Katie Couric David Letterman

Katie Couric discussed her infamous interview with Sarah Palin Wednesday night on the "Late Show with David Letterman." Couric took Letterman inside the process of scheduling Palin's interviews — the campaign actually rushed an interview because "they didn't want a week to go by without hearing anything from Governor Palin," as Couric put it — and said the campaign was "very generous" and gave her "tremendous access" to Palin.

Couric said that Palin may have gotten tripped up because she was not prepared to answer more general questions during their interview following her visit to the UN.

"I started by asking her who most impressed her as Vice President and why, what was the best and worst things Dick Cheney had done as Vice President, why was Roe v. Wade an ill-conceived or a bad Supreme Court decision," Couric told Letterman. "And I think she really hadn't anticipated those kinds of questions, so I think it might've thrown her off a bit. And then we got into foreign policy — because, after all, she was at the UN meeting with world leaders — and clearly she was struggling with some of those answers."

While Couric did note that, in Palin's defense, they were not easy questions to answer, Letterman reminded her that the "What newspapers and magazines do you read?" question was an easy one that Palin blew. Couric explained how it came about and said that she disagrees with the way Palin is characterizing the question in post-election interviews.

"We we doing one of these walk-and-talks, it was a casual part of the interview, and I just said, 'I'm curious, what do you read? What has helped you shape your worldview? What do you read to stay informed?'" Couric explained.

"A good question but an easy question," Letterman said.

"It was just really something I was curious about," Couric said, "and I'm not sure whether she was afraid to offend certain people, if she would offend conservatives by saying she read the New York Times....Even in the post-election interviews, Dave, that she's done, nobody's really asked her, 'Why didn't you answer that question?' She claims that I said, 'What do you read up there in Alaska?' as if people in Alaska don't read or don't have access to reading materials. I never said that. I'm aware people in Alaska have access."

Couric also shared one question she asked both Palin and Biden that didn't air — what they missed most on the campaign trail. Palin missed running every day, while Biden missed being Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Watch:

During Palin's sit-down with Couric's former-co-host Matt Lauer on the "Today" show, she said that she was annoyed by Couric's "What do you read?" question because it was insulting to Alaskans:

LAUER: But you didn't think the (Katie Couric) interview was unfair? I mean, the questions were fairly straightforward, weren't they?

PALIN: Sure. Yeah. But, you know, questions about, well, you know, "What do you read up there in Alaska?" To me that was a little bit annoying. Because I'm like, what do you mean, what do I read in Alaska? I read the same things that you guys read in New York -- and there in LA and in Washington state. What do you mean what I read up there? But anyway, just-- just some annoyance, that certainly I'm sure showed through.

Did anyone else find it absolutely bizarre that Couric and Dave agreed that Palin was very "generous with her time" in agreeing to Couric's interview? These candidates are spending millions of dollars to buy TV time, but when Palin agrees to go on TV FOR FREE she's being generous? If that's not a sign that something's seriously wrong with your candidate, I don't know what is. I mean, I'm sure Kucinich or Gravel would have been a virtual Bill Gates with their time if any of the networks gave them the time of day during the primaries.

Thank you for mentioning Kucinich. He was treated with such undeserved disrespect during the primaries.

Kucinich is the Democrat candidate I was cheering for. I did vote for Obama, but I thought Kucinich should have made it a lot further than he did. The media utterly disrespected him. From the beginning, it was Hillary's race to lose. Along with Edwards and Obama, they was the media annointed Democratic choices. Ron Paul was the only Republican candidate I would vote for. We all saw how much disrespect he recieved.

Katie Couric is a graduate of one of the finest public universities in the country: University of Virginia (my son's alma mater), founded by Thomas Jefferson. Palin is a roundabout grad of U. of Idaho. No comparison here. Couric is no lightweight; she's sharp as a tack and pretty too. She brilliantly exposed Palin's utter ignorance on important issues and showed her for what she was: an unqualified candidate, a governor of an outpost, wilderness state with a lot of land and few people. Kudos to Couric! She rates Number One in my book!!

I agree with you. She had to walk a tightrope, because she couldn't seem like she was beating up on her, but she couldn't let stuff slide, either. In the end, she was the best person for the job because when Palin inevitably complained about Katie Couric, it came across as the petty whining of a sore loser. And I think peoples' general low expectations of Couric ended up helping to knock Palin down several pegs because the tired old excuses of the "media elite" attacking a conservative didn't work. Scrappy, Katie Couric, behind in the ratings, the widow/single mom of two kids, isn't the face of the "media elite."

When I was finished watching those interviews, I definitely would've felt more secure with Couric on the ticket rather than Palin.

It's amazing. The election is over yet the media cannot get enough digs in on Palin and McCain. Hey folks! You won! You got your guy elected! Congratulations! Now get off the kick Republicans-McCain-Palin bandwagon and go do that non-biased journalism thing. You do remember how to do that, don't you??

With all the talk of Palin being a candidate in 2012, it's our patriotic duty to keep ex*posing her for what she is -- unqualified, ig*norant, intellectually challenged.

This is a blog and these are comments. Just in case you didn't know this isn't non-biased journalism. We all get to say what we think.

No one is talking about McCain these days. We talk about Palin because she is on the news almost everyday. That's fine. She thinks she is going to be the Republican nominee. I am sure there are some other Rep that would also like the job, so she'll have to fight them for it. I can't imagine seeing her go up against them in a years worth of debates, interviews and press conferences. She probably needs to start studying now. Those other Reps have a huge headstart in the knowledge category.

