I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Letterman Couric

David Letterman's Katie Couric interview made headlines for Couric talking about Sarah Palin — but many, including the New York Post, were surprised that Letterman didn't talk about John McCain, and the infamous night when McCain lied to Letterman and ditched him to "return to Washington immediately," only for Letterman to find him in Couric's interview chair later that day.

Letterman fixed that Thursday night by calling Couric — who was "just hanging around, watching Oprah" — to discuss that night.

"I was all prepped to chat with you about this and you had brain synapse misfirings," Couric told him.

"Dave, I had no idea he was booked on your show," Couric said. "So, you know, he called me on my cell phone - does he have your cell phone number, Dave? He said, listen, I'm suspending my campaign, and he told me why, and I said, Senator McCain, that's interesting. You're in New York, why don't you come and do an interview so you can tell the American people rather than just tell me? Had I known he had made a commitment to you...I would've said, by all means, go do Dave's show. "

"I think you were in on this," Letterman said.

"I promise you. I had no idea until you apparently had a little cow on the air with Keith Olbermann," she responded. "And then you did that creepy Big Brother thing by stealing our video."

Dave also complained that he was left to talk to Keith Olbermann, to which Couric responded, "I feel for you, Dave."

During these past months I realized how much I like Dave. And Katie has been a blast.

Canadian headline writer much? Don't Americans say "called" instead of "phoned"?

I'm American and use "phoned" and "called" fairly equally. Occasionally even "rang/rung up."

I guess I'm international that way. :p

Does Leno still beat him in the ratings? If so, I don't get it. Dave's show is way more entertaining than Leno's and always has been.

Leno has Jay Leno-itis, which is when you laugh at your own jokes, sometimes even before you deliver the punchline.

I think, while I did enjoy it all, Dave did do a very patriotic thing exposing McCain.
I also think Katie would maybe still be hot with her hair a natural gray..

Hilarious !!! McCain flying into Washington with his Superman cape and unable to save the day...What a horrible campaign team he put together. Makes me wonder if they really wanted him to win afterall.

I have developed a whole new fondness for Katie Couric throughout this election cycle. She's smart, fair, funny, and obviously able to stand up for herself. I hope people get off her back now and let her do her damn job.

I have liked her from day one. I think she just has that drive to get her to her destination. I also like the direction she has taken the broadcast to. I love Steve Hartman's contribution to the show. You go girl!

Gee, Running for President and trying to decide whether to go on a late night entertainment show, or a serious news show? Hmm. And then to be dissed about it.
I didn't vote for McCain, but the only mistake I believe he made was in not telling Letterman than he was going on the evening news instead of lying about it. In any event, Letterman is an entertainer, and up until this point I always thought that running for leader of the United States was a serious position, not be be dictated by the entertainers.

The problem is he LIED to Letterman. There was a super simple way to get it done honorably. Simply tell Dave the truth. Instead he lied about it, and he got busted in a bald-faced lie on national TV.

Does it make it OK to lie since it's not a "serious news show"? I don't think so. It's a glimpse into the psyche of the candidate and how he comports himself. He was found lacking, not only by Dave but by MILLIONS of viewers. I wonder how many of those viewers were also voters?

The lie WAS the problem - it would have been completely understandable, in the midst of a huge economic crisis, for McCain to have told Dave that it just wasn't appropriate, at that time, to do his show - he slinked out of it & lied - that was the issue ....lying is a no-no.

Actually "Impaler" he should play that at least once a month to remind us all of just how close we came to having another liar in the White House!!!

The show where McCain ditched Letterman was the best show ever in history. It showed what kind of man McCain really was.

How long is he going to milk this thing? The fact that he keeps on recycling this blunder tells more about him and his writers than McCain.

Relax... He's a comedian. Ask any comedian how many times do they tell a joke and they all will tell you... until they stop laughing at it.

I'll bet if he mentioned this once a night for the next 10 years, he still wouldn't come close to how many times Mc Cain mentioned "Joe the Plumber". Dave's got nothing on Mc Cain's milking experience.

"Creepy big brother thing"??? No way, Katie. That was a GREAT moment in American politics, being able to catch a politician living in the dead center of his lie!
Come on, Katie, let's get real.

Sometimes it looks like it's a job but when these comedian/talk show hosts are happy and having fun its terrific!

Bill Maher was hitting the notes last week and sounds like Dave is back in the mood too.

There should be a good time coming up but if not then these guys are going to be important keeping people sane.
