Winona Ryder Hospitalized In UK

LONDON — Winona Ryder was briefly hospitalized after falling ill on a flight to London's Heathrow Airport on Wednesday, her publicist said. Mara Buxbaum said the 37-year-old actress was taken to a west London hospital "as a precaution" and had been released.

"She's fine now," Buxbaum said. She declined to go into details of Ryder's illness.

British Airways said a flight from Los Angeles to Heathrow requested priority landing after a female passenger "required medical attention" and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

"Our cabin crew looked after the female passenger as much as they could onboard and our passenger services staff also accompanied her to the local hospital," the statement said. "We wish her well."

Ryder, who began her film career as a teenager in 1986, earned back-to-back Oscar nominations in the 1990s for "Little Women" and the "The Age of Innocence." She's also known for youthful roles in films including "Heathers," "Edward Scissorhands" and "Girl, Interrupted. She has mostly stayed out of the headlines after her 2002 conviction for stealing several thousand dollars worth of merchandise from a Saks Fifth Avenue store in Beverly Hills, Calif.

Ryder had prescription drugs in her possession when she was arrested _ but a drug charge was dropped after a doctor said he had prescribed the medication. A probation report stemming from the shoplifting incident showed that Ryder had dozens of prescriptions filled by 20 doctors over three years.

I thought she was really good in Mr. Deeds. Granted it was not the best movie but I really liked her in that movie. Thought she looked great.

I'm looking forward to seeing her in the new Star Trek where she plays the mother of Spock.

She was wonderful in A Scanner Darkly. Flying can be difficult for people who are sensitive to discomfort. I'm sure she tried her best not to feel sick, but what can you do, life happens.

I don't believe you wish her anything because it didn't come out first, it was job position to let us know you know more then we do and why, because you have worked and still work for the famous people.

Winona Ryder is an intelligent person and a brilliant actress who has struggled with depression and other mental problems throughout her life. She has, indeed, been around drugs her whole life (Timothy Leary was her godfather -- hardly her fault) but has never been accused of any addiction to illegal substances. In spite of her very early success as a child/teen actress, she has accumulated a very impressive resume, having worked with the best directors in film and has been nominated for an Academy Award twice. She lives very quietly in San Francisco, has continued to work following her conviction for shop lifting, contributes time and money to charity, and in recent years has done nothing to try to attract publicity. She continues to be a productive citizen in spite of life issues that I'd bet many of us would have a problem overcoming. So let's not have too many snide comments, people. She got sick on a plane.

Yes, I always got the impression that her life went from one extreme to another - from iconic teen, successful actress, and Johnny Depp's girlfriend and then, Puffh...no­thing, except for a charge of cleptomania and now this.

I feel sorry for her - she seems vulnerable.
