The chief pollster for John McCain's presidential campaign offered a candid diagnosis of how his candidate was done in, on occasion reserving harsh words for fellow Republicans.

Bill McInturff, speaking at a National Journal breakfast on Thursday, said the political environment for the GOP in 2008 was worse than anything he has seen in his time polling since former Soviet empires were breaking the shackles of communism.

"Reporters would call me up and say, 'have you ever seen this?'" McInturff said of George W. Bush's approval ratings. "And I say, 'yeah, Bulgaria 1992.'"

"We had a very unpopular war and the most unpopular president in American polling history," he explained, by way of summarizing the election. "We had a 70 percent wrong track and we were winning. We were winning. And what happened? We said that's not hard enough for John McCain. We should implode the financial markets. And what happens? We go from 70 percent wrong track to literally 90 percent."

Unrestrained by the formalities of the election, McInturff levied some sharps words at fellow GOPers who -- generally speaking -- never really were bullish on the idea of a McCain presidency. The most biting jabs were saved for communications guru Frank Luntz.

"I saw Frank Luntz," said McInturff, "who is a moron -- I want to make sure this is clearly on the record -- he was talking to Republican governors, making fun of John for not being able to use a BlackBerry. The man can't do it because he is much more disabled than people can imagine... I would like to take a hammer and start breaking bones in Frank's arms."

McInturff later noted that the Obama campaign ran an ad on this very topic, and vice presidential candidate Joe Biden criticized the spot because of its insensitivity.

In addition to going after Luntz, McInturff highlighted several factors that he credited with truly hurting the McCain candidacy. The first, and most obvious, was the crisis in the financial markets and the failure of the House of Representatives to quickly pass a bailout packaged.

"We had the House not voting for the bailout," he said, "which kept that story going for another seven days and helped implode the campaign."

The second was McCain's age, which was a huge handicap in a change election.

"When you have a 70-year-old nominee versus a new generation candidate," he said, "it is very hard."

The final, and most surprising, was the Hispanic vote, which trended heavily towards Obama. McInturff said that the most effective commercial of the campaign was the Spanish-language spot, put up by the now president-elect, which claimed that conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh was a McCain ally on immigration. Mainly, however, Obama had a huge financial advantage that allowed him to make great inroads within this and other minority communities.

"If the other team has 700 million and they are spending five times as much on Spanish language media saying that crap," he said, "it has an effect."

McCain lost because he lost every shred of credibility he had by pandering to the worst elements of the Republican Party.

He turned his back on what he believed. And took up the ideology of the worst Republicans.

And the American people could tell he was a phony.

John McCain should have been (and used to be) a far better man than the one who ran for President.

Yep, it was a different man than the one we saw in 2000. However, I am pleased, my guy won!! :)

Damn tooting.

I liked the 2000 McCain.

But not enough to want to see him as President.

Republicans really are clueless. This one's a bozo.

Instead of coming up with better policy, better messages, better INTENTIONS & PLANS for the people, Republicans think it's about coming up with the right word to trick the voters into thinking you're for something that you're not.

Exactly. That comes through loud and clear in Bill's words, doesn't it?

Other Republicans insist that McCain "wasn't conservative enough"... all morons.

maybe if mccain had learned how to eject from a plane properly instead of out partying, his arms wouldn't have gotten broken in the first place.

After hearing Palin speak about redistribution of wealth, socialism, and pockets of real Americana's, terrorist pals, it is no wonder the rep lost the election. The campaign kept saying Obama will raise your taxes, all the time knowing only the wealthy 5 percent of Americans tax would go up. There was no talk of help for the common person. I believe the American people saw right through the lies of Sarah and John. They seem to bank on America's stupidity. The cheer leader way and inciting hate also had a lot to do with the downfall. The intelligence of Pain is beyond question after hearing her interviews. America NEEDS intelligence in office after 8 years of stupidity.

Could someone please tell this joker that the election is OVER. Thanks for the analysis though, except for Luntz bashing I think I've heard the same thing over and over again since Nov. 5th. GOP always ahead of the curve.

heh, heard he formed a committee for re-election, his 5th term.

McCain, who can't even make his state happy and I heard at one point last year they were thinking of recalling him.

