The chief pollster for John McCain's presidential campaign offered a candid diagnosis of how his candidate was done in, on occasion reserving harsh words for fellow Republicans.

Bill McInturff, speaking at a National Journal breakfast on Thursday, said the political environment for the GOP in 2008 was worse than anything he has seen in his time polling since former Soviet empires were breaking the shackles of communism.

"Reporters would call me up and say, 'have you ever seen this?'" McInturff said of George W. Bush's approval ratings. "And I say, 'yeah, Bulgaria 1992.'"

"We had a very unpopular war and the most unpopular president in American polling history," he explained, by way of summarizing the election. "We had a 70 percent wrong track and we were winning. We were winning. And what happened? We said that's not hard enough for John McCain. We should implode the financial markets. And what happens? We go from 70 percent wrong track to literally 90 percent."

Unrestrained by the formalities of the election, McInturff levied some sharps words at fellow GOPers who -- generally speaking -- never really were bullish on the idea of a McCain presidency. The most biting jabs were saved for communications guru Frank Luntz.

"I saw Frank Luntz," said McInturff, "who is a moron -- I want to make sure this is clearly on the record -- he was talking to Republican governors, making fun of John for not being able to use a BlackBerry. The man can't do it because he is much more disabled than people can imagine... I would like to take a hammer and start breaking bones in Frank's arms."

McInturff later noted that the Obama campaign ran an ad on this very topic, and vice presidential candidate Joe Biden criticized the spot because of its insensitivity.

In addition to going after Luntz, McInturff highlighted several factors that he credited with truly hurting the McCain candidacy. The first, and most obvious, was the crisis in the financial markets and the failure of the House of Representatives to quickly pass a bailout packaged.

"We had the House not voting for the bailout," he said, "which kept that story going for another seven days and helped implode the campaign."

The second was McCain's age, which was a huge handicap in a change election.

"When you have a 70-year-old nominee versus a new generation candidate," he said, "it is very hard."

The final, and most surprising, was the Hispanic vote, which trended heavily towards Obama. McInturff said that the most effective commercial of the campaign was the Spanish-language spot, put up by the now president-elect, which claimed that conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh was a McCain ally on immigration. Mainly, however, Obama had a huge financial advantage that allowed him to make great inroads within this and other minority communities.

"If the other team has 700 million and they are spending five times as much on Spanish language media saying that crap," he said, "it has an effect."

I'm really tired of hearing the lame excuse that John McCain can't operate a computer because of his war injuries.I've seen him on the telephone. Does he have some one dial for him?I've seen him on tv waving, shaking hands and making air quotes. If you have one working finger you can operate a computer. The reason he cannot has nothing to due with war injuries.

McCain lost because of many, many reasons. Palin the stupid evangelical spin to the republicans, their anti-anything that's not an old white guy. They harped on stupid insignificant crap, they race baited, bashed every other religion than evangelical christians, bashed every other race than whites, screamed about some parts of american being good and other places being bad and the last but most important thing was that McCain and Palin were just down right stupid. My 12 year old knows more about how the federal government works than Palin and McCain's answer to everything was I was a Pow. No ideas, no plans, just rude, nasty, jerks, that most people would throw rotten tomatoes at.

This is what scares the heck out of me:

"We had a 70 percent wrong track and we were winning. We were winning."

THEY WERE WINNING.

How was that possible?

Credit the long smear campaign against Obama -- which started with those nasty emails 18 months before the election and just got more vitriolic. You know, saying he's a secret Muslim, and part of a "sleeper cell," and then the nonsense about him "palling around with unrepentant terrorists."

That stuff worked with what we now laughingly call "low-information voters." I still remembered when we called these people morons, but I'm just old fashioned...

I admire your tolerance.

Most folks noticed that the DP candidate was not white.

Welcome to America!

They were only winning for two weeks, with a 2% lead. It's called a post campaign bounce (and a very modest one at that). It was also coupled with fascination (which quickly turned to disgust) with a fresh face. Granted the election would've been much closer if not for complete financial collapse...but McCain was never going to win this thing.

A perfect storm of WRONG.

When you're WRONG ON EVERYTHING you SHOULD lose - truth is McCain SHOULD have lost by AR MORE. Says something about the stupidity of the American electorate....... Bush had a 20% approval rate and McCain STILL managed to get 40% of the votes..... I don't think they stole THAT much (maybe 5% in key areas - enough to affect some congressional races maybe) - so who are the morons - pardon me, morAns - that think Repoublicans represent 'change'?

