ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Gov. Sarah Palin, heralded by some conservatives as the future of the Republican Party, faces some cold political realities in present-day Alaska.

Within days of the McCain-Palin ticket's defeat earlier this month, the unsuccessful GOP vice presidential nominee capped her tumultuous two months on the campaign trail with a whirlwind series of national media interviews and a headline-grabbing appearance at the Republican Governors Association meeting in Florida.

Now it's back to her day job at the state capital in Juneau.

Palin's state budget proposal is due in a month, with plummeting oil prices slashing Alaska's revenues by billions of dollars.

The 1,700-mile natural gas pipeline she bragged about on the campaign trail _ "We began a nearly $40 billion-dollar natural gas pipeline to help lead America to energy independence," she said at the Republican National Convention _ is nowhere near being built.

Some hard feelings linger over her administration's initial decision to ignore subpoenas in the investigation of whether she abused her power in firing the public safety commissioner who wouldn't oust her ex-brother-in-law from his job as a state trooper.

"The main focus is going to be on the gas line and on the long-term financial issues," said Democratic state Sen. Bill Wielechowski. "You're going to see really a clampdown on government services."

Uncertain is whether the bipartisanship that existed during Palin's 20 months as governor can survive the heated rhetoric from the presidential campaign and her own political ambitions, with the 44-year-old clearly signaling that she's open to a bid for president in 2012.

The difficult task at hand "provides the governor with a great opportunity to roll up her sleeves and get back to her job," said Kenneth Khachigian, a former adviser to President Ronald Reagan. "She's got four or five election cycles ahead of her where she can do things. She doesn't have to comment on 2012 or 2016. Being a good governor is the best thing she can do right now."

Among the challenges she faces:

_THE BUDGET:

Alaska has no income or sales tax, and a huge chunk of its annual revenue _ as much as 90 percent _ comes from taxes and fees on oil companies. When oil prices soar, as they did this summer, so do the state's coffers: Alaska in the past two years has socked away billions in its already massive savings accounts.

But one of those accounts, the $28 billion Alaska Permanent Fund, sends every Alaskan a dividend each year _ this year it was $2,069. So tapping its income to pay for government is considered political suicide, and falling oil prices can put big pressure on state spending.

The governor's chief economist is working on a new revenue forecast, and many lawmakers expect the state to drastically reduce spending on such things as road projects.

_THE PIPELINE:

With overwhelming support from Democrats, Palin awarded a license to TransCanada in August to pursue building a pipeline that would carry natural gas from Alaska's North Slope to an existing pipeline network in Alberta.

Although the state granted TransCanada $500 million to plan the pipeline, there's no guarantee it will be built. TransCanada says it won't get financing for the massive project until it has guarantees from oil companies to ship the gas through the pipeline; the oil companies say they won't give such guarantees unless Alaska sets a fixed tax rate on production of the gas, and Palin says she won't approve the rates the oil companies want.

Solving that problem will require not only cooperation from the Legislature, but probably from the oil companies Palin has battled. And her claim to being a national leader on energy issues depends on it.

_TROOPERGATE AND THE CAMPAIGN:

The episode _ and the media spotlight that resulted from Palin's vice presidential nomination _ drew attention to practices that simply can't be ignored.

Palin's administration routinely used private e-mail accounts for state business, circumventing public disclosure laws. "We will undoubtedly address that in some form of legislation," said Democratic Sen. Hollis French, who oversaw the Troopergate investigation.

Lawmakers also said they could hold hearings on, and possibly restrict, Palin's practice of charging the state for her children's travel and taking per diem payments for nights spent in her Wasilla home.

Democratic Rep. Les Gara has _ without luck _ asked the Alaska State Troopers and the Palin's appointed attorney general to investigate whether the McCain-Palin campaign urged anyone to ignore their subpoenas. Under state law, to "induce a witness to be absent" from an official proceeding to which they've been summoned is second-degree witness tampering.

But even Gara, a recently outspoken critic of Palin, said he doesn't want such matters preoccupying the government.

"There are much more important things in this state than rehashing Troopergate," Gara said. "We all have to sit down and let bygones be bygones, but it's going to take some conversations."

It is truly a shame that all of you guys have such a distorted view of Gov. Palin. If you truly don't care about her, you think she is dumb, and you are positive that she will never win any sort of office higher then governor, then why is it that you still have to bash her? I have yet to read a comment about Gov. Palin that is even worth debating. All of the comments are straight talking points, and name calling. If someone could put something about her that is truly relevant to anything, I would be flattered. It might be difficult, but try to stay away from personal attacks, because they have nothing to do with her ability to govern(according to all of you during the presidential elections)

And as for the article, the "abuse of power" that you so easily throw out there was proven to be false. And you can not say that they did not look into it enough, everyone was trying to destroy her from day one, you think that they would have looked past this if it were actually true? I think not.

Proven to be false?? By whom? The three-member bogus personnel board that was appointed by Palin herself? Oh yeah, that has a LOT of credibility... I suggest you start watching something besides Fox News.

