Washington Post:

The CIA repeatedly misled Congress and the Justice Department in their investigations of the 2001 shoot-down of a Peruvian plane carrying U.S. missionaries, according to findings of an internal CIA probe released today by congressional officials.

The agency's inspector general concluded that CIA officers in Peru consistently ignored rules of engagement in connection with the downing of at least 10 aircraft suspected of carrying narcotics over the South American country. Yet, CIA managers covered up the problems and knowingly gave false accounts to government officials investigating whether agency employees committed crimes.

Excerpts of the inspector general's report were released by Rep. Peter Hoekstra (Mich.), the ranking Republican on the House intelligence committee. He called today for a new criminal inquiry, as well as congressional hearings, into what he described as a "startling" attempted coverup by the spy agency.

It is shocking! Well, sadly, it's not. . .

The CIA has never been there to gather facts.

Their sole mission was to manufacture reasons to get the congress to do what ever the few who created it wants. The CIA is never interested in facts.

Just look back to how it came in to existence.

Um...did anyone else read this and just kinda.....smile ?

I mean, the irony is just precious.

The CIA under a christian fundamentalist administration shoots down a plane of missonaries on their way to the Peruvian interior in order to convert the indigenous people from their beliefs and religions to christianity.

C'mon...that's just kinda funny.....

Coming from a gay Atheist American, I have to say NO!!!!! It is NOT funny whatsoever. It is despicable. Even after what the religious nut cases did here in CA, the lies regarding Prop 8, and their false sense of indignation, I still wish no harm upon them. Unfortunately that feeling is not mutual.

The Christian Right will call it casualitys of war. This is the kind of thing that solidifies thier support. Of coarse they will continue to deny the CIA had anything to do with it.

A whole bunch of them starting with gw bush and going on down the line should be tried for high crimes and treason after the first of next year and then turned over to the world court and tried for war crimes.

I agree - this is reprehensible and condoned by the Bush administration.

I'm against capital punishment, except for these mfers. After we legally perform it after going through the courts, we should hand them over to the Hague and let them do it again.

Over the past 5 years, Americans have slowly grown to accept that the Bush Administration operates on two levels: the one we hear about on the evening news vs. the real one. It may be another 30 years before the history books correct the record. For now, when reading any news about upper South America, place it into this context: THIS AREA IS STRATEGIC TO U.S. OIL INTERESTS.

President Alvaro Uribe is the leader of Colombia's U.S.-run puppet regime. The surrounding countries (Ecuador, Venezuela and Peru), along with workers & the poor of Colombia (who are subjected to systematic oppression & tyranny) have resisted the Uribe regime. Bush calls these resisters guerillas, 'terrorists,' and 'terrorist appeasers,' -- similar to the insurgents in Iraq, who also see themselves as patriotically fighting against the violent U.S. invasion & occupation of their country.

Since Congress would not openly approve sending U.S. troops to fight in South America, the Bush Administration instead sends private mercenary armies, such as Blackwater and DynCorp (with employees from the latter being responsible for the shooting-down of the Peruvian plane full of missionaries). Of significance is that these same U.S. forces are part of a powerful South American drug cartel, similar to the opium trade in Afghanistan (which the Taliban had all but eradicated before our arrival there in 2001). But that's another story. For the full story, you'd have to suspend incredulity and google of the above-mentioned terms.

They told us they can also read a licence place from space! Yeah right!!! If that were true they also would have already gotten OBL. The real purpose for those satellites is to gather up space particles that Zsa Zsa Gabor can plaster on her face and in 10 years she'll look like 35 again!

Back around, say, 1968, spy satellites could identify the type of magazine a bunch of Russian workers standing outside a missile factory were reading. Hoping for a peek at blueprints, the spy satellite instead revealed they were looking at the Communist equivalent of Playboy.

In the 40 years since then the optics have probably improved a bit. (Assuming the photo analysts read the articles and don't just look at the pictures)

You tell the spooks when and where OBL will be standing and I'm sure they can give you a clear picture of the top of his head. Searching, however, for OBL among 20 million guys wearing turbans might take a little longer.

After everything that has happened, we should begin to question who really is to blame for September 11.

the article fails to point out the overlooked risk of innocent bystanders getting hit by all those drug planes that were shot down somewhat analogous to highspeed police pursuits

the war against drugs that multibillion dollar fiasco foreshadowed the invasion of iraq

In Republicanland there is no such term as 'innocent bystanders'! They are either 'collateral damage' or 'liberated'

I love it when they act all surprised! hahaha how hilarious ! The politician with the best act of 'aghast' will be nominated for an Academy Award.

The only noteworthy thing about this is,that it is even reported. Normally such things are quietly tucked under the rug.
