Washington Post:

The CIA repeatedly misled Congress and the Justice Department in their investigations of the 2001 shoot-down of a Peruvian plane carrying U.S. missionaries, according to findings of an internal CIA probe released today by congressional officials.

The agency's inspector general concluded that CIA officers in Peru consistently ignored rules of engagement in connection with the downing of at least 10 aircraft suspected of carrying narcotics over the South American country. Yet, CIA managers covered up the problems and knowingly gave false accounts to government officials investigating whether agency employees committed crimes.

Excerpts of the inspector general's report were released by Rep. Peter Hoekstra (Mich.), the ranking Republican on the House intelligence committee. He called today for a new criminal inquiry, as well as congressional hearings, into what he described as a "startling" attempted coverup by the spy agency.

How many government does the USA have?

If the USA doesnt have to report neigther to the white House or to congress.

I think its time, people start voting on who heads the CIA.They have to be made accountable to the public as well.

It's high time that the CIA was thoroughly purged, that competent, intelligent and objective operatives are routinely selected for this organisation and, most importantly, that it works in the genuine best interests of the United States and, de facto, the rest of the world, which invariably comes off the worst as a consequence of the criminal and/or bumbling activities of the CIA. Citing national security doesn't hold any longer and is an untenable as keeping a known, predatory paedophile priest or cardinal in office simply because the Roman Catholic church is supposed to be a "moral" and "religious" body. It was the dodgy reports of the CIA acting not on behalf of the American people but the neo-cons in the Bush/Cheney administration that plunged the USA into the Iraq war. The same is also true of Vietnam and many other war theatres the US unnecessarily found itself in with the abysmal consequences for all concerned that followed. And now is an excellent time for a President-Elect with a genuine and impressive mandate from the American voters for his policies to put his foot down and radically transform the CIA.

Professor Dr. Stanley Collymore.

Dr. C,
Couldn't agree with you more. With very little work, one can research all the trouble this organization has caused in the last say, 15 or 20 years. Its astounding. (see the BOOK version, Charlie Wilson's War)

Near as I can tell tho, the congressional committees that are supposed to do oversight are totally clueless, at best, and complicit at worst. The housecleaning would have to start in the halls of congress.

Thanks for your thoughtful post.

This indicates a consistent alignment with the administration, that has been widespread and unscrupulous. Every case those managers have touched should be examined for the same lack of professionalism, in fact, criminal manipulation.

I am so sick of the crimes committed by this country under the Bush/Cheney regime. I am horribly afraid that the Obama administration will not see to it that all those wrong-wing thieves, murderers and profiteers are held accountable for their incredible multitude of crimes.

well, I hate to pop your bubble, but I work for a county hospital and the ongoing/constantly changing top management make these guys seem like hello kitty.

think about that one, as the economy sours and the folks with insurance lose it and have to use county facilities for their healthcare. BUT the quality reports look great on paper!!!!!

Greed is greed.

"Startling": Republican spin-speak.

No one, including this guy, is actually startled.

I would think that shooting down a plane full of missionaries is going to look pretty bad on your permanent record.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:17 PM on 11/20/2008

Not quite if on Bush or Cheney's records it would be a long way down on the list of crimes.

Record? What record?
I don't seem to be able to find any reference to that in any records at our disposal.

This is old news. Read about it in the L.A.Times back in 2001. Anybody with half a brain who read the article knew who pulled the trigger.
