiles and those who *work* for a living and vote Republican is like a chicken voting for Col. Sanders.

The Reagan era lies are spent and the GOP is exposed, FOX, Limbaugh hate propaganda no longer works. The GOP better find a new form of mass deception they will *never* regain national power, regardless of how bad Dems screw up.

Possibly but don't bet on it. After FDR was first elected and even though his attempts to get out of the Depression hadn't yet shown much progress, the Dems actually won more seats in Congress in the next election.

The point being that most of the American people recognize the fact that it took the better part of a decade to screw up the economy so fixing it won't be instantaneous. As long as Obama is straight with the public and clearly explains what he is doing and why (which he is exceptionally good at doing), I think the public will give him and the Dems some slack.

The cycle is this:

- Childish Republicans win full control of Congress and White House by telling people what they want to hear, then redistribute massive wealth to the already wealthiest using means that ultimately leave the economy in a depression or recession.

- Grown ups then get elected to clean up the mess.

- Enough people eventually get tired of competency and dealing with the clean-up that they start leaning toward bringing the brats back into office again, and the cycle continues...

What's pathetic is:

Democrats on the Hill claim they can't pass any "pro-people" legislation though every "pro-corporate" bill will be rubber-stamped, as usual, and Reid and Pelosi always use the "Well, we don't have a 'Filibuster-Proof' majority!" excuse.

A> Republicans passed EVERY F**KING piece of Legislation they wanted, EVERY ONE, until 2006 and the GOP didn't have NEAR the majority the Dems have now (51?).

B> Frist had his finger on the "Nuclear Option" trigger (remember THAT???) on the RARE occasions Democrats filibustered banker slavery legislation but Reid NEVER EVEN MENTIONS THE NUCLEAR OPTION and the **Repugs filibuster EVERY bill they don't like**.

I'm **convinced** Reid and Pelosi WORK FOR THE GOP and they're just giving Dem voters a mind-f***.
