ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Gov. Sarah Palin, heralded by some conservatives as the future of the Republican Party, faces some cold political realities in present-day Alaska.

Within days of the McCain-Palin ticket's defeat earlier this month, the unsuccessful GOP vice presidential nominee capped her tumultuous two months on the campaign trail with a whirlwind series of national media interviews and a headline-grabbing appearance at the Republican Governors Association meeting in Florida.

Now it's back to her day job at the state capital in Juneau.

Palin's state budget proposal is due in a month, with plummeting oil prices slashing Alaska's revenues by billions of dollars.

The 1,700-mile natural gas pipeline she bragged about on the campaign trail _ "We began a nearly $40 billion-dollar natural gas pipeline to help lead America to energy independence," she said at the Republican National Convention _ is nowhere near being built.

Some hard feelings linger over her administration's initial decision to ignore subpoenas in the investigation of whether she abused her power in firing the public safety commissioner who wouldn't oust her ex-brother-in-law from his job as a state trooper.

"The main focus is going to be on the gas line and on the long-term financial issues," said Democratic state Sen. Bill Wielechowski. "You're going to see really a clampdown on government services."

Uncertain is whether the bipartisanship that existed during Palin's 20 months as governor can survive the heated rhetoric from the presidential campaign and her own political ambitions, with the 44-year-old clearly signaling that she's open to a bid for president in 2012.

The difficult task at hand "provides the governor with a great opportunity to roll up her sleeves and get back to her job," said Kenneth Khachigian, a former adviser to President Ronald Reagan. "She's got four or five election cycles ahead of her where she can do things. She doesn't have to comment on 2012 or 2016. Being a good governor is the best thing she can do right now."

Among the challenges she faces:

_THE BUDGET:

Alaska has no income or sales tax, and a huge chunk of its annual revenue _ as much as 90 percent _ comes from taxes and fees on oil companies. When oil prices soar, as they did this summer, so do the state's coffers: Alaska in the past two years has socked away billions in its already massive savings accounts.

But one of those accounts, the $28 billion Alaska Permanent Fund, sends every Alaskan a dividend each year _ this year it was $2,069. So tapping its income to pay for government is considered political suicide, and falling oil prices can put big pressure on state spending.

The governor's chief economist is working on a new revenue forecast, and many lawmakers expect the state to drastically reduce spending on such things as road projects.

_THE PIPELINE:

With overwhelming support from Democrats, Palin awarded a license to TransCanada in August to pursue building a pipeline that would carry natural gas from Alaska's North Slope to an existing pipeline network in Alberta.

Although the state granted TransCanada $500 million to plan the pipeline, there's no guarantee it will be built. TransCanada says it won't get financing for the massive project until it has guarantees from oil companies to ship the gas through the pipeline; the oil companies say they won't give such guarantees unless Alaska sets a fixed tax rate on production of the gas, and Palin says she won't approve the rates the oil companies want.

Solving that problem will require not only cooperation from the Legislature, but probably from the oil companies Palin has battled. And her claim to being a national leader on energy issues depends on it.

_TROOPERGATE AND THE CAMPAIGN:

The episode _ and the media spotlight that resulted from Palin's vice presidential nomination _ drew attention to practices that simply can't be ignored.

Palin's administration routinely used private e-mail accounts for state business, circumventing public disclosure laws. "We will undoubtedly address that in some form of legislation," said Democratic Sen. Hollis French, who oversaw the Troopergate investigation.

Lawmakers also said they could hold hearings on, and possibly restrict, Palin's practice of charging the state for her children's travel and taking per diem payments for nights spent in her Wasilla home.

Democratic Rep. Les Gara has _ without luck _ asked the Alaska State Troopers and the Palin's appointed attorney general to investigate whether the McCain-Palin campaign urged anyone to ignore their subpoenas. Under state law, to "induce a witness to be absent" from an official proceeding to which they've been summoned is second-degree witness tampering.

But even Gara, a recently outspoken critic of Palin, said he doesn't want such matters preoccupying the government.

"There are much more important things in this state than rehashing Troopergate," Gara said. "We all have to sit down and let bygones be bygones, but it's going to take some conversations."

One has to wonder why Palin would want to be president when she knows absolutely nothing? I do not want to help NASA put a rocket on Mars because I know little math or physics.

I can't decide what would make me more happy.
Choice #1: I don't have to hear about Sarah Palin for at least one full year, because she puts her nose to the grindstone and concentrates on being Governor, including delaying any multi-million dollar book deals and forgetting about waging a personal PR campaign for her national political future.
Choice #2: Sarah Palin persists in believing that she has a national political future and quickly implodes in full public view and then loses her re-election bid in the next gubernatorial election.
Okay, fine...........I think she is a joke. But, obviously lots of other people take her seriously, so I can only hope that there is a way to shut her up, if not disappear from all media.

