Planting Trees

Thousands of Macedonians took to the hills and forests on Wednesday to plant six million trees in a single day as part of a mass reforestation drive in the Balkan country.

The main aim of the campaign was to replant Macedonia's forests after extensive wild fires over the past two summers, and organizers trumpeted the scheme's environmental benefits at a time of global warming.

"Our goal is to make Macedonia "greener" and make people more aware of the needs of this planet," said Macedonian opera singer Boris Trajanov, who initiated the project.

Wow, way to go! How hard could it be for something like that to be organized in the United States? If they can do it, I agree...why can't we? Just think - a national tree planting day.....we would plant way more than six million trees! I'd help!

This is great. And they did it in only one day. Even if only a tenth of those seedlings survive, the project would still be a success.

And what does our president do: "Animals and plants in danger of becoming extinct could lose the protection of government experts who make sure that dams, highways and other projects don't pose a threat, under regulations the Bush administration is set to put in place before President-elect Obama can reverse them."

No bloody wonder that the world will start to revolve once again, after this nut job goes back where he belongs!! Ever think that if he travels, he'll be arrested, tried, and sentenced!

Why isn't this a MAJOR headline on every feasible news form of media? This is a direct challenge to the rest of the world to meet this level of responsibility. If this were turned into a contest (which it shouldn't need to be) we'd all literally be breathing a whole lot easier, and soon. This is a turning point in my mind for active eco-minded organization.

Excellent work! Why don't we do the same in the Western hemisphere? It couldn't hurt! Anybody know where to get some trees to plant?

In Boston the city gives away free trees. There are days when they have big "tree give aways" or you can just contact the city and they will arrange for you to get a tree. The goal is to plant 100,000 new trees in Boston.

I thought Boston was onto something, but Macedonia shows we set our sights too low!
