Obama Surprises Biden With Cupcakes (UPDATED WITH PICTURES)

WASHINGTON -- What does an accomplished man of the world get for his 66th birthday?

Well, President-elect Barack Obama already gave Joe Biden the vice presidency. So, for his birthday, Obama gave Biden two ball caps and a rendition of the birthday song.

Biden's birthday is Thursday, but Obama surprised his No. 2 after their weekly lunch Wednesday at the transition office in Chicago. According to staff, Obama presented Biden _ a Delaware senator with decades of foreign policy experience _ with a dozen cupcakes decorated with candles and teased, "You're 12 years old!"

Staff reported that Biden, ever astute in the art of politics, laughed at the his boss's joke. He responded: "Maybe in dog years!"

Obama led the rest of the staff in song, then handed over some Chicago-themed gifts: a White Sox cap, a Bears cap and a bucket of Garrett's popcorn, a hometown favorite.

Wow! Garrett's popcorn is awesome! It's a huge deal here in Chicago; especially the cheese popcorn.

I'd give my give almost anything for a tub of Garrett's popcorn, it's the best!

It's also a lot easier to carry around a tub of popcorn than a Chicago deep-dish pizza. And once the tub is (sadly) empty, Biden can use it as a round receptacle into which he can throw Cheney's executive orders.

One thing to remember about those kinds of posters:
Websites are rated on the number of "clicks" - basically, how many people visit the site (I work for an internet company). Recent ratings put Huffington Post in the top 100 visited websites.

So these posters, annoying as they may be, are actually improving the ratings of Huffington Post, which is a delicious bit of irony.

What I like most about this story?
Its dorkiness, lack of tact, its authenticity.
Nobody has all the answers. President -elect Obama probably didn't know when he woke up this morning that Joe Biden (HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JOE, I'VE ADORED YOU FOR YEARS) was going to have a birthday on November 20th.
And yet, he pulled a highly imperfect celebration together, with humor.
I've counted on generosity of spirit on the part of others more times than I can say, when I've screwed up.