Did Katie mention her interview with Joe Biden? When he stated that FDR was the POTUS when the market crashed in 1929 and he got on TV? Both statements were very wrong. Did she mention that. This man who is supposed to be so smart and has been in Washington for 4 decades and ran for POTUS twice is allowed to make mistakes. I won't list all his gaffes. But a governor new to the national stage isn't allowed a mistake or two. What hypocrites.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:41 AM on 11/21/2008

Don't be silly. Joe Biden occasionally says stupid things and underneath it has a proven, well documented grasp of issues and policy. Sarah Palin rarely says anything other than stupid things and underneath it has less than a kindergartener's understanding of issues and policy. She made a complete horse's ass of herself on the international stage--one really has to work hard to be that ignorant around the clock.

There is a difference between making an honest mistake when you're being interviewed and having no clue what you're doing. Obama said something about traveling to the 57 states...that was a mistake. Palin claiming that seeing Russia from her backyard gave her foreign policy credentials is a different matter all together.

You're right, everyone makes mistakes, and she made one big one- accepting a spot on the ticket. She was completely out of her league. Hopefully Alaskans will have learned enough about her to vote her out and her celebrity status will fade in the coming years.

Joe the plumber, on the other hand, he's just getting started. Hello, book deal! [vomit]

Biden is known for his slip-ups.He is also known for his smarts and his effective service to our country. There's a difference between a slip-up and shear ignorance. Palin had the opportunity of a life time to show the world her stuff on the Couric interview. She even got a throw-a-way question. She failed miserably. She threw it away!! This woman touted all her fantastic qualifications and experience. But she couldn't think on her feet? Talk about over reaching!! Palin's a big girl. She wanted to play in the big political game. It's ridiculous to coddle anyone 's inability to express themselves when they stood to become the next VP . It's obscene to make excuses for her and her ignorance. Biden might trip over his tongue sometimes. But Palin 's tongue just knocks her flat on her face. You need to take Dramamine before listening to her speak. Leave Joe alone, Palin can speak for herself... just barely.

Couric was extremely instrumental in turning the election around after exposing Palin for the first time as as absolute idiot. Couric probably deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for the revealing interview.

Katie is a completely capable interviewer. She did it for umpteen years, after all. And for those who can't fathom why she's "backing down," she wants interviews with conservatives in the future.. No interviewer on TV (even Hannity) wants to be seen as a wingnut, left or right. Hannity has to lie to say he's "fair and balanced," because nobody wants to listen to an avowed partisan, even when they are.

Also, may I say this? Katie is the one news anchor who makes me aroused.

If McCain had picked a male running mate - say, Sam Palin - who said the things Sarah Palin said in public, the press and the Dems would have descended on Sam like a pack of ravening wolves and torn him to shreds. Sam would have been laughed off the stage of history. It is only because Palin is a woman that that hasn't already happened to her, and any woman who defends Palin because she thinks Palin is the victim of sexism should be ashamed of herself. Palin is not a victim of sexism; she is its beneficiary.

And so should you. Everytime any one said something against her, McCain screamed sexist. He set the bar on Palin, which made it hard to ask her anything after that.

It was important to expose her as uninformed and not very intelligent for the safety of this country lest McCain got elected. Journalist were just doing their JOB.

You're kidding right?! When McCain put her on the ticket, no one knew anything about her. Most had never even heard her name before. Then, the McCain campaign made a decision to withhold information about Palin and keep her from doing interviews. If you don't think for one minute that wasn't going to cause the media and the public (dems, independents and republicans alike) to become ravenous for information on her, you are naive. She was being nominated for VP -- we had the right to know about her, her position on issues, her record as governor, how she would handle things as a VP, what she understands about foreign policy, national security, etc.

Sarah Palin, and only Sarah Palin, is responsible for what came out of her mouth. She sounded uneducated, ill-informed, and inexperienced. Why? Maybe because she is. If she had so much more experience than Obama, then why did his numerous media interviews go fine, why was he able to answer questions directly, why did he have command of the issues, and why did he win all three debates?! She had "more experience" so therefore, she should have performed better.

Please. You people that defend Palin make me laugh. Obama was held up to much more scrutiny, his background picked through ad nauseum and the media, GOP and republican supporters attacked him like a ravenous pack of wolves. He held up. She did not. There's a reason for that.

How utterly vapid must one be to discuss politics with Katie Couric and come off as the dumb one?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:55 AM on 11/21/2008

Couric seems to be doing a bit of a backdown on Palin now, and I have to wonder- why? All this BS about Palins future is just crazy mad spinning, why does the press care about any future Palin good will?
Ms Couric did an excellent 12th grader level interview, and Palin showed her stuff; an undereducated uninformed nitwit who was in way, way over her head. The GOP needs to gather up the shreds of its self and find an educated capable leader- if they want a woman there's plenty of better choices out there. Even better looking ones.
But Karl Rove may have killed this party off. Sarah has replaced Paris Hilton on ET, making her kind of a stretch as a respectable political figure.
Oh- she reads USA Today. Caught it on tape by the pool at the GOP Governors conference. (snicker) And she had an $1,800 Balenciaga bag of the season bought by... the campaign? Sent by Balenciaga PR? It didn't come from any resale store.
