I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Oscar-winner Emma Thompson showed off her lighter side when she appeared on Letterman Monday night. Following a guest who was in real life attacked by a fox, Emma played her as she entered, wrestling a fox to the ground. She is next up in "Last Chance Harvey" alongside Dustin Hoffman.

Forget Thompson. Who's the cutie at the start of the clip?

If she had just stepped out into view with the fox hanging off her arm, briefly wrenched it free and flung it back off stage, then continued walking out, perhaps straightening her clothes and hair as she walked the rest of the way, finally sitting down and acting as if nothing had happened, it might have been a witty, amusing bit - sort of like the first time Bruce Willis showed up with a single lock of hair visibly attached to his bald head with a piece of Scotch Tape. But as it was done, Ms. Thompson's performance was much like her performances in the Harry Potter films - over the top and campy in the worst possible way. She can do comedy - her performance as herself on the sitcom Ellen was one of the handful of non-preachy, genuinely entertaining "post coming out" episodes of that show. A lot of very talented actors who are best known for their dramatic performances tend to need a stong director to reign them in when they attempt comedy. I guess Emma Thompson is one of them.

"The greatest Letterman entrance ever"?
Hardly.
I didn't laugh and you can hardly hear anyone laugh in the audio of the video.
If you want to know the best Letterman "entrance", it was Larry "Bud" Melman's entrance as "The Beatles" on the 30th anniversary of the Beatles first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show (Letterman tapes at the Ed Sullivan Theatre, the very place where Ed held his shows). Leading up to the day, rumors were flying that the three surviving Beatles were going to make a surprise appearance on Letterman's show. So, at one point in the show, Letterman got all serious and mentioned the auspicious date and then announced to hushed tones in the live audience that he had special guests. And then he announced: "Ladies and Gentlemen, the Beatles!"
And then Larry "Bud" Melman came on. The caption underneath him as he stood front and center on stage read "The Beatles" as he sang "I want to hold your hand".

Emma is great, but this was boring and not funny.

Emma Thompson is brilliant, witty and compassionate. A model example of a celebrity whose commitment to serious causes is not part of her self-promotional mix - and who doesn't sit on the fence when the time comes to speak out. A class act if ever there was one.

Wow. I really was expecting more. It was amusing but the greatest entrance ever? A bit of an overstatement.
