WASHINGTON — Sen. Joe Lieberman will keep his chairmanship of the Senate Homeland Security Committee despite hard feelings over his support for GOP nominee John McCain during the presidential campaign.

The Connecticut independent will lose a panel post on the Environment and Public Works panel as punishment for criticizing Obama this fall.

Lieberman's colleagues in the Democratic caucus voted 42-13 Tuesday to approve a resolution condemning statements made by Lieberman during the campaign but allowing him to keep the Homeland Security Committee gavel.

Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said he had been very angry by Lieberman's actions but that "we're looking forward, we're not looking back."

Added Reid: "This was not a time for retribution, it was a time for moving forward on the problems of this country."

Lieberman's grasp on his chairmanship had gotten stronger since President-elect Barack Obama signaled to Democratic leaders that he's not interested in punishing Lieberman for boosting McCain and criticizing Obama during the long campaign.

"This is the beginning of a new chapter, and I know that my colleagues in the Senate Democratic Caucus were moved not only by the kind words that Senator Reid said about my longtime record, but by the appeal from President-elect Obama himself that the nation now unite to confront our very serious problems," Lieberman said after the vote.

Anger toward Lieberman seems to have softened since Election Day, and Democrats didn't want to drive him from the Democratic caucus by taking away his chairmanship and send the wrong signals as Obama takes office on a pledge to unite the country. Lieberman had indicated it would be unacceptable for him to lose his chairmanship.

Story continues below

Lieberman, who was Democratic presidential nominee Al Gore's running mate in 2000, was re-elected in 2006 as an independent after losing his state's Democratic primary to Greenwich businessman Ned Lamont amid intense anti-war sentiment. Lieberman is a strong supporter of the war.

He remains a registered Democrat and aligns with the party inside the Senate, where he supports the party position on most issues other the war.

But Lieberman angered colleagues in signing onto McCain's campaign, touring the country on McCain's campaign plane and speaking on his behalf at the GOP convention in September. Democrats were particularly upset that he had attacked Obama rather than simply saying positive things about McCain.

"There are some (statements) that I made that I wish I had not," Lieberman told reporters. "In the heat of campaigns, that happens to all of us, but I regret that. And now it's time to move on."

"It's time to unite our country," said Lieberman supporter Ken Salazar, D-Colo., said entering the meeting. Salazar and Lieberman's homestate colleague Christopher Dodd led

Salazar added afterwards: "It was very clear people want Senator Lieberman to be part of the caucus."

On the other side were senators who feel that one requirement to be installed in a leadership position is party loyalty.

Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., Pat Leahy, D-Vt., and Senator-elect Jeff Merkeley, D-Ore., spoke against allowing Lieberman keep the Homeland Security and Government Affairs post. Reid, Majority Whip Dick Durbin, D-Ill., and John Kerry, D-Mass., were among those speaking in his favor, according to a Democratic aide requiring anonymity to discuss a private meeting.

Some, like Iowan Tom Harkin, still harbor hard feelings for statements Lieberman made during the campaign. Harkin took particular offense when Lieberman said a vote against funding the war in Iraq without a deadline for a troop withdrawal meant Obama had voted to cut off funding for troops in harm's way.

"That's outrageous what he said," Harkin said.

For those of you attacking Obama for his act of conciliation...please remember that you also attacked him for not going hard after Hillary or McCain/Palin. Has it occured to you that perhaps Obama has figured out something important about the current state of politics...that Rove-ian style attack dog politics no longer works, and that the vast majority of people are looking for results?

I am as disgusted as anyone by Lieberman's actions and words during the campaign, but Obama is showing that he can be bigger than any political retribution. By allowing Lieberman to keep his committee chairmanship as well as his self-respect ,Obama will have a strong ally moving into the future, rather than a bitter enemy.

This should be addressed more appropriately by the good people of Connecticut next time Lieberman is up for re-election. They should not forget his campaign promises and subsequent lies.

Joe's so called 'apology' was hardly that. He should at least have been forced to make a HUGE apology to his party and retract the statements he made about being "fearful" of Obama, the terrorist connection and just lack of respect for Obama and his family in general- UNACCEPTABLE!

Yeah, if you believe that Joe could that, then Palin is not a ring-wing wacko.

Liebertroll is the lowest form of political life in the USA. Once again, the Democrats wimp out.

Well leave it do the Dems to have chosen about the dumbest of all possible options: slap him on the wrist with a feather. For the love of Pete! I know I'm in the minority in saying this, but it would have been far better for them to have done *nothing* -- then they could at least claim that they were taking the High Road(tm) for the purposes of making it clear that it was no longer Business as Usual in Washington. I would have been totally behind that (despite my personal rage at JL). But *no*, they extract their "revenge" in weaniest way imaginable -- no strike that, *I* at least never even *imagined* that this might be the outcome.

Stupid, stupid, stupid.

It's not the best result but it is good for the short term. Joe the Traitor will NOT be re-elected so we only have him for 4 years. With Obama sort-of sticking up for him, Obama now owns Joe the Traitor. He will vote however the Dem party wants him to or he knows he is out of there. Try and see how it helps. The Dems will add Senators in the 2010 elections so Joe the Traitor will not be needed then. In reality, it's just 2 years, folks.

Connecticut voters ~ please help! Would you really vote him into office again, after he joined the Republican campaign?

To paraphrase Smokey The Bear: only YOU can prevent Lieberman.

It did not start with the Savings and Loan rapine engineered by Senator Lieberman’s friends or with the massive Enron embezzlement perpetrated by Bush’s soul mate Ken Lay.

One might have thought that most half-awake observers would have stirred from their cozy apathy after such brazen thievery had laid bare the rainy day stashes set aside in pension funds by millions of Americans.

Yet, notwithstanding a few high profile legal wrangles, such rapine has been inextricably enmeshed with the fundamental tenets of a wide assortment of free market ponzi schemes still practiced throughout the land.

Facilitating it all is the arrogant in your face politicking of the Rovian highwaymen of Wall Street and their wholly owned minions lounging in the luxuries of the US Congress.

Through manipulation of an idiotic Bush and his abusive executive powers, through spreading the gangrene of their derivative mirages, through their blind and limitless greed, the banksters have plunged this nation into an economic maelstrom.

Meanwhile, a compliant Congress rewards its masters with stacks of blank checks worth trillions of dollars, courtesy of future impoverished generations.

And the ethics of the breed are affirmed today by the Democratic Caucus and its repulsive kneeling at the feet of an arrogant Lieberman to whom they again confer the powers of a powerful committee as a reward for betraying the new standards proclaimed by the Obama campaign.

Behold the metamorphosis of the “Change” mantra...

I wonder if the most powerful lobby in history, the one that originates somewhere in the middle east and that is made up only of God's chosen people, had anything to do with this decision?

I think that allowing the extremely hawkish Lieberman to retain his position with Homeland Security sends a bad message out to the world - especially because thus far Obama's picked so many staunch Israel supporters for his team, but as far as I know not any Arab-Americans or people of Arab descent. So far, he's not showing that his administration will be a fair player in mideast affairs and this greatly concerns me.

I agree! Let Leiberman stay. He's a goner soon enough. But to give him one of the highest security chairs?!! And yes, where is the moderation to have a fair and balanced Middle East approach? :(

Its that that concerns me, not the fact he said nasty things about Obama during the election.
