ABC News reports that an elementary school in Long Island, New York, "has been re-named in honor of President-elect Barack Obama":

Ludlum Elementary School in Long Island's Hempstead Union Free School District was re-named at a board meeting Thursday, at the request of numerous school students.

"Just to watch these kids after the board voted on what they asked them to do, they were so elated," school district superintendent Dr. Joseph Laria told ABC News. "You want to talk about "Yes we can!"? That was a lesson in democracy."

Effective immediately, Ludlum will now be known as Barack Obama Elementary School, following a decision by the board to adopt the resolution drafted by students and staff.

The impetus behind the name change is credited to the school's proximity to Hofstra University, the site of the third Presidential debate, which reportedly captured the imagination of the students.

The school will be officially rededicated in January, following the Inauguration. Obama will be invited to attend the ceremony.

Beautiful. In the past few weeks I' ve been a bit sad that I'm no longer teaching so that the next time a kid said "I can't because....." I could say "look at that. Yes you can."
I've never been more proud to be an American.

every republican should spend every waking moment from now until obama is gone undermining everything he says and does, and not let up, as we have listened to nothing less.

well when a president starts his term under clouds of suspicion what do you expect?

Oh, I'm sorry, Bush has done such a spanking job hasn't he? The economy and international relations are just humming along eh?

Yeah your boy didn't deserve any criticism did he?

Aaah!! I guess that's your way of putting Country first. Like you did the last 8 years eh! BO will make you proud. No Red or Blue States. Just the United States of America. Why is it that hard for you to grasp? You may be a Republican, but can you not put your bitterness aside for 8 years like we did for the last 8 and see if we ALL TOGETHER (Republicans, Democrats, Independents and Others TOGETHER) take this great Country to a more prosperous future? Did I fail to mention....TOGETHER?

After these "people" spent all their time running down this country and anyone who wasn't part of their cabal, they are bitter. We're now denying them their self-perceived martyrdom.

The naming after the prez-elect is cool, but to see the kids so engaged is fabulous.

I wouldn't name a bathroom stall after G.W. Bush.

I would, however, name one after Larry Craig. Matter of fact - i'd have a company produce a complete line of stalls, fittings, mats, toilet paper, sanitizers, etc etc after good ole Larry.

I did like the sewage treatment plant idea, though. Of course, I'd try to get him to show up so someone can push him in.

I think naming a public restroom stall after GWB is quite appropriate.

As much as I have high hopes for an Obama presidency, I think there ought to be a law forbidding the naming of any public building, highway, etc, after any politician until 20 years after his or her death.

(Of course, there was the referendum somewhere about naming a sewage treatment plant after Bush, but "Those are my principles, and if you don't like them... well, I have others." -- Groucho Marx)

I agree with you, to some extent.....He's not president as yet...nobody, knows for sure, if he'll do well during his presidency. However, if he does well, I don't see why they should wait, until he dies.

And in Wasilla, Alaska, they've named a turkey farm after Sarah Palin!

That would be funny if they hadn't just broadcast an interview with Palin with a turkey slaughter (I guess at a processing plant) occurring in the background. Nobody can believe that her people allowed that to happen.

That was quick. Everybody needs to calm the eff down. I love Obama as much as the next guy, but let's wait until he's accomplished something as president before we start naming stuff after him. (I seriously doubt this but) he may not end up being as successful as we all expect and then we'd have to re-rename things.

Short of nuclear winter, I doubt very much Obama can be a worst president than JWB. I say let the kids be optimistic, after all, it's their future that's really riding on this.

becoming the first black president of the united states is a huge accomplishment. that inspired those kids to rename their school after him.

Don't forget that these kids have been inspired by BO just as much as adults. To see what they could accomplish if they worked hard enough. This is what BO has been telling young kids. That they need to work hard. And Parents need to pay attention. This is the future generation. My kids appreciate going to school even more now that they have followed the BO story this far. Even without accomplishing anything in the future, everyone now knows that success is possible and there are no huddles to great to overcome.

A lot of us needed experience this. A lot of us thought that we could not get past a certain point no matter how much we tried. That does not hold true any more. That is the whole point IMO of this story. The inspiration.

Regardless, he's still the first black president and that's quite an accomplishment. Wouldn't you say?

A pre-requisite is to own your own pair of binoculars so you can see Russia from the front of the school... and jump to action when Putin invades Alaskan airspace!
