Reuters:

Internet search giant Google Inc is known for hosting the most extravagant holiday parties in Silicon Valley, often drawing crowds of over 10,000 and prompting some employees to post ads for party dates on classifieds Website Craigslist.

But even Google has decided to scale back its holiday celebrations this year due to a global economic downturn and an ever-expanding workforce that had grown to 20,000 in October, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Aww, poor privileged twentysomethings. Perhaps some meaningful volunteer work is in order, instead of spending time posting witty verbiage and cutesy pictures on Facebook.

What is your problem? What is "privileged" about being employed by Google? It is a great career achievement based on skills and talent in my mind, it is not a privilege. One of the best companies out there, and one of the more socially responsible. As most businesses, they are also hurt by the recession.
Some people get happy only when they see misery around.

How much shareholder value did the purchase of a Boeing 767 and 757 create?

Ahhh, those wage suppression tactics by corporations and government sure have worked out well, dontcha think? Yo, "shareholders" and "investors", how does your portfolio look now? Turns out shipping good jobs overseas and paying workers here a pittance doesn't have a perpetual upside. And please, quit squealing about your taxes, its very unseemly.

Many companies here in the Silicon Valley are enforcing a longer than usual Christmas Holiday plant closure. Employees will get Christmas Holiday pay but they must use accumulated vacation days to cover the rest if they want to get paid.

Google and the automakers, including many others making up the supply-side, are feeling the effects of a contraction from the demand side of the economic equation -- something Washington politicians (principally Republicans) arrogantly ignored.

Without demand, supply means almost nothing. If I have an orchard of pears to sell and there is nobody to buy them (the demand), I am out of business. The present recession we are in is the direct result of giving far too much to supply-side and too little to demand. The median family income has been dropping for years along with wages. What the average worker is handed, instead, is a credit card. This is made even worse by offshoring and labor arbitraging under the rubric of free-trade.

I hope Google's management considers that without demand, their company is dead as will be most companies in the U.S. Time for change -- we need a new economic policy.
