I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Oradio

When things are looking up for them, it's no big bother to tune in to some radio talk at the lunatic fringe end of the right wing radio dial and hear about the battle between ideological opposites depicted in eliminationist terms. Yes, not as "loyal opposition" or "fervent debate" or even the more zesty talk of "permanent Republican majorities." No, no. When things are going well for purveyors of right wing radio, you're bound to hear chatter of how everyone left of the right is some sort of treasonous, anti-American criminal. And you know what they do with those, right?

You hear this same talk even when times are tough on the loony fringe -- but it comes with the added bonus of whinging terror as they assume that their own D&D-style revenge fantasies will soon be visited upon them.

And so, now, right wing radio is all a flutter with the notion that the Obama White House, working in combination with Nancy Pelosi and some magical Che Guevara tee-shirts, are set to reimpose the Fairness Doctrine and effectively muzzle the Limbaughs and Hannitys and Savages and all the lesser lights that populate that ever-declining medium known as terrestrial radio. The Fairness Doctrine, imposed in 1949, mandated that the scarcity of media resources made it necessary that FCC license holders allow competing points of view to have equal time and access. In practice, the Fairness Doctrine was always tricky to enforce, and so in 1987 is was done away with. In the immediate offing, right wing radio flourished. Of course, since then, the media has expanded to include satellite radio and cable television and the internet, eliminating the original "scarcity of resources" argument that underpinned the Fairness Doctrine in the first place, while greatly complicating a media sphere that the law couldn't handle well when it was implemented nearly sixty years ago.

Yet many people believe that the Fairness Doctrine is, for some reason, going to be making a return in 2009. George Will is warning his readers against it! Michael Gerson is advising Obama not to reimpose it! Kooky, episodic conspiracies are getting cooked up over it. And K. Lo at the National Review wants to come up with some new name to refer to it. Hey! How about the You All Are Totally Kidding Yourselves Doctrine?

Obama's official position is that he DOES NOT WANT the Fairness Doctrine reinstated. But it would be way too simple to leave it there, wouldn't it? So let's check in with Marin Cogan at The New Republic and take the pulse of the political will behind the reinstatement of the Fairness Doctrine:

Today, the doctrine has almost no support from media-reform advocates. According to Mark Lloyd, co-author of the CAP report, "I don't think there's any movement [to restore the fairness doctrine] at all. ... We don't support it. " Craig Aaron of the media-reform group FreePress says, "[I]n reality, the fairness doctrine as it existed is never ever coming back."

Responses from the offices of most of the Democrats who have been pegged as fairness-doctrine proponents -- Schumer, Dick Durbin, Dianne Feinstein, and others -- have ranged from a firm denial that the issue is a priority at all to disbelief at finding themselves at the center of a manufactured controversy. "Somebody plucked this out of the clear blue sky," says the press secretary for New Mexico Senator Jeff Bingaman, a Democrat who was questioned about the issue by a conservative radio-show host a few weeks ago. "This is a completely made- up issue." Senator Durbin's press secretary says that Durbin has "no plans, no language, no nothing. He was asked in a hallway last year, he gave his personal view"--that the American people were served well under the doctrine--"and it's all been blown out of proportion." In fact, as recently as last year, the House voted by an overwhelming three-to-one margin to temporarily prohibit the FCC from imposing the dead policy; 113 Democrats voted to support the move.

So: reformers don't support the Doctrine, and lawmakers -- when they aren't being weirded out by inquiries over an issue that's the furthest thought from their minds -- are choosing to vote against it in droves. I'm sorry, paranoid conservatives, but this dumbassed dog of yours simply won't hunt.

And look, why oh why would Obama, or the Democrats make some sustained drive to eliminate right wing radio now? The election is over, and the Obama campaign weathered the worst that right wing radio could throw at it. All that room on the radio dial seemed to have done more harm than good to their cause, so why would you want to muzzle it? Never interrupt your enemy when they are making a mistake!

FD should obviously be reinstated. Such a move would neutralize a huge portion of the Hate-right. Imagine the refreshing change to hear some random union organizer on your am radio on your drive to work.. The move to kill it was during Reagan's watch, which should be all the evidence we need for reinstating it.

Fear not, conservative talk-show-devotees. Democratic Congressional leaders sare not about to invoke the "Fairness Doctrine" any time soon, if at all. What with the economic catastrophe facing the nation, conservative talk shows are the least of their worries. Considering how the all-out efforts of Limbaugh, Hannity, Savage, O'Reilly, Imus, Boortz and others had such little sway in the '06 and, even less, in the '08 elections, liberal Democrats no longer regard them a threat. Quite the contrary. Most welcome them, for it is clear that the strident, biased fare of those talk show hosts, though entertaining, turns off the majority of critical-thinking Americans.

Conservatives at this juncture would be best advised to hang back for a while, hope that the Democrats regime will self-destruct (Obama might already have started on that course by choosing Clinton as Secretary of State) and in the meantime come up with fresher, more credible voices.

Not making stuff up, and a fresh new ideology may help as well.

Not that the Fairness Doctrine (or lack thereof) has anything to do whatsoever with the artificial viability of right wing talk radio.