This is pretty well said. Age was the factor. Republicans new that last go around with Bush - McCain. But there's more, When Palin took the platform at the Governors convention with a bunch of dark suited narcissists behind her led by Perry the stage was set for what's ailing us all. The representation is going to have to reach out to females and Hispanics. Obama is gonna screw the Hispanics, they'll have to see and learn that themselves. But for now the base is related to Palin and the good ole boys need to run with that including encouragement, educating and invitation extended as often as it can. What ever failures you place around her they are the parties failure. Suck it up and lend a hand. The message can get out and the fight can be brought home along family lines , religion, and freedom. With all there hub bub the dems only won by a field goal, we were 3 points away even with all that has gone down and the credit of that has to go up as well as down because of Palin. Family, religion freedom!

The big question is How Did They Possibly Lose?
If you are a racist - you voted Republican
If you are anti-gay - you voted Republican
If you are an evangelist - you voted Republican
If you are anti-immigration - you voted Republican
If you are for the war (any war) - you voted Republican
If you are anti-communist - you voted Republican
If you are anti-abortion - you voted Republican
If you are anti-elitist - you voted Republican
If you believe in trickle-down economics - you voted Republican
If you are anti-socialist - you voted Republican
If you are anti-gun control - you voted Republican
If you are anti-intellectual - you voted Republican
If you are pro-military - you voted Republican
If you are a real Patriot - you voted Republican

So how did a black, un-American, socialist, anti-war, peace-mongering, elitist, over-educated, communist, gun-controlling, baby-killing, son of a Kenyan get elected President? Maybe God is not as crazy as you people think he is?

Quite right - missed that one.
Should have also mentioned a willingness to lie, cheat and steal elections.
Also - an ability to defraud and intimidate minorities and poor from voting and have the nerve to call it "protecting voters rights".

Either

A: More people voted for Obama, believing he would lead the country out of darkness (highly unlikely) , or

B:The election was s.t.o.l.e.n AGAIN by the N.e.0c.0.n.s, who installed an unknown by the assumed name of Bara.ck 0.ba.ma, and a total incompetent by the name of J0.hn McC.ain, for the purpose of ensuring that the Milit.ary-Indus.trial-Maf.ia-D.i.s.n.e.y complex will never go out of style.

McCain has a life history of destroying things around him -- his marriage and family life(s) a series of jets, a car or two and a political run for the white house. He could have had it if he we did not pander to the lowest elements of the GOP. It was his to crash, and crash it , he did.

It's so funny how they stay away from using Palin as a reason McCain lost, because if they are such great pollsters they must know it!!! She caused a lot of people to choose Obama and she dragged McCain right into the dirt. They keep talking about how she "energized the party", maybe for a week, and then everyone but the radical base de-energized fast when they found out what a dip ---- she is.

Energized to wackos, you mean. They stayed energized. Plain and simple, it's the "me first" party.

Steve Schmidt and Karl Rove, and the other reich-wing henchmen who ran McCain's campaign had a large role in McCain losing.

I think what he was referring to was the early polls in April that showed McCain up by 3 to 6 points over both Clinton and Obama.

Perhaps the repubs didn't really want to win - just put on a good show. Let someone else clean up the mess,. which gets worse by the day. Challenge your opponent to make promises he can't possibly keep, then come back in four years and pick up the pieces. That would require some strategic planning, which was noticeably absent during the GOP campaign.

Another mistakewas the decision to run attack ads consistently that were so off the wall, that when Obama made a speech, he sounded so reasonable and capable, that it blew a hole it the tactic. McCain's ads were all attack and had and nothing to do with ideas about how to solve the problems. When he was in his famous town hall meetings, he made ridiculous, general statements like "I know how to get Osama Bin Ladin." Made him sound like either a liar or, if you know how to get him, why are you holding back on this important information?

You can analyze it to death (lots of second guessing and excuse making is what it sounds like to me) but winners are winners and losers are losers. McCain is now the guy that everyone loves to feel sorry for - and for good reason. He and his party are so out of touch with reality that I'm surprised that they did as well as they did except that many voters appear to be equally out of touch with reality - together they make a good team. If only they could recruit from the right side of the bell curve.

Have we not mentioned the elephant in the room, Sarah Palin? I was on the fence and was considering voting for McCain until he selected her as his running mate. It spoke volumes about his judgement.

What about the MOST Erratic "FOX" and "TALK RADIO" tactic driven campaign in history! Trying to blame outside circumstances and outsiders for this is simply silly and attempts to protect some very incapable managers.
