The Wall Street Journal reports Wednesday that Dan Abrams, former MSNBC general manager and host of the 9PM hour, has launched a media strategy firm, Abrams Research. The firm will "offer corporate clients access to advice" from what the article describes as "media insiders." From the WSJ:

Want good press? Hire a journalist. That's Dan Abrams's pitch.

The former general manager of MSNBC is launching a media-strategy firm, Abrams Research, to help business executives navigate public-relations challenges -- from major acquisitions to bothersome bloggers to outright scandals.

The firm's chief selling point will be a network of media insiders whose advice is available in exchange for an hourly fee. Mr. Abrams has assembled a roster of "thousands" of such professionals, he says, with the aid of former Huffington Post media writer Rachel Sklar. The firm has already signed its first client: billionaire investor Ronald Perelman.

The Journal says that Abrams "plans to continue working as an outside legal analyst for NBC News."

The New York Times describes Abrams Research as "a consulting firm that...will connect a global Rolodex of media experts with businesses that need strategic advice." The Times also reports that Abrams will closely police potential conflicts of interest as journalists bridge the press/consultant divide:

Working on media strategies with businesses could raise ethical red flags for journalists who were required to be detached and objective about the subjects they covered. Mr. Abrams said the company would "bend over backwards to make sure that there are no conflicts or ethical issues that arise."

He said he planned to broaden the network of experts beyond traditional journalists, employing media analysts, bloggers and others who might not operate under such stringent rules. He said he was especially interested in connecting bloggers with businesses that had trouble dealing with online media.

The firm's website, AbramsResearch.com, describes the company accordingly:

Abrams Research is a media strategy firm that connects business leaders with a global community of media professionals. Our proprietary data networks and global contacts allow us to target strategically selected media insiders to offer insights, data and personnel never before available to businesses for image enhancement, branding, investigative reporting and the execution of the best media plan.

The firm's board of advisers includes media heavyweights from various areas of the media: Former NBC Universal Chairman Bob Wright, Fox Entertainment President Kevin Reilly, HBO's Bryant Gumbel, Court TV founder Steven Brill, Former American Media Editorial Director Bonnie Fuller, Men's and Women's Health editor David Zinczenko, Curbed Network Founder Lockhart Steele, Former New York Times Sunday Business editor Judith Dobrzynski, and NBC Travel editor Peter Greenberg.

Abrams Research Launches

Board of Advisors includes top names in media.

Dan Abrams announces the launch of Abrams Research, a unique global strategy firm that connects business leaders with top media professionals around the world. Businesses can now communicate directly with experienced media insiders, bloggers, and authors in almost any region or area of expertise. This unprecedented access to a wide range of experts can help companies make smarter decisions about marketing and communication. In addition, Abrams Research offers valuable perspective on local media, specific journalists, government officials or even crucial details about local customs.

"With this global network we will offer businesses more targeted, relevant and cost-effective media advice than has ever before been available," said Dan Abrams, the firm's CEO and founder.

The Abrams Research Board of Advisors includes top leaders from almost every area of media: Former NBC Universal Chairman Bob Wright, Fox Entertainment President Kevin Reilly, HBO's Bryant Gumbel, Court TV founder Steven Brill, Former American Media Editorial Director Bonnie Fuller, Men's and Women's Health editor David Zinczenko, Curbed Network Founder Lockhart Steele, Former New York Times Sunday Business editor Judith Dobrzynski, and NBC Travel editor Peter Greenberg.

Abrams is the former General Manager of MSNBC and a Columbia University-trained attorney, who has appeared on NBC News and MSNBC as a reporter and anchor since 1995. He now continues with NBC News and MSNBC as a contributor in the role of Chief Legal Analyst. While Abrams himself offers businesses a trusted media advisor and attorney uniquely positioned to unite legal and corporate communications strategies, that same level of specialized expertise is now available on a far broader scale through the Abrams Research Network. "By offering businesses insight into how the relevant media will best respond to any strategy, campaign, product, initiative or crisis, I believe the often contentious relationship between business and media will improve," said Abrams.

Abrams Research has also established strategic partnerships with major PR and media strategy firms including Dan Klores Communications and The Abernathy Macgregor Group.

I was wondering what had become of Dan. GL dude. I'll miss seeing ya on TV. Don't know what to make of your biz. Seems to be how to have style triumph over substance. Why isn't having the goods the right thing anymore? Isn't that what's wrong with America?

