The Politico reports:

Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) ducked out of a GOP conference meeting briefly and talked with reporters waiting outside. He said that he has not been asked to make any remarks and appeared confident and upbeat, flashing a smile. The image conflicted with his dour comments to the gathered reporters.

"I wouldn't wish what I'm going through on anyone--my worst enemy," he said. Asked if it hurt to go through today's ordeal on his birthday, he responded, "Hurt? I haven't had a night's sleep now for almost four months, alright? I went home even during the trial and I came to the senate [on] nights after the trial. I've been living about three different lives and it's hard to even answer your questions properly, but I'm doing my best."

...

In the meantime, would he be seeking a pardon from President Bush?

"No, no, no," he said.

Walking back into the Mansfield room to join his colleagues, a reporter wished him a happy birthday.

"I hope you have a better one than me," replied Stevens.

Stevens can at least take comfort in the fact that his fellow Republicans plan to put off a vote on whether he should be expelled from the caucus. Their reason: if Stevens loses his reelection bid, they won't have to make the decision.

Stevens should step down, and go home and get a good night's sleep. At his age, he ought to want to have some peace and quiet in his life. The worry of going to prison at such a ripe old age--that is nightmarish.

Stevens: "I wouldn't wish this on anyone"
Then you should have thought about that before you committed the act. You're only apologetic/humble because you were caught.

"Republicans plan to put off a vote on whether he should be expelled from the caucus..."
Typical GOP, willing to give the all of America the finger when it comes to policies, but when one of their own is found guilty in a court of law, they don't have the nerve/n*ts/spine to reprimand him and would rather wait until someone else can do it so they can save what little face they have left.

Really? You wouldn't wish that anyone who was convicted of seven felony counts would have to beg and plead to keep his high-paid phoney-baloney job?

And I thought Republicans believed in law and order, being tough on crime, etc etc.

Yeah, Mr Stevens, you might want to consider that it's not really a good thing to "...have lots of things in your house that don't belong to you." That had to have been the funniest moment in your trial...are you a kleptomaniac, or what?

It looks like that unlike the internet, it's pretty easy to dump something on your life.

News Flash Senator:

You have, in fact, wished this, and several other personal travesties on many people, not only your "worst enemies". By your support of such legislation as the MCA, Patriot Act, Deregulation of essential industries, removal of oversight of essential Governmental services, etc. etc. etc.

YOUR PARTY, and by association, YOU, have visited some of the most repulsive, offensive, and unconscionable acts upon many of the citizens that you swore an oath to protect. You may want to think back to that oath, it never included the words "those who voted for me" or "those who contributed to my campaign" as definitive descriptors of WHO YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO SERVE!

The implication is that this has been a "witch-hunt" or "partisan politics" (both of which I would rebut, as the debate for either side is certainly supported with ample evidence), but the reality is Senator, that you have supported the exact same kind of Political Gamesmanship in the past.

Welcome to Karma, Senator, ain't it a B i t c h?

Hey, Stevens, you should see what a lot of us are going through out here in America -- and we didn't do anything wrong. I don't wish it on any of US.

As for you, you made your bed. Tell it to someone who cares. And that's not me.
