Oradio

When things are looking up for them, it's no big bother to tune in to some radio talk at the lunatic fringe end of the right wing radio dial and hear about the battle between ideological opposites depicted in eliminationist terms. Yes, not as "loyal opposition" or "fervent debate" or even the more zesty talk of "permanent Republican majorities." No, no. When things are going well for purveyors of right wing radio, you're bound to hear chatter of how everyone left of the right is some sort of treasonous, anti-American criminal. And you know what they do with those, right?

You hear this same talk even when times are tough on the loony fringe -- but it comes with the added bonus of whinging terror as they assume that their own D&D-style revenge fantasies will soon be visited upon them.

And so, now, right wing radio is all a flutter with the notion that the Obama White House, working in combination with Nancy Pelosi and some magical Che Guevara tee-shirts, are set to reimpose the Fairness Doctrine and effectively muzzle the Limbaughs and Hannitys and Savages and all the lesser lights that populate that ever-declining medium known as terrestrial radio. The Fairness Doctrine, imposed in 1949, mandated that the scarcity of media resources made it necessary that FCC license holders allow competing points of view to have equal time and access. In practice, the Fairness Doctrine was always tricky to enforce, and so in 1987 is was done away with. In the immediate offing, right wing radio flourished. Of course, since then, the media has expanded to include satellite radio and cable television and the internet, eliminating the original "scarcity of resources" argument that underpinned the Fairness Doctrine in the first place, while greatly complicating a media sphere that the law couldn't handle well when it was implemented nearly sixty years ago.

Yet many people believe that the Fairness Doctrine is, for some reason, going to be making a return in 2009. George Will is warning his readers against it! Michael Gerson is advising Obama not to reimpose it! Kooky, episodic conspiracies are getting cooked up over it. And K. Lo at the National Review wants to come up with some new name to refer to it. Hey! How about the You All Are Totally Kidding Yourselves Doctrine?

Obama's official position is that he DOES NOT WANT the Fairness Doctrine reinstated. But it would be way too simple to leave it there, wouldn't it? So let's check in with Marin Cogan at The New Republic and take the pulse of the political will behind the reinstatement of the Fairness Doctrine:

Today, the doctrine has almost no support from media-reform advocates. According to Mark Lloyd, co-author of the CAP report, "I don't think there's any movement [to restore the fairness doctrine] at all. ... We don't support it. " Craig Aaron of the media-reform group FreePress says, "[I]n reality, the fairness doctrine as it existed is never ever coming back."

Responses from the offices of most of the Democrats who have been pegged as fairness-doctrine proponents -- Schumer, Dick Durbin, Dianne Feinstein, and others -- have ranged from a firm denial that the issue is a priority at all to disbelief at finding themselves at the center of a manufactured controversy. "Somebody plucked this out of the clear blue sky," says the press secretary for New Mexico Senator Jeff Bingaman, a Democrat who was questioned about the issue by a conservative radio-show host a few weeks ago. "This is a completely made- up issue." Senator Durbin's press secretary says that Durbin has "no plans, no language, no nothing. He was asked in a hallway last year, he gave his personal view"--that the American people were served well under the doctrine--"and it's all been blown out of proportion." In fact, as recently as last year, the House voted by an overwhelming three-to-one margin to temporarily prohibit the FCC from imposing the dead policy; 113 Democrats voted to support the move.

So: reformers don't support the Doctrine, and lawmakers -- when they aren't being weirded out by inquiries over an issue that's the furthest thought from their minds -- are choosing to vote against it in droves. I'm sorry, paranoid conservatives, but this dumbassed dog of yours simply won't hunt.

And look, why oh why would Obama, or the Democrats make some sustained drive to eliminate right wing radio now? The election is over, and the Obama campaign weathered the worst that right wing radio could throw at it. All that room on the radio dial seemed to have done more harm than good to their cause, so why would you want to muzzle it? Never interrupt your enemy when they are making a mistake!

Mr. L. --

It's really quite simple -- creating a crisis where none exists, is a classic bullying tactic, and this is merely an attempt by the right-wing bullies to do so.

Anyone who's ever taught middle school kids, recognizes this behavior for what it is: a distraction to force the "teacher" to deal with it, regarless of whether or not it truly merits the attention it demands.

It's also Karl the Rove's Rule #5, in his Book of Dirty Deeds Manual, subtitled, "Ways to Keep the Base Fired Up About Non-Issues."

What's irritating, is the MSM's insistence on commenting on it like it is really something newsworthy -- especially with a crumbling economy and two major conflicts to deal with. But they have laundry soap to sell . . .

Yes, I heard these crazy allegations before the election too.

