When things are looking up for them, it's no big bother to tune in to some radio talk at the lunatic fringe end of the right wing radio dial and hear about the battle between ideological opposites depicted in eliminationist terms. Yes, not as "loyal opposition" or "fervent debate" or even the more zesty talk of "permanent Republican majorities." No, no. When things are going well for purveyors of right wing radio, you're bound to hear chatter of how everyone left of the right is some sort of treasonous, anti-American criminal. And you know what they do with those, right?

You hear this same talk even when times are tough on the loony fringe -- but it comes with the added bonus of whinging terror as they assume that their own D&D-style revenge fantasies will soon be visited upon them.

And so, now, right wing radio is all a flutter with the notion that the Obama White House, working in combination with Nancy Pelosi and some magical Che Guevara tee-shirts, are set to reimpose the Fairness Doctrine and effectively muzzle the Limbaughs and Hannitys and Savages and all the lesser lights that populate that ever-declining medium known as terrestrial radio. The Fairness Doctrine, imposed in 1949, mandated that the scarcity of media resources made it necessary that FCC license holders allow competing points of view to have equal time and access. In practice, the Fairness Doctrine was always tricky to enforce, and so in 1987 is was done away with. In the immediate offing, right wing radio flourished. Of course, since then, the media has expanded to include satellite radio and cable television and the internet, eliminating the original "scarcity of resources" argument that underpinned the Fairness Doctrine in the first place, while greatly complicating a media sphere that the law couldn't handle well when it was implemented nearly sixty years ago.

Yet many people believe that the Fairness Doctrine is, for some reason, going to be making a return in 2009. George Will is warning his readers against it! Michael Gerson is advising Obama not to reimpose it! Kooky, episodic conspiracies are getting cooked up over it. And K. Lo at the National Review wants to come up with some new name to refer to it. Hey! How about the You All Are Totally Kidding Yourselves Doctrine?

Obama's official position is that he DOES NOT WANT the Fairness Doctrine reinstated. But it would be way too simple to leave it there, wouldn't it? So let's check in with Marin Cogan at The New Republic and take the pulse of the political will behind the reinstatement of the Fairness Doctrine:

Today, the doctrine has almost no support from media-reform advocates. According to Mark Lloyd, co-author of the CAP report, "I don't think there's any movement [to restore the fairness doctrine] at all. ... We don't support it. " Craig Aaron of the media-reform group FreePress says, "[I]n reality, the fairness doctrine as it existed is never ever coming back."

Responses from the offices of most of the Democrats who have been pegged as fairness-doctrine proponents -- Schumer, Dick Durbin, Dianne Feinstein, and others -- have ranged from a firm denial that the issue is a priority at all to disbelief at finding themselves at the center of a manufactured controversy. "Somebody plucked this out of the clear blue sky," says the press secretary for New Mexico Senator Jeff Bingaman, a Democrat who was questioned about the issue by a conservative radio-show host a few weeks ago. "This is a completely made- up issue." Senator Durbin's press secretary says that Durbin has "no plans, no language, no nothing. He was asked in a hallway last year, he gave his personal view"--that the American people were served well under the doctrine--"and it's all been blown out of proportion." In fact, as recently as last year, the House voted by an overwhelming three-to-one margin to temporarily prohibit the FCC from imposing the dead policy; 113 Democrats voted to support the move.

So: reformers don't support the Doctrine, and lawmakers -- when they aren't being weirded out by inquiries over an issue that's the furthest thought from their minds -- are choosing to vote against it in droves. I'm sorry, paranoid conservatives, but this dumbassed dog of yours simply won't hunt.

And look, why oh why would Obama, or the Democrats make some sustained drive to eliminate right wing radio now? The election is over, and the Obama campaign weathered the worst that right wing radio could throw at it. All that room on the radio dial seemed to have done more harm than good to their cause, so why would you want to muzzle it? Never interrupt your enemy when they are making a mistake!

geez. I saw Laura Ingram yakking about this with BillO on Fox last night, and he had the stalker reporters surprising Dems in the halls of Congress. I know, I know, I have to watch Fox when the boyfriend is at home. Fortunately he works most evenings....
Is it possible that they are using this as a fundraising tool? Support your local bigot?

I consider it my patriotic duty to listen to Air America and NovaM Radio when I have the chance, and also to catch Olbermann, and my fave Rachel Maddow on MSNBC.

Maybe left wing talk radio will start to take root to counteract the netroots movement. I don't think our shows would get as many ratings because the left doesn't sell fear. Fear and hate sells. Sad but true.

I'm sorry, but I believe the ratings are going up incredibly. Also, the left's radio shows like Randi Rhodes are blocked from being heard in many parts of the country.

The left doesn't sell fear? Do you really think conservatives have a monopoly on hyping legitimate fears? Health care, climate change, civil liberties are hyped by the left just as much as terrorism, illegal immigration, and yes, civil liberties are hyped by the right.

There are legitimate things to fear in the world and I rely on scientists or people who cite scientists to tell me what those are and not Rush Limbaugh. One side has facts, the other has fears.

The thing they care most about is money. If you don't watch them, then they don't make money. Money is how they base their relevance.

