Katie Couric discussed her infamous interview with Sarah Palin Wednesday night on the "Late Show with David Letterman." Couric took Letterman inside the process of scheduling Palin's interviews — the campaign actually rushed an interview because "they didn't want a week to go by without hearing anything from Governor Palin," as Couric put it — and said the campaign was "very generous" and gave her "tremendous access" to Palin.

Couric said that Palin may have gotten tripped up because she was not prepared to answer more general questions during their interview following her visit to the UN.

"I started by asking her who most impressed her as Vice President and why, what was the best and worst things Dick Cheney had done as Vice President, why was Roe v. Wade an ill-conceived or a bad Supreme Court decision," Couric told Letterman. "And I think she really hadn't anticipated those kinds of questions, so I think it might've thrown her off a bit. And then we got into foreign policy — because, after all, she was at the UN meeting with world leaders — and clearly she was struggling with some of those answers."

While Couric did note that, in Palin's defense, they were not easy questions to answer, Letterman reminded her that the "What newspapers and magazines do you read?" question was an easy one that Palin blew. Couric explained how it came about and said that she disagrees with the way Palin is characterizing the question in post-election interviews.

"We we doing one of these walk-and-talks, it was a casual part of the interview, and I just said, 'I'm curious, what do you read? What has helped you shape your worldview? What do you read to stay informed?'" Couric explained.

"A good question but an easy question," Letterman said.

"It was just really something I was curious about," Couric said, "and I'm not sure whether she was afraid to offend certain people, if she would offend conservatives by saying she read the New York Times....Even in the post-election interviews, Dave, that she's done, nobody's really asked her, 'Why didn't you answer that question?' She claims that I said, 'What do you read up there in Alaska?' as if people in Alaska don't read or don't have access to reading materials. I never said that. I'm aware people in Alaska have access."

Couric also shared one question she asked both Palin and Biden that didn't air — what they missed most on the campaign trail. Palin missed running every day, while Biden missed being Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Watch:

During Palin's sit-down with Couric's former-co-host Matt Lauer on the "Today" show, she said that she was annoyed by Couric's "What do you read?" question because it was insulting to Alaskans:

LAUER: But you didn't think the (Katie Couric) interview was unfair? I mean, the questions were fairly straightforward, weren't they?

PALIN: Sure. Yeah. But, you know, questions about, well, you know, "What do you read up there in Alaska?" To me that was a little bit annoying. Because I'm like, what do you mean, what do I read in Alaska? I read the same things that you guys read in New York -- and there in LA and in Washington state. What do you mean what I read up there? But anyway, just-- just some annoyance, that certainly I'm sure showed through.

Lets face it people, Sarah's best asset is that she can make genocide sound folksy.

My question is this, she lost, why do we even care anymore?

Palin is just the culmination - or the most recent culmination - of the Republican's hope and strategy that people are dumbed down enough to swallow what they are serving up.

Oddly, when you examine Palin's replies and stances on issues - when she doesn't have a script - she really isn't that doctrinaire, except on abortion. She may feed red meat to her rabid crowds, but is quite conciliatory when she has to deal with press, and hardly seems extreme at all. On the other hand she has no coherent political philosophy basically and therefore can't fall back on the glib "talking points" other politicians rely on.
Being more ignorant of issues, events and the world as a whole than any other politician that has appeared on the national stage doesn't help her contend with media attention and inquiry either.
This is why she seems to sink into utter confusion in interviews and at the governor's conference.

The key to understanding Palin is to realize that above all she wants to appear "adorable". Hence the You Betchas, the winking, the constant glittering generalities about "this great nation" , references to her kids, the homey speech and plastic smile.
And she is so dumb she obtusely persists in her schtick while turkeys are gleefully slaughtered in full view in her press releases.
So finally The Dumbing Down of America really produced what her supporters deserve - not some calculationg, manipulative Rightwing Demagogue, but someone as dumb as they are.

