Letterman Couric

David Letterman's Katie Couric interview made headlines for Couric talking about Sarah Palin — but many, including the New York Post, were surprised that Letterman didn't talk about John McCain, and the infamous night when McCain lied to Letterman and ditched him to "return to Washington immediately," only for Letterman to find him in Couric's interview chair later that day.

Letterman fixed that Thursday night by calling Couric — who was "just hanging around, watching Oprah" — to discuss that night.

"I was all prepped to chat with you about this and you had brain synapse misfirings," Couric told him.

"Dave, I had no idea he was booked on your show," Couric said. "So, you know, he called me on my cell phone - does he have your cell phone number, Dave? He said, listen, I'm suspending my campaign, and he told me why, and I said, Senator McCain, that's interesting. You're in New York, why don't you come and do an interview so you can tell the American people rather than just tell me? Had I known he had made a commitment to you...I would've said, by all means, go do Dave's show. "

"I think you were in on this," Letterman said.

"I promise you. I had no idea until you apparently had a little cow on the air with Keith Olbermann," she responded. "And then you did that creepy Big Brother thing by stealing our video."

Dave also complained that he was left to talk to Keith Olbermann, to which Couric responded, "I feel for you, Dave."

One of many McCain blunders. Don't mess with the LetterMAN. I wish I knew how many votes Pappy lost because he messed with the wrong guy.
Thank goodness we're going have a brilliant person deal withthe global economic meltdown rather than Johnny Mac who says he has a lot to learn about economics.
Let's get behind him, support him and work hard to make the turnaround happen
Go Obama!!

And now Sarah Palin is doing interviews while turkeys are slaughtered in the background. You just can write this stuff folks.

It was obvious when Letterman had Keith Olberman on and had the snit fit about McCain blowing him off and lying to him that it opened a whole lot of peoples eyes to what manipulation McCain was doing. It also proved to milions of people that McCain lied. People know at may levels our politicians will lie to us about things and although we do not like it at times there are not many choices. But when someone wants you to trust them and their words then lies to someone everyone knows and it is proven in front of us...no one will much want to believe or trust them after that. McCain lied and tried to play games with us in front of us and Letterman proved it. He did us a great service as he alone could and did show the whole country McCain's true motivation and lies for doing what he did about the "suspension" which was total BS and which he had no one but himself for doing te grandstanding and lying which brought him down.

And no way McCain could do the usual thing and lay it off on an underling. He personally got caught in the middle of a big, honking lie...a lie he told in order to gain unfair advantage over his opponent.

This wasn't one of those little white lies everybody tells. It was the big, ugly self-serving variety of lie that makes people want to wash the liar's mouth out with a bar of good, old-fashioned laundry soap.

Damn, but it looked good on him when Letterman started having fun with the situation.

There was great chemistry between Dave and Katie! They should go on the road as a comedy team.

He was one of the reasons McCain lost, cause he kept reminding us and the public what an idiot John McCain was, like nobody would notice his at katie's channel giving an interview or at dinner after talking about suspending my campaign to go save the world

I have respect for katie couric and dave for doing their jobs now

Dave was also the only person I saw that asked McCain to explain his association with G. Gordon Liddy when his campaign was harping on William Ayers.

Steve Chapman did a column on McCain-Liddy in the Chicago Trib, but you're right, no one on TV asks these questions.

No he wasn't. The folks that voted for McCain probably don't watch Letterman. And Obama had the East and west coasts sewed up already. If he did anything he further exposed the fact that the media was trying to give Daddy MaC a pass on his associations while they beat the $#!+ out of Obama because of his.

I'LL talk to Keith Olbermann ANYTIME! I used to say, when I was blogging about Bush Admin everyday, that when I was sent to Gitmo, I wanted to be in the next cell from Keith Olbermann. It looks like I can now cancel my 'vacation' to Gitmo! (But, I WILL miss Keith)!

What McCain SHOULD have done was bail on Couric too and show up on the set of Hannity to plug his trip to save the US economy

I think McCain did Couric for two reasons. One, to talk about suspending his campaign (which I still don't believe he did) and two, to clean up the mess Palin left.

I still remember when Dave had Regis' time slot in the late 70's and early 80's. He used to dis unsuspecting housewives. Funny thing is his humor still as biting as it ever was. I find it funny that Katy more than held her own with Dave here.

Me too! I might have been like 9 or 10 when it was on (I'm in Indiana, but I was too young to remember him as local weatherman).
That show was awesome! and yes, he loves saying things that go just slightly over their heads, which can sometimes cause some hilarious responses. It's a real skill, and really underrated. I love Dave.

For the short time it was on, I got up early and watched it before school.

I was in HS and then college. Ahhhh college! Dave was on during chapel break (it was a Southern Baptist Liberal Arts school - an oxymoron I know) which no one went to. We used to do bong hits and watch Letterman praying Larry "Bud" Melman would be on.

TomInJax - Those early Letterman shows when he was on in the morning were the most hilarious TV ever! Roll on the floor laughing funny. I thought that Conan O'Brien was most like those early Letterman shows for a while - original, quirky, fun and funny. Not many people saw or remember those morning Letterman shows but it's a great TV memory for me. People who make us really, really laugh are etched in our memories forever.

I'm gonna have to start recording that show. Besides clips, I haven't seen an episode in years.