I remember an episode of Scooby Doo where Scoob and Shaggy are walking through a haunted swamp and the fog is really thick. Scooby takes out a knife and cuts off a piece of the fog in the shape of a donut. Then he eats the fog donut.

I think the same principle could be applied to the right-wing echo chamber. Only instead of eating fog one could actually cut off a piece of fear. It's so thick over there at the loony end of the radio dial and FreeRepbulic - the fear takes on physical substance.

I'm going over there now with knife in hand. I'm going to eat a piece of fear for breakfast.

Where in the world you can find so many right-wing talk radio shows spreading hate and demoralising a group of people who listen to them ?

What's born every minute? I seem to recall P.T. Barnum have an observation about that.

Right wing talk radio isn't really about "ideology" any more than flim flam "pastors" are about god. Its a scam. They have to mantain a regular audience to keep the advertsing dollars flowing in. Right wing talk radio is in a constant state of high hysteria over something, anything. Today its this, tomorrow it will be that. It all falls into the framwork of imagined victimization, bitterness and a bigotry. Its a formula that relies on ignorance, fear and an inability to formulate your own thoughts.

Just listen to the comercials that run on talk radio stations. Even the big major national shows are filled with snake oil and hucksters. There's a strange The Music Man" quality to talk radio hosts. They're all phonies.

But they are so much worse than the National Enquirer up by the candy bars. They are the crying "fire ' in a crowded theatre with their racialized and anti liberal rhetoric. I often wonder how many of these crazy serial killers ,school shooters and just garden variety gay and immigrant attackers listened to them.

Jason your a fool if you don't think Right wing radio isn't destroying this country and will continue to destroy this country if nothing is done. Some thing has to be done and done fast. I'm telling you right now if Obama governs from the center right or even from (what is considered the center today) I will not vote for him again. I live in North Carolina and I hear it every day the lies and the talking points from Orielly, Hanity, Rush.......believe me this is a huge problem maybe the biggest problem we face today because it all start with the media.

You have a point. They will just get another guy, a new guy, dress him up, make him look like he is one of the people, and he will be better at lying like Limbaugh and others were at first. They will try to have him differentiate himself fromt the already sullied. Limbaugh and the boys will never be trusted again, but the same kind of tactics will be used again and people will be fooled again. We have to strengthen defamation and pro pa ga nda laws. F this fairness doctrine thing. It never worked very well anyway. They will start to cry foul that they are being cen sored by the "liberal media". The way to d e s t r o their arguments is to not let them get away with labeling things. They say liberal so derisively so many times that it really becomes a bad word in people's minds. Ask them what a liberal is and why that is bad? Or a socialist? They can't do it. They have also taken the word conservative as if they own it. When was the last time a "conservative" balanced a budget? Fox should be s u e d for false advertising. FAIR AND BALANCED, MY ARSE.

Re "....it all starts with the media."
-----------------
I understand your concern, but, as I've said elsewhere, it all actually starts with good education, so people are able to separate fact from fiction for themselves -- just as you can. We're none of us ever 100% right 100% of the time, but it doesn't matter how often someone tells us (OK.....YELLS AT US) that the Earth is around 6,500 years old if we happen to know for a fact that it's closer to 4.5 billion (and the Universe, which the Bible -- written by Bronze Age people in the deserts of the Middle East some 3,000 years ago -- never even mentions, is closer to 13 billion).

So let these emotionally blackmailing troglodytes exercise their 1st amendment rights, short of inciting violence, but give everyone the educational wherewithal to be able to laugh in their face, as everyone that I know does -- at which point Limbaugh and Hannity are rendered utterly harmless; entertaining, even.

The Congressman was right. The GOP is a huge part of the problem. Talk radio out? Guess they are proving the truth in one old statement: "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all."

I think the fairness doctrine should be re-instated, people should have the opportunity to listen to both points of view on an issue. It will also stop hate-mongers like Rush, Insanity, and Fox fake news from spewing lies and distortions. rush and his ilk has gone to far, fringing on slander and smearing.

Jason Linkins' article is insultingly dismissive of the notion of restoring the Fairness Doctrine, yet as long as I've been posting here I've seen it discussed and argued about repeatedly.

But this is the danger bloggers face in becoming "official media" personalities, at least wihtin their own mind; they no long feel the pulse of what is being discussed, but go straight to the so-called "experts" and political talking heads for consensus material to back up a premise they've already made up their minds about.

Just by judging from the many pro-Fairness Doctrine comments posted at HuffPo, Mr. Linkins could surely have come to the logical conclusion that there is more than a mere scattering of support for reinstating the FD.

But obviously such miniscule efforts at research [at a site where his works appears regularly, no less] aren't a priority with Mr. Linkins.

If the media is the "liberal media" as the right claims, why wouldn't they welcome the Fairness Doctrine - to add some "fair and balanced" to all the shows.

There were 800 meetings of MoveOn members last night. At our meeting here we discussed ways to help President Obama achieve progressive goals in the first year.

Take back the word "socialism" - that was one everyone agreed is necessary. Talk radio is to blame for maligning the English language by giving new, false meanings to words.

There are vast stretches in the midwest where the only radio in range is Rush Limbaugh and crazy preachers.

Talk radio as it stands is a menace to America. Some standards must be applied.