It's going to be tough to keep those favorability ratings up there when you can't bribe your constituents with checks from the oil companies.

See, here's the deal some dim-ocrats don't get. If you don't care about someone you ignore them. If they are irrelevant you don't even look their way. if you aren't scared like little rabbits you have nothing to say.

But if you are intimidated, scared and concerned about someone you tend to focus on them, denigrate them, get in a circle with your other specious folk and self congratulate.

She had you going. Admit it. She was beautiful. Tough. A real woman not afraid of you. And you can't stand it. So even after she lost, you just can't leave it alone...because you are scared.

I am so scared. After the elections of GWB I realized our country could elect ANYBODY, no matter how unqualified in the mental department. Sarah Plain IS beautiful--which will make her all the more dangerous for a while.

This country cannot survive another idiocracy like the Bush administration. We will be a second-tier country if that hapens.

Yeah, and she was more stupid than even Shrub. Low animal cunning is one thing, but you need more than that if you're going to try to convince people you're up for any future national political position. And if this is a place where liberals or whoever congregate, why are you reading it? And commenting on it? ("If you aren't scared like little rabbits you have nothing to say.")

She's the one trying to keep the spotlight on herself. Now a book deal? I hope she continues to thrust herself into the MSM. I know that the more exposure she receives, the more she ruins any national aspirations she may have. I don't care the least that she is "not afraid of us". The more Americans learn about this dimwit, the more afraid they will become of her.

Well, thanks for calling us Democrats dim. That's a classy way to start the conversation. You're right about one thing though; she did have me going. I couldn't believe that someone as unqualified as her might actually get elected. Happily, most of America agreed that she had no business in the White House. It was her thinly veiled appeals to racism, sarcasm and consistent lack of substance that bothered me, not her 'beauty' or spunk--which, in general, I'm inclined to admire, but had couldn't make up for what she so clearly lacked.

Palin is going no where.

People in Alaska Loved her because of the Fund check and the extra
$1200 she handed out this year. A family of four pulled in close to $16000 dollar this year..
( you can buy a lot of love for $16,000 bucks)

This year with the stock market in the tank , oil prices taking a dive and an economic slow down going on up north. There will be little if any easy money from the gov. Many will blame her for bad times as credited her for good times and her time will be up.

Then there is her 6 million dollar book deal.

There's no hope for people in Alaska, though the gallant bands of protesters who came out against Palin were wonderful to see. The problem is that the crooked control their government, and even though Palin abused her power, abused the generosity of the govt through crooked schemes and stealing money from them basically with her idiotic per diems, they will still elect her. So sad really.

I don't see a difference between Alaska and any oil country. Oil is a commodity, highly cyclical, dependent on the economic cycles. Oil spoils the producing countries by making them think and look rich. Real economy is created by increasing productivity, innovation, education, trivial things like this. Oil rulers think they are really smart when the oil prices are high. The truth is they are anything but smart. In that respect, Palin is a typical "oil country ruler". Cocky when the prices are rising, but let's see how she does at $50/barrel.

The best way to make sure Sarah the Wolf Killer doesn't rise again in 2012, is to help mobilize Alaska and have another governer elected, make sure any senate bid is unsuccessful and keep her out of office. Don't storm yourselves up on stories of what 'might be', 'could have' and 'read somewhere'. There's plenty of information straight from the public records and Alaska news that make clear her views, her executive patterns, and her abuses of power and posistion. Simply use them. There's enough in the stew already. Alaska deserves a governer that will protect its people, wildlife, and resources. They deserve a governer that won't take public funds to pad their own expense accounts or use their posistion to pursue a personal grudges. If we, and I think we showed on election day that we did, believe that America deserves better than that - than the state of Alaska deserves no less.

Now that the election is over, the real exposure of Sarah Palin will begin.

Because she was so unknown, the flaws in her arguments were not broadly known. Dems knew she was misrepresenting...everything...but because no one else knew, their accusations would have been positioned as "sexist" when, in fact, she was basically running on a "speech or accusation a day" platform. She was given way too much leeway.

Now, over time, the truth of her will be released and any future elections will be based on the reality of Sarah Palin rather than the 60 day myth the GOP was selling.

That said, it would be great if she did run in 2012.

The National Enquirer (and others like them) now has 4 years to 'vet' her. The more she puts herself out into the national media, the more she will be scrutinzed.....and the more that America will realize how lucky we were that she never got within a heartbeat away from being POTUS.