Yeah maybe some ideas would do the job. They don't even need to be fresh. Just better than "Joe Whatever" and "Drill baby Drill" would be advisable. Take all your brainpower, which would fit into a match box, and try to think of something other than terrorist connection research and such. Then if you think reeeeaaaallly hard and you are diligent, we will see you in 2032.

Imus? Have you ever listened to Imus? He's quite clearly an oh-so-slightly-right of center old-McCain type. I don't know if he got a little wingnuttier in the process of following his boyfriend McCain over the cliff (or as part of the transition from his flagship moving from an apolitical sports station to a right-wing talk station), but lumping him in with those other guys is ludicrous. He used to have Chris Dodd on his show all the time, and they were very friendly. And lots of mainstream media journalists, no matter which way they lean. Good luck finding Andrea Mitchell on "The Savage Nation."

I don't even consider Imus's show a political show, even if politics does come up. It's more of a hard news-oriented Howard Stern.

To clarify my own point: Imus = Limbaugh is like saying Chris Matthews = Al Franken.

Why would Democrats want the Fairness Doctrine back? Then all the liberal media they have in their pockets would have to give equal time to conservatives thereby possibly hurting their own position.

Oh right, AM talk radio doesn't require critical thinking or common sense...

I'm getting a good chuckle out of Rush and Hannity being paranoid about something they dreamed up would happen. I do find it disturbing that the callers call in with "Sean you're a great American, etc"....his callers are buying into the pure foolishness of what Hannity is lying about. The callers don't seem to be able to look at the facts and see them for what they are. But maybe they only get their news from Hannity and Fox.....

Most people who listen to talk radio BS do it for a chuckle. Those who think it is Gospel were lost in the wilderness anyway.

My husband has been up on a ladder for the past week painting our house. Yesterday I heard him laughing so hard I thought the ladder would fall over. What was the Joke?.......He had the radio on and 'discovered' Rush Limbaugh. He thought it was some sort of parody. When I told him the jerk was for real, he turned it off. Obviously we don't have the radio on much.

So far, I see only two "sources" and both are News Corp properties: a Wall Street Journal *editorial* and somebody on Faux News called "Bill Hemmer."

A claim with no named source, unless it's about a state secret like Watergate, is just gossip.

BULLSHIT! Jason you are flat wrong. These are public airwaves. I can't get the internet in my car. I can't get MSNBC in my car. Satellite radio is not an option. What if it was? Why is the FAIRNESS DOCTRINE a bad thing?

Sorry Jason, there is NOTHING wrong with wanting to take back the public airwaves. It must be done! Stop setting the table for the right wing hate radio.

These right wing nuts that control talk radio are brainwashing sheeple across the country. How is that in the public's best interest? Having an opposing viewpoint on the same station isn't such a bad thing. The reason we are so polarized in this country is we are inundated with hate radio. Liberal radio is generally confined to the upper end of the dial-notorious for bad signals, fading and static. When I was growing up, the same station had liberal and conservative talkers. Now it's either all right radio or to a lesser extent, all left radio. We are where we are because of 3 things: 1. the elimination of the Fairness Doctrine, 2. Bill Clinton's 1996 Telecommunications Act, and 3. Constant deregulation and media consolidation by the FCC.

How else to counter the constant right wing spin? I think the Fairness Doctrine needs to come back. We need to repeal the Telecommunications Act of 1996, and we need to re-regulate the air waves and break up these fascist monopolies.

There are left-wing talk shows on the air, too. They are not QUITE as foam-at-the-mouth crazy as the rabid right, but still living on the edge of Crazytown.

There is no need for a fairness doctrine. It's a waste of resources to enforce, anyway. Money better spent elsewhere. We need education policy. the smarter people become the more of these lying bloviators will die off anyway from lack of audience.

That hasn't happened. While you tout the need for education policy, right wing nuts are singing the praises of No Child Left Behind. Wake up. These are public airwaves. Government regulation is necessary where the public interest is concerned. I'm all for right wing hate talk and free speech. Balance it, however, with an opposing viewpoint! God Damn!

I say regulate their asses right off OUR airwaves.

They have no right to OUR airwaves with their hate speech, which is ONLY harming OUR country, and enriching only a few people.

As for the entertaining aspect, perhaps these local yokels would be better off yodeling in the high hills of Appalachia.

These are the same people who rant at Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Keith Obermann and many others for being anti American and who want to have laws implemented limiting personal freedoms’ and choice, but now make up a non existent issue to detract from their lack of competency and the total inability to deliver the election to McCain.

What will eventually "kill" right wing radio ---- is right wing radio.

Their audience is shrinking, as more and more people find "real" sources of news.

AS AN ADVOCATE OF FREE SPEECH, I STILL OPPOSE THE RIGHT TO YELL "FIRE" IN A CROWDED THEATER.
AS WELL, I OPPOSE THE RIGHT TO SLANDER OTHERS FOR POLITICAL AND MONETARY GAIN.
I SUPPORT A LAW THAT WOULD HOLD SLANDERERS (BILL-O THE CLOWN, HANNITY THE DOUGH-BOY, RUSH THE DRUGGIE) ACCOUNTABLE.
PS
HOLDING MYSELF ACCOUNTABLE:
BILL-O IS A CLOWN (HE FANCIES HIMSELF A FUNNY-MAN;
HANNITY IS PUDGY;
RUSH IS A CONVICTED DRUG ABUSER.