It's wayyyyyyyyyyyyy over due for Sara Palin. She should have been out of the SPOTLIGHT longggggggggg time ago. I dont see how she was even voted to be a Governor even in Alaska. DO SHE READ AT ALL! Because she sure didnt do any homework in LEARNING about the office she was running for as VP. She had NO idea of what she was talking about or doing. I agree with 52% of the people. If GOP put Sara Palin in any office to lead for the year 2012, they will surely loose again.

Well, here's her opportunity to show she's not all fluff. Then again, when it comes to serious problems needing to be solved, there's nothing like a wal-mart liptick wearing soccer mom to fix 'er right up. You betcha (wink wink).

I'm pretty sick of this let's start over crap. These people need to be prosecuted, why can't the Democrats figure this out. Laws have been broken and someone should pay for that.

Ugh, she's the worst thing to come out of this election. The woman should shut up. Every word she utters confirms how stupid she is.

Palin is the reductio ad absurdum of the George Wallace populist strategy which allowed Republicans to dominate our politics for the last forty years. It disgraced itself in '08, and if Obama succeeds, it will never be able to win the Republicans a national majority again.

But Obama won't and the democrats will go back to the sidelines. The democratic party is made up of too many conflicting factions, tends to be revenge driven and caters to elements in our society that are alien and bizarre to most Americans.
Think about it. Yours is the party that despises the words "Merry Christmas".

Democrats don't have alien ideas, Yama. That's absurd. And to imagine we have something against "Merry Christmas" is a sure sign that your IQ is probably in the realm of 70-80. Read a book.

What "revenge" are you referring to? And what are these alien and bizarre elements? I'm not trying to give you a bad time, just really want to know what you mean.

Do you consider exorcism bizarre? Do you accept the theory of evolution? Just wondering.

errrr....I'm an evangelical....and a democrat....and I say "Merry CHRISTmas".

From the start of her political career, Palin has positioned herself as an insurgent intent on dislodging entrenched interests. In 1996, a campaign pamphlet for her first mayoral run—recently obtained by The New Republic—strikes the same note of populist resentment that Palin did at the Convention: “I’m tired of ‘business as usual’ in this town, and of the ‘Good Ol’ Boys’ network that runs the show here.” Yet Palin has routinely turned to members of Washington’s Old Guard for help. After she became the mayor of Wasilla, Palin oversaw the hiring of a law firm to represent the town’s interests in Washington, D.C. The Wasilla account was handled by Steven Silver, a Washington-area lobbyist who had been the chief of staff to Alaska’s long-serving Republican senator Ted Stevens, who was indicted in July on charges of accepting illegal gifts and is now standing trial. (Silver declined to discuss his ties to Palin.) As the Washington Post reported, Silver’s efforts in the capital helped Wasilla, a town of sixty-seven hundred residents, secure twenty-seven million dollars in federal earmarks. During this election season, however, Palin has presented herself as more abstemious, saying, “I’ve championed reform to end the abuses of earmark spending by Congress.”--The New Yorker

Wow...these people in alaska actually got a piece of the oil? I thought Republicans were AGAINST taxes....but they taxed and pulled "fees" out of the oil companies. Why would any american company pay such a tax? I guess because for one thing, gas prices were high and everyone profited (while we suffered), and for another, it's obviously part of some deal she made with them which the oil companies gladly agreed to. In other words, she got a piece of the pie. She allowed them to drill wherever they wanted, do whatever they wanted, get special consideration in the governor's office, and in exchange she got a piece of the profits. That's what it really amounted to, not a tax. That's why Exxon Mobil went for it.

Well, the gas prices are down so we'll see what chatty cathy does now with the budget.

I still can't get over that while we were all paying high gas prices and suffering, alaskans were laughing and going to the local bars and meth houses with their 2 thousand dollar oil revenue check. All on our backs. Amazing. Imagine a household....a married couple and a college age kid living at home, between them they got over 6 thousand dollars per year. EVERY YEAR. What a racket.

On the subject of Sarah Palin…

As I watched Larry King’s interview of Sarah Palin this past week-end, I thought it is only a matter of time before Sarah really shows everyone how completely off her rocker she is. But when she suggested that her now pregnant, un-wed, 17 year-old daughter should start some kind of tutoring or mentoring situation for other young females on the subject of teen pregnancies. I thought I had then heard everything.

If the Republican Party supports this woman to run for anything in the coming years, they deserve to loose, because she is not mentally capable of seeing clearly to address issues in her own personal life. So how in the world can she be expected to resolve or address anything facing a body or nation of people?

By listening to her speak, one can plainly see that she is very ambitious, and wants more than her present Governor of Alaska post. But believe me, she will be America’s worst nightmare if she ever gets a chance to go to Washington to “make some changes” as she put it in one of her earlier interviews concerning the VP position when she proceeded to give her version of its position description.

We are not talking about Palin making a fool of herself, that we can now leave to history, but whether she has made of fool of the people.

Anyone who didn't see through her BS is already a fool. She just rallied the fools all in one place.
Kind of like the Pied Piper.