Why was my prior comment censored? This blogger (Adrienne Williams) needs to add something of substance, some analysis, spell correctly, and stop massaging egos of talking heads.

i liked dan's show. i do like rachel's better though. why wasn't there room for them both? i know finances are an issue but geez didn't keith just snag a $30 mil contract? also, what happened to tucker carlson? i'm no big fan but it seems that people just disappear from a network one day with no explanation.

NBC offered Dan several anchor positions. He turned them down because he's wanted to start his own business for some time now. So it isn't a case of them not wanting him on-air...

Can you add something sometimes besides fluff? How about substance or analysis? And it's congrats - with a "t". Are you a professional writer?

I find him really attractive but not with that type of facial hair. What's with that look you guys? It looks dirty to me. He is smart and quick and nerdy and attractive, just what I like.

Oh my gosh - I want to have Dan's baby! LOL! Hey, good luck Dan. No doubt he will be successful at anything he does.

I had a love/hate relationship with Dan Abrams' show during the primaries, leaning toward hate everytime he tried to beat us over the head with "Hillary for Veep". But since his departure I've been wondering, did anyone else notice that he was canceled not long after he began going HARD after Karl Rove? Was it just a coincidence? I have no opinion on that one way or the other (or maybe don't want to face what might have happended), but does anyone else think it had anything to do with his departure? I hope not, perhaps it was just ratings although I found his format and guests one of the more entertaining of the previous MSNBC lineup. Love Rachel now, but I do miss Dan a little bit!

His take on Rove had nothing to do with it. Olbermann pushed for Rachel to get her own show. Olbermann detested Abrams and used his influence to get Rachel into Dan's slot.

They should have ousted Gregory and not Abrams.

Abrams was too much competition. Too much 6ual tension for he and Contessa, if you know what I mean.

I would have dumped Gregory in a hot second. We should be able to have Rachel and Dan. I want my cake and eat it too--so to speak! ;*]

Gee, now it's so clear to me why Rachel Sklar (former inept HP writer) was always harping on Keith Olbermann. Her bud Dan and her can now work closely with corportations to blunt criticism in the media by the media and fight against nasty bloggers. Nice, huh?

For those of you who like Dan, I really don't get it.

I adore Dan, and have missed his show, MSNBC has been doing some scheduling and making other changes, that have made me change my evening schedule, excluding a lot of theirs. I have followed Dan Abrams since his early days with Court TV, and wish him all the best in his new venture.(Still miss his 9:00PM show; he and Contessa Brewer were an entertaining and funny combination, if they had just given them more time!)Good Luck and much success, Dan!

i did not like abrams at court tv- he seemed to pin his total legal career on befriending ron goldman's family, it was a creepy thing to watch unfold.

contessa brewer with that melissa person from cnbc - they together really annoy me.

contessa does a lot of worthless late night caught on tape shows for msnbc- she needs to develop her reporting skills more rather than just sounding like a curmudgeon- i found her awful when she was on with abrams.

i don't understand why they put Savannah Guthrie on during the 12pmpst/3pm est hour- she is not good

The world is big enough for the Contessa Brewers of the world. I was sort of shocked, but not in a bad way, by the shirt she wore on Abram's last night. Very provocative. I think she had a crush.... I enjoyed the juxtaposition of those two. It was fun.

abrams show was so much better than rachel's

he is non-partisan.

she is just snarky.

Snark is necessary with all to the political inepts running around. I live for snark. It restores me.

I was sorry to see him leave his 9:00pm show. It was a bit lighter thatn the rest of the heavy duty lineup on MSNBC. I love Rachel Maddow but she needs help. she should not be doing a broadcast without a cohost, she works much better then. She is brilliant, but i wish Dan was still there.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:50 PM on 11/19/2008

Rachel Maddow is great - and her show is the highest rated - abrams never brought in the numbers she brings in--so she is doing something right.

He is going to try to control the content on blogs?

and Rachel Sklar is going to help him?

he photographs well but on tv he isn't that attractive, comes off really strident too

my opinion=another one with a wealthy well connected father who got him up the chain faster than others who had to work for it

succinctly put!

The Rachel Maddow Show has been a solid addition, but the hour they should have lost was Hardball with Chris Matthews. While occasionally entertaining when Matthews develops a spine and takes on some spinning BS artist, normally it is just the usual suspects spouting the conventional wisdom

There are dozens of alternatives that give exactly what Hardball delivers. Abrams brought something distinct

Why not Olberman, Maddow, Abrams?

Although... Bryant Gumbel on the Board of Advisors??? Dan, what were you thinking?
