JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Republican John McCain has defeated President-elect Barack Obama in Missouri _ the last state to be decided in the 2008 presidential election.

McCain's narrow victory over Obama breaks a bellwether streak in which Missourians had picked the winning presidential candidate in every election since 1956.

With all jurisdictions reporting complete but unofficial results, McCain led Obama by 3,632 votes Wednesday out of more than 2.9 million cast _ a margin of 0.12 percentage points.

Both men spent considerable resources trying to win Missouri, a state that Obama ultimately did not need for his national victory.

Obama won 365 electoral votes. Missouri's 11 electoral votes will give McCain 173.

Can't someone with as much money as he has go to the dentist and get his teeth whitened?

Bummer! At least my county (Boone) went on the right side of history. If MO can elect a Democratic governor by at least an 18 percent margin, we should have easily given Barack our 11 EVs. Inexcusable. My state DESERVES to lose it's beloved bellwether status.
Thank goodness our next president didn't need our redneck state.

BN2112: You must have been listening to the local media too much. I live in St Louis. It is what it is, we voted for McCain, get over it. What is more sad is the hate that continues to spew out of the mouths of left wing liberals such as yourself. I wish the new president all of the luck, he is going to need it, with the mess he has to preside over now, such as giving the big 3 billions when they can't be bothered to take a commercial flight to beg for money, AIG, Freddie, Fannie, et al... how about focusing your energy on something positive, besides the hate that you seem to enjoy ?

You must not have visited any right-wing sites lately. They not only don't want to "spread the wealth," they don't seem to keep on spreading the love, either.

A right-winger complaining about hate speech from the left???

Has the world turned upside down?

BN2112 - you've drunk too much of the kool-aid.

Your response to BN2112 is a lot more hateful than his/her post.

Hey Mark, as you know, the vast majority "we" in St. Louis voted for Obama, as did Kansas City and Columbia, the "we" that always goes democratic. This time around more of the rest of the state leaned in "our" direction. I'm shocked it was so close. I grew up in ruby red Southwest Missouri where people are proud to be rednecks and would just laugh off BN2112's remarks - I doubt they would see them as hateful. All of that to say, it was very close - I don't think "left wing liberals" or right wing conservatives either one have a tight hold on our State. To use your parlance, we are what we are. And right now we're looking pretty purple.

markstl3828,i didn't see any hate in the post, maybe you are overly sensitive. And really, can't conservatives grow up a little and get past labeling everyone they disagree with as 'left wing liberals'? I voted for Obama, and I grew up on Army posts, served in the Army, have a business degree, am self employed. If the conservatives had anything more than rhetoric, such as knee jerk charges of 'left-wing liberals" I would in any normal world be a conservative myself.

R E A L L Y bad picture of John McCain.

I know a lot of older people don't opt for the blinding white teeth whiteners of today (that makes those in the public eye look oh-so-photogenic, or eerily like the David Schwimmer character, Ross Geller on that episode of "Friends" where his teeth glowed in the dark).

But, really, did you guys HAVE to use THAT picture?

Instead of spending $150K on clothing Palin..maybe he should have got his teeth fixed..

Well, SOME parts of the state voted for Obama. Can we split up like Nebraska?

Yes, that is one option. Anyway, so much for trying to use the same tired old measuring sticks to predict this race. It was always as NO Other in History from beginning to end.

Well that was certainly disturbing. When is our justice system going to become fair? ALL interrogations, especially with a child, should be videotaped, and ALL interrogations with a child should have an advocate there for the child.

Why is John McCain's teeth are yellow? With all the money he has, can't he go to a good dentist and clean that thing?

Good for Sen Mc cain. Even though he said some things I didn't agree with during the campaign, for some reason I don't have the same dislike for him that I have for Hillary.

I consumed two bottles of Dom(1996) and stayed up until 3:00 to celebrate the election results. Then I proposed a toast to all my racist friends. Enjoy the next eight years knowing that your president is an African-American who will change the supreme court for your lifetime. Smart and thoughtful works.

Sorry, Missouri, that you had to be the booby prize.

This has to be the very definition of a Pyrrhic victory.
