Obama Raised Over $500 Million Online During Campaign

Barack Obama raised half a billion dollars online in his 21-month campaign for the White House, dramatically ushering in a new digital era in presidential fundraising.

In an exclusive interview with The Post, members of the vaunted Triple O, Obama's online operation, broke down the numbers: 3 million donors made a total of 6.5 million donations online adding up to more than $500 million. Of those 6.5 million donations, 6 million were in increments of $100 or less. The average online donation was $80, and the average Obama donor gave more than once.

I gladly donated, but spending this much money on a campaign is not cool. No wonder Sen Mccain was angry that Barack backed out on the agreement....I hope he doesn't back out on us. Your word is your bond!

The new definition of public financing is "people funded campaigns."

Maybe we should save taxpayers some money by ending public financing. If a candidate is unable to raise money from supporters in $10, $20 and $30 checks, he or she should not be subsidized. This will let some very bright, courageous leaders emerge on the national stage. The two party system creates dynasties and fosters cronyism. Obama is now accountable to more than 3.5 million people who funded his campaign. He does not have to compromise his core values for fear that he will not be able to raise money for his re-election bid.

The online system requires donors to certify that they are U.S. citizens and otherwise eligible to contribute.

I found the ability to click out a $50 contribution was helpful and easy, for sure. Once bills were paid and everything was budgeted out, I could hop right from my bank website to the link in a campaign email, without having to go through a bunch of rigamarole. Granted, I only did it once, but it was great to feel I was contributing.

I'm still waiting on the 6-inch car magnet I was supposed to get as a gift for my contribution of $30 or more, though.

Aww. I got my magnet but it took a while (weeks, maybe even more than a month) to arrive. Bought a yard sign too, a bumper sticker and a rally sign. Maybe you should ask someone if they're still sending merchandise. You mighta got bumped off a list.

I donated to Obama campaign in several times $25 or $30 dollars at the time, totaling close to $400. I went door-to-door and I phoned. They can investigate me, I have nothing to hide. I am just happy to see the Bush Administration go; the only thing is that these 2 months before Obama takes office is going to feel like an eternity.