The idea is insane enough not to bother me, in itself. But what DOES bother me is the knowledge that when this scenario fails to occur, as it eventually will, none of these radio hosts will be taken to task for it. They'll just either silently drop the subject and pretend it never happened. Or worse, they'll claim 'victory' in their imaginary battle against the imaginary plans.

That lack of accountability is the luxury radio hosts and pundits have which politicians do not. It is also why we should be very, very, wary of their opinions. OTOH, I'd say this mode of operation is also why the Republicans suck at governing. As the Iraq war has illustrated well, reality will always catch up sooner or later. (Albeit tragically late at times)

The operative word is 'show' ... this is a 'show' these guys do each and every day. It's entertainment. And it's how these idiots make their living. Most, however, see it as 'news'.

The Fairness Doctrine was and is a good doctrine and should be reimposed as the law of the land... if for no other reason than to filter and weaken the fascist movement in American!

Radio and the broadcast industry lived with the Fairness Doctrine in the past and can do so again

Of couse this will be at the top of Obama's list! Financial Meltdown...it can wait. War in Iraq...what's a coupla more years. Health Care fiasco...we're all gonna die someday, aren't we.

But mother-of-all-thats-holy..we HAVE to put a stop to Limbaugh, Hannity, et. all...THIS is the problem we have to focus on!

Did Right Wing Radio throw out logic during Spring cleaning? Are they seriously convincing their listeners that one of the most pressing issues Obama needs to deal with is giving Air America-esqu talk shows equal time? Their rhetoric is comically mind-numbing.

They've blathered on about the Fairness Doctrine and how it almost killed all the local radio stations and how Obama and the evil Dems want to reinstate it until nearly everyone I talk to with conservative leanings believes that it's absolute fact. Do a tour of some of the right-wing blogging sites and you'll find lots of people who believe that a) Obama will IMMEDIATELY reinstate the Fairness Doctrine and b) Obama will then turn to censoring all media and take his revenge on anyone that criticizes him and his policies, and c) anyone who publicly criticizes the government will end up being visited by strong--arm lawyers armed with lawsuits and writs - right after the Secret Service leaves. Rush and his ilk believe that they are in danger of being crushed under the heel of a totalitarian government whose aim is to silence all opposition to its secret plans to turn the US into a Third World country because they are the biggest obstacle to those plans coming to fruition.

I simultaneously loathe and am extremely entertained by HannaLimbavage, et. all. I do force myself to listen to them at least once a week, just to get a taste of what other viewpoints are. The lastest buzzwords/drinking game for them is 'socialism' (But you'd be hammered within 10 minuites. seriously!) The best thing that could have happened to these fringe freaks was Obama's victory.

It's ironic that the talking heads who supported the party of suspending habeus corpus, listening into private citizens phone calls, etc., are worried about their freedom being taken away.

To me, Al Jazeera English offers fair coverage on events and personalities throughout the world. When they were trying to enter the US market, they did investigative reporting of a quality rarely experienced by US viewers. They gave ordinary Americans a chance to speak.
The Real News Network interviews personalities worldwide who give needed insight and analysis.
Bloggers on Global Voices present insights and eyewitness accounts with a degree of freedom undreamed in America.
The Americans are best with late night comedy shows, which should air everywhere. They don't need censorship or fairness doctrines, as few viewers have the ability to distinguish right from wrong or truth from falsehood.
I say let's open all channels and let the viewers make up their own minds what to absorb.

Then why is it our soldiers are only getting "FOX NOISE" and all other channels are not reaching them? When my husband was stationed in Germany during the Berlin Airlift he had access to all of the American News plus Air America!!!

Perhaps now that Iraqis will be in control of our soldiers and what is accessed by them, they will be able to know what is going on in the rest if the world while serving in that country.

We can only hope that happens!!! These hate mongers make our country a dangerous place, they instill violence in the mentally ill and give credence to a whole lot of nutty thinking with their inflammatory ideas. Most, if not all, of the people who broadcast this garbage are egomaniacal and disturbed and the organizations that pay them millions of dollars should be ashamed. Sarah Palin was a true friend of hate media, she liked to stoke the fires and rabble rouse. She thinks that this is politics as usual. They turn out to be very, very sore losers as well, this only makes them more dangerous, who knows what they can rile up with their irresponsible rhetoric. It is sad to know that they have an audience of weak minded, off kilter listeners, but at least they were not the voting majority.

Two things:

1) Right Wing Talk Radio uses the Ah.madin.ej.ad model:
Always have a bogeyman to keep yourself in power. Make one up if there are none handy--this way you will always have the fearful and the gullible to follow you.

2) Right Wing Talk Radio's ideology cannot withstand analysis, scrutiny, and opposition.

Right wing Authoritarian followers are psychologically incapable of scrutinizing or analyzing their leaders, and since RWAFs believe that THEY are the real america, no one else should even have a say.