I don't know how he won his state. Maybe it was immigration.

Honestly, I'm getting tired of all this poor Republicans, poor McCain, poor Palin crap. I'm also tired of hearing that Obama won because he had more money to spend or because John McCain cannot work a Blackberry due to his war injuries or because Sarah Palin believes hunting wolves for helicopters is just avg. Joe Six-Pack out on the town. Barack Obama did not win because of all of the negatives of his opponents--though they certainly didn't hurt his chances. He didn't win because he's younger than McCain. He didn't win because Hispanics tied McCain to Limbaugh. He won because he campaigned on the promise of real HOPE. You in the media focus on the word CHANGE. Perhaps you didn't see the Mc-Cain-Palin signs that read "Change is Coming". McCain campaigned on CHANGE too. Hey, guess what, as long a GWB cannot get a third term, there was going to be a lot of CHANGE in the White House. Theoretically, there was no reason that McCain couldn't have picked Cheney to be his VP too, and 'wow' then there wouldn't have been as much change. Anyway, the point is that Obama campaigned on HOPE and that's what we Americans need right now more than anything. HOPE that the country we loved pre-2000 can rebound.

Why is it that nobody nowhere tells this like it was. Palin lost the election for McCain in two ways. First, there were too many Repubs who couldn't stomach her; second, the horror of her possible election really woke up any Democrats who might have been a little sleepy. After all, it was a fairly close race. Palin was the decider.

I truly believe Obama would've won without the financial crisis. He was up by a few points, and then there was the "reverse Bradley effect" that happened election day. Obama was always a shoe in.

And the financial crisis was not exactly an act of god. It's a result of failed policies and discredited ideology.

And for the record, most of McCain's injuries (including his broken arms) were incurred from his plane crash, when his aircraft was legitmately shot down during wartime while he was bombing civilians, a mission and tour that he volunteered for, and which would have safely ended with his return to his base had he not deliberately disobeyed direct orders from his superiors, and needlessly flown beyond his mission's stated objective, further into unsafe enemy territory. This was the last of something like 5 (very expensive) military aircraft that McCain crashed and destroyed during his military career, all apparently due to "hotdogging" -- taking unreasonable and dangerous risks. Would someone who was not the son and grandson of two 4-star admirals have continued to get away with such disciplinary infractions? The North Vietnamese did their best to mend his injuries, considering the state of medical care in an impoverished, wartorn country at the time, and even offered to release him early, which he "heroically" turned down. Perhaps if he had taken them up on their offer and returned home sooner to receive state of the art medical care, he wouldn't be as disabled now as he supposedly is.

Going after the mans combat record was stupid during the election.

How many missions over enemy territory did you fly?

To be clear: That is EXACTLY the tactics used by Chamblis to slander Max Cleland.

It was a disgrace when the Republicans did it. It is no better for Dems.

"The man can't do it because he is much more disabled than people can imagine... I would like to take a hammer and start breaking bones in Frank's arms."

Uhm ... it's not like you have to raise your hands up in the air to use the blackberry. Anyways, any time I see Frank Luntz on Bill Maher he pussyfoots around the fact that he's a Republican. It's like he doesn't want to admit it. That's pretty pathetic.

And EVERY presidential candidate gets a bounce after their conventions. To assume that because you get a bounce after the convention you're suddenly going to win the election is the stuff of amateurs.

(Part 1) Oh this is so much sour grapes b.s.! McCain not being able to use a Blackberry had absolutely nothing to do with PHYSICAL disability--When McCain made the comments that led to this being widely discussed, it was clear that he was saying he couldn't use one because HE DIDN'T KNOW HOW, not because he couldn't physically do it. Now this jerkoff is trying to garner sympathy for the old soldier who was tortured as a POW. That is pathetic, and making vague threat-like comments about breaking Luntz's arms, I guess so he could experience poor McCain's physical disabilities first-hand, is equally pathetic.

America is a diverse country. The Republican party is not diverse. If you watched the Republican convention or any McCain rally and you were a mnority, you very rarely saw anyone that looked like you. In addition, the republican party failed to address any issues important to the African American or Latino population. They made it easy for Obama and it will remain so as long as the extreme right wing nut jobs control the party.
