Kristol

Bill Kristol defended yet again of the choice of Sarah Palin as McCain's Vice President during a breakfast conference on Thursday. But the prominent neoconservative pundit and Weekly Standard editor did make one small concession: had John McCain tapped Sen. Joseph Lieberman for his number-two post, the results could have been just as good, if not better for the GOP ticket.

Speaking at a National Journal 2008 campaign retrospective event, Kristol argued that had the Connecticut Independent been the Republican vice presidential nominee, McCain would have lost "20 percent of the vote at the convention," staff would have "left the campaign," there would have been protests on the convention floor, and the news media would have been obsessed with the inter-party friction for a solid month.

Nevertheless, he added, "I think it could have been managed and it could have ended up net-net by the time of the election. But that is a very tough choice to make in real time..."

Kristol had, in fact, made the suggestion that McCain choose Lieberman as his VP in the period leading up to the convention. But he is best known as one of the media's most vocal Palin cheerleaders, once urging McCain to fire his entire campaign staff in part for mishandling the Alaska Governor.

During the event Kristol debated the notion -- put forward by Democratic Pollster Stan Greenberg and confirmed by most empirical data -- that Palin was a drag on the Republican ticket. He acknowledged that the governor lost McCain some votes, "mostly blue state swing voters," but added that she gave McCain "at least a shot of getting the Electoral College votes he needed in states like Ohio."

Speaking earlier, Greenberg noted that in nearly every poll he had examined the top reason for voting against McCain was his choice of Palin. He argued that another choice, like Tim Pawlenty or Mitt Romney, would have made the election closer.

"I was very nervous about this election going into the Democratic convention when they were focused on national security and safety issues. Had they kept those core ideas... through the economic crisis, they would have been much stronger," Greenberg explained. "But they gave up experience, they lost fundamental points by choosing her."

McCain's pollster, Bill McInturf, was the last to speak and took umbrage with Greenberg's analysis. Arguing that Palin brought important features to the campaign -- enthusiasm and money, primarily -- he echoed Kristol in saying there would have absolutely been a crisis on the convention floor had McCain chosen Lieberman.

"Do you want to spend three to six weeks after this convention talking about the Republican Party or moving on," McInturf said he told McCain. "My point in the room was that it would be at least three straight weeks of discussion on the Republican coalition."

All of the panelists, including Democratic strategist Ruy Teixeira, said Palin would be a major player for the Republican presidential nominee in 2012.

Kristol is as relevant to anything as Bush is. Bush followed Kristols advice on Iraq and went to war. I think Kristol, Bush, Rove and Cheney should all go to El Ranco Dumbo (Bush's ranch in Texas) and be confined there for life with occasional conjugal visits from Rush Limbaugh, Bill OReilly, and Sean Hannity.

Actually, I think Kristol wants to "handle" the governor of AK himself.

There must be a close family member or friend who can run a "Palin intervention" for this man. How could he not realize that he is so "head over heels" with Palin that he is unable to see the truth.

Not scientific, but a fact--my mother was a HUGE Hillary supporter--donations and rallies--when Hillary lost, she was furious and was going to vote for McCain. Then Palin was introduced under the "guise" of being there for all the Hillary supporters. Over the weekend, my mother learned how Palin's views were diametrically oppossed to Hillary's and my mother was NOT going to vote for anyone. (Yes, I let her have it for even suggesting as much.)

By Monday, my mother had learned of Palin's platform; her lack of education; heard her speak; was offended by the notion that she would vote for her just because she was a woman and was offended by the "oops, we forgot to mention Bristol's pregnancy and tried to hide it with a blanket and now we embrace out of wedlock preganancy"; by that point, my mother was an Obama supporter. Her vote and money went to him.

Not a scientific, just a fact, thanks to Palin, Obama obtained my mother's Latino vote. It is hard for Kristol to admit it though..he loves Palin and so pushed for her to be the VP candidate that he si not about to admit that she was a ridiculous choice.

Can Mr. Kristol inform us which states specifically did Palin help McCain win? Ohio they lost badly since it was supposed to be one of the closest. They lost PA by a lot. They lost NC and IN, not to mention the Lakes states. They lost CO by a good margin where there are a lot of evangelicals. They lost FL. So I am not sure Kristol knows what he is talking about, maybe he is suggesting that McCain wouldn't have won even the darkest red states in the South without Palin. Well, considering that the folks down there are also pretty sexist, I am not sure even that argument stands. McCain could have won there with bigger margins if Palin was not on the ticket.

Republican men look at their women as baby producing machines. Sarah Palin has shown good production figures, Now her daughter is showing a good production capability too.

And the less brains they have, the better.

More brains means more cogent and clear arguments. And Joe the Plumbers do not have the intelligence to counter those arguments!

So Kristol is just the archetypal Republican!

I think it is time for this guy to be ignored. Giving him valuable space and time gives him the feeling of self importance. Time to tune him out.

This man is pathetic. It's obvious he's so enamored with Palin that he can't see beyond her face and into her empty head. His opinion of anything political is absolutely worthless.

What is this man thinking with? It must be the proverbial "Little Head?" I personally do not see the phyical attraction. Her mean spiritedness takes away from any outer beauty she may have. Sarah Palin cannot even form an intelligent complete sentence. She bungles the English language everytime she opens her mouth. She runs her sentences together without end and without meaning,. She smiles and winks and you betcha's ad nauseaum. She unfortunately is not the brightest or the best America has to offer on any front. John Mc Cain must have a hard time sleeping at night knowing he unleashed this moronic woman upon America. So let Kristol continue to defend the Governor, on what I do not know. Even today she appears clueless. Supposedly Alaska loves her flawed as she is. I suggest she return there and attend to the needs of the state and her family. After all she has five children, one with special needs, one who is an unwed pregnant teen, another away at a doomed war, and others who apparently seldom saw her over the past several months.

It is painful to watch Kristol nowadays. He is not a dumb man, and yet he refuses to admit what's wrong and adjust himself accordingly. When he is on The Daily Show, it was obvious that he not only did not believe in what he was saying, but he was embarrassed by himself repeating falsehood. But he persisted nonetheless.

What's with him?

By the way, for those interested in how Kristol became one of Palin's most ardent supporters, the article ("The Insiders") in a recent New Yorker may be interesting:

Wrong again, why even listen to him. He was wrong throughout the election, chose wrong, made incorrect assumptions and incorrect hypotheses...why even bother. Can we now start ignoring neo-cons or at least clown them until they all go away?

A meaningless confab of sore losers, huddling in irrelevancy while the real world moves on. When, I wonder, will they wake up to the fact that no one cares what they think, say or do?
