Hungry Child

News Net:

New government figures show that almost 700,000 children went hungry in the United States at some point in 2007, up more than 50 percent from the year before to mark the highest point since 1998. And that's even before this year's sharp economic downtown, the Agriculture Department reported Monday.

The department's annual report on food security showed that during 2007 the number of children who suffered a substantial disruption in the amount of food they typically eat was more than double the 430,000 in 2006 and the largest figure since 716,000 in 1998.

Sorry. The GOP still loves you. They just don't want to think about you or work on your behalf or talk about you unless you are preterm. Run along, now.

The "Christian" response? As exampled by the Mormons: use the church wealth not for helping the poor and hungry, but rather to bolster support for Prop 8 in California.

Mormons philanthropy is almost unmatched. The issues of homosexuality and hunger are unrelated.

Mormons are just jealous, because the men can't take multiple wives anymore.

I teach high school. Yesterday, I discussed the concept of overpopulation with my students. They invoked images of starving children as representative of nations that are overpopulated. hmmm. Today, I will confront them with this news. hmmm. I know some of my students and their peers are hungry today.

Well, I'm a secular humanist, and as such I believe in the central importance of the value of human happiness here and now. It's why I'm a progressive, and devote time and energy and money to seeing that all people are fed, clothed, housed, and receive medical care.

we hate children in this country... that's why this is happening, that's why we are one of the worst performing countries in math and science, we have become a nation of child neglect...

Have children starving in the USA - how awful? Is there anything we Americans can be proud of
in this day and time. We seem to be the worst of the worst, we have no plans, no organization.
But people are against abortion - they rather starve them. Makes sense to me!

The report is not about starving it's about hunger. Different things. Here's a sample of the questions asked:

- Did you worry about food running out before your money?
- Can you afford to eat balanced meals?
- Did you rely on low cost foods to feed your family?

One can have "some" food and still die of malnutrition. That is what those questions are about.

What will the NEW GOP platform be that will help these children?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:45 AM on 11/18/2008

The GOP has no platform or ideas, except wining about spending and core values while Rome burns around them, this is why they lost and this why they will lose in the future. To bad it took a hugely expensive preemptive war for profit, the ideological, inept Bush Administration and the collapse of the economy to bring it all to light.

Yeah, somehow those "luxury trips" the AIG big kahunas took AFTER the government bailed them out seems even MORE obscene in the light of this.

Sometimes things are out of our control. I had a back injury a few years ago that made it impossible for me to work. I have discovered the joys of oatmeal as a way to insure my child has enough to eat. I mean the real stuff that you have to cook for 15 min. It is breakfast and snack. It makes great muffins that can be lunch if need be. Adding fruit, fresh or dried jazzes it up. We also use a lot of chickpeas. Homemade hummis is a great sandwich filler. It's not the greatest diet in the world, but my child is fed.

exactly... the folks the most responsible for this very embarrassing statistic for supposedly the richest country in the world, are the least likely to care while they live in their eight houses and drive their thirteen cars and shower from gold plated fixtures, and give contracts to companies like Bechtel and Halliburton to throw wealth at their friends and steal from the poor. this administration cannot go away soon enough
