I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Not So Fast Christmasboy

Last week, I noted how Fox's Bill O'Reilly, as per usual, was kicking his annual "War On Christmas" into high gear. Each year, O'Reilly inveighs against people, especially retailers, who refuse to offer him the proper "Merry Christmas" greeting -- opting instead for the ecumenical "Happy Holidays." This is clearly threatening the fabric of our great republic! But, if you remember, we warned that parent company News Corp. was a frequent antagonist in O'Reilly's personal yuletide psychodrama, consistently using the "Happy Holidays" solicitation.

Well, O'Reilly's "War On Christmas" aggression is about to be turned inward, as soon as he discovers that he avoids using "Merry Christmas" himself! The folks over at NewsHounds capture this image from O'Reilly's own site:

OH NOES! A "Holiday Reading List?" What's with all the secular humanisting? And really, what on earth is this mention of "the winter season?" Could it be that O'Reilly is secretly worshiping Wiccan moon gods at Solstice time?

Bill O doesn't do this for any reason other than he believes it is what his viewers want. Fox is in it for the ratings, not for the statement. Bill O is graded on the ratings, and uses them to negotiate future salaries. If Bill really had as much hate inside him as he spews forth daily, he would explode. He exagerates, provokes, and stirs the ants nest because it sells.

When people stop watching this garbage, there will be no market for it.

Not specifically wishing someone a Merry Christmas is recognizing and respecting that there are those who do not celebrate Christmas. I wish people Happy Mother's Day all day on Mother's Day regardless of their age, sex, or lack of offspring because the fact that they are not a mother doesn't change the fact that it is Mother's Day, and I want them to be happy every day, so Happy Mother's Day!

I agree. And it's likewise not disrespectful to wish someone who isn't religious a Merry Christmas. We Americans sure worry about a lot of stuff that really doesn't matter! We love a controversy . . .

Here's a great idea.

Last Christmas our extended family decided that instead of buying gifts for one another (apart from the chilldren), we would donate our Christmas gift money to charity instead.
As a consequence, some poor families in the Sudan received a gift from our families. We chose to give a herd of goats, from which some poverty ridden villagers could obtain milk and meat to help feed their starving families.

There are some great gift ideas available on the internet.
For example, through TEAR Australia you can choose between;
$5 - School Supplies
$10 - Mosquito Net
$10 - Tree Seedlings
$20 - Safe Water
$20 - Where Needed Most
$25 - Organic Vegetable Garden
$35 - Literacy Skills
$40 - Family Health Care
$45 - Primary Schooling
$50 - Goat
$60 - Village Health Worker / Birth Attendant Training
$70 - Toilet
$85 - HIV Care
$100 - Small Business Loan
$100 - Disabilities Assistance
$150 - Rice Bank
$200 - Women’s Self-Help Group
$550 - Community School
$1500 - Well
$5000 - Village Package

There are many such charities which do this kind of good work. Here's another good example;

'CARE Australia', is training Sudanese women in internally displaced people camps to make fuel-efficient stoves from mud to replace small and inefficient stoves made from old oil tins. The new stoves emit less smoke and cut down cooking time, lowering the production of greenhouse gases and reducing deforestation around the camps because less firewood is needed.

My husband and I did that for our parents and grandparents last year, bought donations in their name, and they loved it. My grandmother framed the certificate we sent her and bragged for months that I always gave the most thoughtful gifts. She recently passed away, but I'll be giving a donation in her name again this year as a way to remember her.

Proof that someone is a Christian

1. They have actually read the Bible

2. Cling to God rather than guns

3. Actually believe in turning the other cheek

4. Forgiveness

5. Live the Christian life rather than giving it lip service

6. Does not use the word of God as a weapon to belittle others and the choice they make.

7. Understand that God loves everyone, yes, including the homosexuals.

And that sir/madam is your choice. No one and I mean no one should be allowed to tell you to say "Happy Holidays". However, please extend the same courtesy to someone who does not believe in Christ, as a Christian we need to be the adults and lead by the examples of Christ instead of behaving like snot nosed brats.

I am Jewish - would you wish me a Merry Christmas?
If you do, can I wish you a Happy Chanukah?

I'm not religious, but I'd be very pleased to be wished a Merry Christmas or a Happy Chanukah! Your preference. Just don't wish me sad or lonely, okay:? :-)

Does anyone think for one minute that people like Bill O, Rush and Hannity actually give a rats dropping about any Christian? These people are out to divide people. They find a wedge issue and drive it home.

Both sides need to sit down and shut up. Seriously, with all that is facing the nation this is by far the least of our problems. If you are a christian say merry christmas. If you are not say whatever the hell you want. If you are not a christian and a christian says merry christmas, smile and go about your business, same rule applies to a christian being told "Happy Holidays". Good god people, stop behaving like a bunch of whining children and get with the f-ing program.

For over 5 decades I have joyously said "Merry Christmas" without consciously realizing the religious connotation or effect. I have Bill to thank for my awakening. Now, I only say Merry Christmas in courteous response to the same and am vigilent to only say Happy Holidays first...as I would not want in any way, shape, or form to be associated with his hyped disgusting hypocrisy.

Thank you Bill for turning joy to repugnance for many.

As a Jew, we are quite used to people wishing us Merry Christmas.
It's just too bad this pot had to be stirred...so now when it comes to people feeling bad for saying that, well that's just not in the spirit of the holidays.
However, what bothers me are people who are so EMPHATIC about being offended by someone wishing them Happy Holidays. That's just small-minded ignorance on their part.

PS don't feel bad if you slip up...we won't be offended....:).

People start shopping for the holidays starting on or before Halloween. There are several holidays to be celebrated between October and Jan. Saying "Happy Holidays" seems appropriate regardless of your religion or lack of.
