I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Not So Fast Christmasboy

Last week, I noted how Fox's Bill O'Reilly, as per usual, was kicking his annual "War On Christmas" into high gear. Each year, O'Reilly inveighs against people, especially retailers, who refuse to offer him the proper "Merry Christmas" greeting -- opting instead for the ecumenical "Happy Holidays." This is clearly threatening the fabric of our great republic! But, if you remember, we warned that parent company News Corp. was a frequent antagonist in O'Reilly's personal yuletide psychodrama, consistently using the "Happy Holidays" solicitation.

Well, O'Reilly's "War On Christmas" aggression is about to be turned inward, as soon as he discovers that he avoids using "Merry Christmas" himself! The folks over at NewsHounds capture this image from O'Reilly's own site:

OH NOES! A "Holiday Reading List?" What's with all the secular humanisting? And really, what on earth is this mention of "the winter season?" Could it be that O'Reilly is secretly worshiping Wiccan moon gods at Solstice time?

Why is Christmas even still around? Why don't we just give it back to the fundies and go ahead and declare someday in the summer to be the "national buy your relatives a bunch of useless cr@p" day? At least we wouldn't have to go to the mall in our hats and gloves and overcoats.

Give it back? It wasn't theirs to begin with. Jesus wasn't born in December.

The Holiday season is slowly rejecting Christ Mass like a transplanted organ.

About ten years ago I let my family know that I no longer celebrate xmas. End of story. What's showing at the cinema?

Shop on line and shop smart. If you're going to give a gift then give something useful like money.

To answer your second question, it would defeat the purpose of celebrating Christmas the way that we do in the first place; Christmas was not a traditional American holiday for the first century or so. It only began to be celebrated widely when retailers, looking for a way to boost sales during the lowest point of their season, hit upon Christmas and started marketing it heavily with sales and other promotions. "Rudolph, the Red Nosed Reindeer" was originally an advertising jingle, for crying out loud.

Which is why it is ironic to hear people lament that Christmas has "become" so commercialized. If it wasn't for the commercial angle, most people wouldn't even observe it in the first place.

"Christmas Warrior O'Reilly Doesn't Practice What He Preaches"

and this comes as a surprise to whom exactly? :)

Oh, BFD. Christians stole all the Solstice celebrations from the Pagans and turned them into Christmas, Easter, and whatever else.

No one is stopping O'R from saying "Merry Christmas". He obviously says what he wants anyway.

And gets the big bucks for it.

O'Reilly will get his wish from Santa - maybe his two front teeth will get knocked out. But really those retailers will pay for their unsacntimonious treatment of the Holy Day - with shoppers just staying away in protest. Oh- is the economy that bad? Thought shoppers were protesting the "happy holidays" treatment.

Nonsense

There is nothing in the bible about celebrating Christmas

Its a pagan based holy day with with full of Pagan trappings and has nothing to do with the birth of christ.

Christ wa not born in Dec, its about the Pagan celebration of the winter solstice

Celebrating the birth of a guy who said not to amass worldly things by amassing worldly things. Gosh

Wasn't the date picked by the same group that picked the sacraments and the 4 gospels?

The traditional decorated tree that we put up around this time of the year IS mentioned in the Old Testament, though. It's in the 10th Chapter of Jeremiah, verses 1 through 4.

It says "Learn not the way of the heathen..."

Oh, come on Pagan or not people want to shop! They want to
7 days a week 24 hours a day, despite recession or economic
hardship. That's why we are open on Sundays now. That's why
big retailers are oen 24/7. That's why malls open at midnight.
Who needs family time around the turkey or Christmas tree, you
don't see them at any other time. Except maybe funerals.
Who said "go shopping" again?
Who do you think pushed for this version of "family values?"

O'Reilly... What can we say. Waste of money, waste of time, waste of broadband. The only good thing about him is that he keeps other people employed.

Extreme Falafels
The Falafel Game
Tales from the Falafel Side
The Falafel Nobody Wanted

This article has to be a joke and why i wasted my time reading it is beyond me. I never seen anything so small in my life like this writer. Guess I wasted enough time on this already.

Is this the definition of a "straw man" or what?

What's next? He comes out in favor of puppies?

I'm a liberal Dem and while I haven't been to church for a long time, I still consider myself spiritual. I LOVE Christmas and call it Christmas. I'm actually fine with that. Not all liberal Dems think alike.
But I also recognize that some folks don't like religious holidays -- so I don't send them cards, or presents or invite them for holiday dinner...
But ...don't we have other things to worry about Billo? Isn't it about time we started including people and stopped trying to divide them, Billo?
I think I'll send him a loofah to cheer him up....

At least with O'Reilly libs have something inexpensive to send him in your mockery.

Can you imagine the shipping on a bathtub to Olbermann, let alone the cost? And what if you're feeling really generous and want to give the gift of installing it for him too??

I'm just sayin'...

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:03 PM on 11/19/2008

I don't think it's that people don't like the holidays, they just don't appreciate being assumed to be one thing when they aren't. Happy Holidays is a much easier way of celebrating diversity than to just assume everyone is a Christian.

"Wiccan moon gods at Solstice time"

LOL, actually we celebrate different things, depending on the family and specific traditions but more likely than "moon gods" would the Goddess as represented by the moon, or the end of the battle between the Holly King and the Oak King (metaphorically).

But I take it in the spirit with which it was written. Very funny stuff.

And let's all remember the true reason for this season, traditional pagan Sabbats. All I'm saying is no matter how awesome Jesus is, his birthday was strategically placed over an existing holiday. So if we're going to talk about "holy days" let's start with that good Olde Time religion. :)