All this talk about Palin, humm, Obama has done nothing for the last two years, oh, lie low. And vote "present." You want to talk about some one who has dodged all the bullets, its him. Palin didn't have two years to scheme, manipulate, and practice in the mirror. Its seems 143 days qualifies him? HUMM.

Katie's ratings speak for themselves. Letterman should stay with comedy and not politics.
P.S. If that face gets one more lift she will need cloths pins behind her ears.

That comment with the CAPS LOCK on was a joke, right?

Thank goodness for Katy Couric who exposed Palin for what she is, rather, what she isn't!
11:35 AM on 11/22/2008
KATIE IS A JOKE. HE RATINGS WER LOW UNTIL GOV PALIN. SHE SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF HERSELF FOR USING PALIN. THE LETTERMAN SHOW WAS A DISASTER AND LETTERMAN SHOULD BE FINED BY FCC FOR MAKING HIS SEXUAL STATEMENT AND KATIE HAD A BIG LAUGH OVER IT. THEY BOTH SHOPULD BE TAKEN OFF THE AIR.
12:05 PM on 11/22/2008
Katie is under rated maybe, but she isn't a joke. And she should be considered a national hero for exposing Palin (without even really trying). The question about "what you read" and the "walk and talks" are meant to relax the person being interviewed -- to make it easier. And Palin just proved how unqualified she is. She proved she has zero intellectual curiosity. She proved how lucky we are that McCain lost.
02:40 PM on 11/22/2008
Using Palin? Please. Palin agreed to do an interview. That's what it was. During an interview the person being interviewed gets asked questions. Since Palin wanted to be VP it was appropriate for her to be asked questions about the job. She couldn't answer them. That's no Katie's fault.

Gov. Sarah Palin will be President of USA soon.
We, the people of America, love Gov. Sarah Palin.
God bless you, Sarah!

I loved Katie on Today, and realize how terribly she has been homogenized as CBS Anchor. Her feistiness has been almost eradicated. She cannot express a negative opinion because that is not good journalism. In neutralizing Katie, they killed her spirit. I would love to hear her real opinion of that strumpet Palin. And I would love to see Katie get her own news program without the constraints of BROADCASTING CODES. David looks old, and heavy. His face has taken on the look of a senior citizen and his youthful air has vanished. Time to go. He is becoming slow, pontifical, and he barely looked at Katie who was scrunched in that awful chair having to look up at the ridiculously perched Grand Poohbah Letterman. What a lousy set.

Her rating was so low that if NBC wouldn ' have had 25 Mills invested in her, they would have fired her, now since she trashed Palin and played the got cha....she became somewhat famous......or infamous...........give me a break, if I had to put other people down to get my share, I rather have nothing....

Oh yeah! "What do you read " is a real gotcha question. What is wrong with you people that think this women is smart. Have you even read any of her answers to questions? Try it sometime. When you are done, you will be asking yourself "what the h-ll is she talking about? This women is worst than Bush putting a sentence together. Her slang is not cute or funny; it just maker her look and sound even dumber than she is.

If nothing else she is great entertainment value, almost as funny as Tina Fey without realizing it.
As for running in 2012, I think the Republican party either have no shame or no sense.
To be fair four years is probably enough time to "groom" her, but as she has proved on more than one occasion she is more than capable of drifting off target. In fact she she doesn't just drift off target she misses it completely.
A real bonus out of all of this circus is the fact that we can all sleep soundly at night, Sarah is keeping an eye on Russia.... I wonder if Putin is aware?

You know, most of us would be glad to stop taking diggs at Sarah Palin. You don't notice much said about McCain, do you? But Ms Sarah just keeps doing interview after interview now. It is a wonder that she has any time to do any governing with her busy press schedule of 2012 Interviews....
I think most of us would give her the benefit of the doubt if she would just shut up for a couple of years - read a few good books and bone up on the constitution and foreign policy.
