Dean Lamont is a professional fishing guide, plying the waters around Cape Lookout. Depending upon the season and local conditions, Lamont guides anglers to red drum, speckled trout, false albacore -- whatever species presents the best opportunity.

He can add Labrador retriever to the list.

This story made me incredibly angry. Why would you leave your dog unattended like that? Poor Jake. I'm really happy he was found and safe at home now.

i don't let my beloved animals out of my sight for a second, unless i know they are safe at home and well cared for. i pity this poor dog. his owners don't deserve him.

The photo must be of some other dog ... doesn't look like a yellow lab to me.

I thought so too. He looks more like a wet golden retriever mix.

Regardless, I'm glad the soggy boy is safe. I hope they check out his owners though to make sure he's safe with them. It was a strange accident and most dog lovers wouldn't leave their dog unattended that way. Maybe they were just not thinking that day.

I don't believe that a dog is going to jump into open sea without encouragement from a human. That may have happened, and then they left the dog. Or the dog fell in or was pushed in. Otherwise, a dog is not going to be that stupid. The reluctance of the dog to climb up in the rescuers boat even though it was too exhausted to even stand, is also suspicious. Growling while you're in the sea? That's an indication he has experienced mistreatment by people on his owners boat. Then when the owners get him back, they seem very unconcerned. If you ask me, someone got drunk and threw the dog in the water. They didn't get him back because at that point he was probably growling like he was with the strangers. So they figured, screw him and boated off. The rescuers should have given the dog to a family to adopt, instead.

"I don't believe that a dog is going to jump into open sea without encouragement from a human."

You believe wrong. My dog would jump in the lake behind our house to chase after ducks and geese, swimming around for an hour or more till we finally had to set off fireworks (which we knew scared the crap out of him) to get him to come to shore.

I wouldn't doubt for a second he would jump off a boat to go after a seagull or pelican or other bird.

Wow, talk about looking for the worst in people. You must be a hoot at a party with that negativity. All assumption with no facts...

"Lamont guessed that they left Jake in one boat while taking the dingy in the shallow marsh water."

That's negligence, plain and simple. These people shouldn't be allowed to own pets. That's what the article should have focused on.

What id.iotic guardians. They shouldn't have an animal.

But they're out there kil.ling animals and watching them d.ie (when they could eat veg), so what's one more animal d.eath to them.

Last time I checked, humans were classified as omnivores. I'm sure what they were going to eat the fish that they caught. Just because hunters eat meat, it doesn't mean they don't show compassion to animals.

Leaving a dog unattended in a boat more than a mile from land undermines your last statement.

Goodness! Just imagine how vast is the sea. How many dogs have not been found swimming a mile from land? And you thought they just ran away...

I first had to chuckle at this headline as I recalled some labs I have met. Here is a rule if you meet a lab at the water's edge: Don't throw a stick out into the water unless you want to throw it all day long. Labs love sticks and they don't mind swimming. So, at first I thought some fool threw a stick. Of course, I am glad the pooch is OK.

I simply do not believe in taking your pets out to sea under any circumstances. Having lived in Hawaii and seen them fall overboard all to often it shouldn't be done.

Besides suppose something long and with a large top fin had come by....
