LONDON — Does white powder damage your green credentials?

Colombia's vice president said Tuesday that Britain's middle classes, who recycle and haul shopping home in reusable cloth bags, should realize that they are destroying the rain forests by taking cocaine.

"These people, who have good jobs and drive a hybrid car or cycle to work because they care about the environment, may go to party and do some lines of coke and they are thinking it is no problem," Francisco Santos told The Associated Press Tuesday. "They are absolutely unaware of the ecological impact of their drug taking and we want to change that."

Santos is not the first person to take on Britain's middle class drug users. In 2005, London's Metropolitan Police chief Ian Blair said he would target affluent drug users, who he said offered lines of cocaine to dinner party guests along with good wine and organic vegetables.

But about 7.7 per cent of Britons used cocaine last year _ the highest rate in Europe and over double the rate ten years ago, according to statistics from the European Union and the British government.

Taking cocaine is not seen as a career-destroying move, either.

Three years ago a newspaper published a photograph of wildly popular model Kate Moss apparently snorting a white powder through a rolled-up five-pound note. An apology and a stint in rehabilitation in the United States was enough to allow her to regain her status as a top model and style setter.

Now Santos hopes his message _ that snorting cocaine harms the environment _ will resonate in Britain, where recycling rates have leapt in recent years and supermarkets have begun to discourage customers from using plastic bags.

The Colombian government says four sq. meters (4.8 sq. yards) of rain forest have to be cleared to produce a gram of cocaine _ and 2.2 million hectares (5.44 million acres) of Colombian tropical forest have been cut down to grow coca in the last twenty years.

Colombia launched a campaign to make Europeans aware of the impact of the drug industry on their country two years ago. But European cocaine use has doubled in the last year, and Santos is changing tack and hopes that a plea to people's eco-conscience will get through. Santos plans to launch a similar campaign in the US next year.

"Cocaine is seen as the champagne of drugs and people who would not take heroin or amphetamines take cocaine and say there are no victims, but there are," Santos said. "We want to show them destroyed rain forests, wasted land. Maybe if they don't care about their own brains they care about this."

Cocaine is classified as a Class A drug in Britain, which means it carries the stiffest penalties for dealing and possession. People found guilty of possession can be jailed for seven years or given an unlimited fine, but police say it is still considered more glamorous than other Class A drugs like heroin and ecstasy.

I think most of these comments are missing the point: it doesn't matter that the war on drugs is a fiasco- there's still an issue of personal responsibility. If you use cocaine, you've still given money to an evil system- no less greedy than any capitalist system. Read my comments, I don't care if you disagree with me, just don't be obscene: http://heatherleila3.blogspot.com/2008/12/drugs-are-human-rights-violation.html

Does white powder damage your green credentials?

The second-in-command of the Pentagon's failed authoritarian regime imposed upon Columbians said Tuesday that Britain's middle classes, who recycle and haul shopping home in reusable cloth bags, should realize that they are destroying the rain forests by taking cocaine.

What an ignorant Title. Coca Leaf isn't killing Forrests.

US Policy on not allowing Coca Leaf Tea to be a staple import has created the Cocaine Cartels and they the drug lords have logically destroyed more Forrest lands to grow more Coca Leaf knowing damn well that a benign and highly nutritous supplement that is Coca Leaf is barred from export to the largest Cocaine Market--The United States of America.

The USDA in 1950s released their chemical breakdown of Coca Leaf and found over 50 vitamins and minerals, plus calcium levels so high that the need for Milk was unnecessary with just 3 grams of Loose leaf Tea [think Green Tea] as a daily consumption.

The Peruvians have extremely low levels of osteoporosis and they didscovered they also have high immunes to various forms of cancers. Their daily diet consists of coca leaf used as tea and chaw.

Unlike Tobacco that gives you cancer this benign plant [when it's not broken down by the tonnage to extract the active agent for cocaine] only releases benign benefits to the human condition.

I suppose the War on Drugs is far sexier than people sitting around sipping teas for health.

Solution: Abolish the ban and work with the farmers with our farming community to import the teas.

Most people don't know that prussic acid comes from Peaches in the form of the pit, but we don't ban the growth of Peaches.

We dow ourselves by becoming more educated in the biosciences.

That's a lot of hot air. Let people get high on what they want in these screwed up times. Their bodies are their's and they can do with them whatever they want. The government, ours and the Colombians has other priorities,

Bush does seem despondent. This article cause me to question cocaine use statistics; I found that Spain is #1, you gotta wonder if that is why we never hear anything from Iberia.

Millions more acres have been destroyed by America's failed War Against Drugs through the spraying of toxic chemicals on farm land than have been destroyed by growers cutting down forests.

The chemicals sprayed not only kill the coca plants but also render the land toxic for up to ten years.

Prohibition has never worked, it never will work. Drugs are not the problem, prohibition is. Prohibition is what leads to uncontrolled, unregulated black market distribution and sales.

It only took thirteen years for our leaders to realize alcohol prohibition created more problems than it was supposed to solve. Our thirty plus year drug war has wasted over one trillion dollars and destroyed more lives than the illegal drugs have.

Illegal drugs are far easier for our children to obtain than the legal ones, i.e., tobacco and alcohol. Sellers of tobacco and alcohol are required by law to verify the age of the purchaser, black market dealers of illegal drugs are not.

The war against drugs is a Golden Goose laying millions of eggs for those who support it.

Nonsense.

Prohibition kills Colombian forests.

The coca plant could be farmed safely like any other, but it is the war on drugs which prompts farmers to hide their crops in the forest, while at the same time keeping the prices for that plant's products high and encouraging them to keep planting it.

Cocaine is less addictive and less deadly than both alcohol and cigarrettes. It is time to end the bloodshed, the corruption, and, yes, the environmental destruction, and LEGALIZE IT!

This article is biased against cocaine.

And it does not take into account how fun doing coke is.

No, the U.S. deforestation campaign to fight drugs is what harms the ecology there.

Killjoy!

You're ruining a perfectly good bait and switch on the ineptitude and ineffectiveness of our relationship with the Columbian Government and our war on drugs.

I'm glad to see all the people commenting know this campaign is complete bullshit.

All I can say is that I want fair-trade, organic, USDA Grade A drugs at a reasonable price.

And whoever writes this anti-drug crap - eventually they will learn to just f*ck off!

I'd like to hit George Bush and Bill Clinton with a back-hand right in the mouth, because they've both had plenty of cocaine, marijuana, and other stuff, and they tormented other drug users for two terms each.

Two members of my family went to prison for marijuana and I want revenge on the hypocrites.
