MIAMI — A college student committed suicide by taking a drug overdose in front of a live webcam as some computer users egged him on, others tried to talk him out of it, and another messaged OMG in horror when it became clear it was no joke. Some watchers contacted the Web site to notify police, but by the time officers entered Abraham Biggs' home _ a scene also captured on the Internet _ it was too late.

Biggs, a 19-year-old Broward College student who suffered from what his family said was bipolar disorder, or manic depression, lay dead on his bed in his father's Pembroke Pines house Wednesday afternoon, the camera still running 12 hours after Biggs announced his intentions online around 3 a.m.

It was unclear how many people watched it unfold.

Biggs was not the first person to commit suicide with a webcam rolling. But the drawn-out drama _ and the reaction of those watching _ was seen as an extreme example of young people's penchant for sharing intimate details about themselves over the Internet.

Biggs' family was infuriated that no one acted sooner to save him, neither the viewers nor the Web site that hosted the live video, Justin.tv. The Web site shows a video image, with a space alongside where computer users can instantly post comments.

Only when police arrived did the Web feed stop, "so that's 12 hours of watching," said the victim's sister, Rosalind Bigg. "They got hits, they got viewers, nothing happened for hours."

She added: "It didn't have to be."

An autopsy concluded Biggs died from a combination of opiates and benzodiazepine, which his family said was prescribed for his bipolar disorder.

Biggs announced his plans to kill himself over a Web site for bodybuilders, authorities said. But some users told investigators they did not take him seriously because he had threatened suicide on the site before.

Some members of his virtual audience encouraged him to do it, others tried to talk him out of it, and some discussed whether he was taking a dose big enough to kill himself, said Wendy Crane, an investigator with the Broward County medical examiner's office.

A computer user who claimed to have watched said that after swallowing some pills, Biggs went to sleep and appeared to be breathing for a few hours while others cracked jokes.

Someone notified the moderator of the bodybuilding site, who traced Biggs' location and called police, Crane said.

As police entered the room, the audience's reaction was filled with Internet shorthand: "OMFG," one wrote, meaning "Oh, my God." Others, either not knowing what they were seeing, or not caring, wrote "lol," which means "laughing out loud," and "hahahah."

An online video purportedly from Biggs' webcam shows a gun-wielding officer entering a bedroom, where a man is lying on a bed, his face turned away from the camera. The officer begins to examine him, as the camera lens is covered. Authorities could not immediately verify the authenticity of the video, though it matched their description of what occurred.

Montana Miller, an assistant professor of popular culture at Bowling Green State University in Ohio, said Biggs' very public suicide was not shocking, given the way teenagers chronicle every facet of their lives on sites like Facebook and MySpace.

"If it's not recorded or documented then it doesn't even seem worthwhile," she said. "For today's generation it might seem, `What's the point of doing it if everyone isn't going to see it?'"

She likened Biggs' death to other public ways of committing suicide, like jumping off a bridge.

Crane said she knows of a case in which a Florida man shot himself in the head in front of an online audience, though she didn't know how much viewers saw. In Britain last year, a man hanged himself while chatting online.

In a statement, Justin.tv CEO Michael Seibel said: "We regret that this has occurred and want to respect the privacy of the broadcaster and his family during this time."

The Web site would not say how many people were watching the broadcast. The site as a whole had 672,000 unique visitors in October, according to Nielsen.

Miami lawyer William Hill said there is probably nothing that could be done legally to those who watched and did not act. As for whether the Web site could be held liable, Hill said there doesn't seem to be much of a case for negligence.

"There could conceivably be some liability if they knew this was happening and they had some ability to intervene and didn't take action," said Hill, who does business litigation and has represented a number of Internet-based clients. But "I think it would be a stretch."

Condolences poured into Biggs' MySpace page, where the mostly unsmiling teen is seen posing in a series of pictures with various young women. On the bodybuilding Web site, Biggs used the screen name CandyJunkie. His Justin.tv alias was "feels_like_ecstacy."

Rosalind Bigg described her brother as an outgoing person who struck up conversations with Starbucks baristas and enjoyed taking his young nieces to Chuck E. Cheese. He was health-conscious and exercised but was not a bodybuilder, she said.

"This is very, very sudden and unexpected for us," the sister said. "It boggles the mind. We don't understand."

Don't be so quick to judge. Most of the people who saw this probably thought it was just an attention getting stunt, and those who suspected it was real were supposed to do what exactly; call the police and tell them some guy somewhere in Broward County just swallowed a bunch of pills? Honestly, I wouldn't have known to contact the moderator.

This may not seem fair to some, but if they were physically in the room with this young man, the ones who were watching and did nothing to alert anyone, we all know 99-100% of them would have tried to stop him from carrying this act out. Incidents like these break the fourth wall of the internet and drive home the need for people to understand there is no excuse for inaction, for complicity in what could and can be an avoidable incident. Imagine how his family and friends are devastated, and now understand, those whom watched and did nothing, that they can find out that you were in the room with him and chose to look the other way, when there was a chance for him to get the help he needed. Shame on all of those that turned their heads to his cry for help, i hope those who in fact egged him on are prosecuted, much like i hope that mother who told that poor teenage girl to kill herself who so did, will hopefully be.
True heartfelt sorrow and empathy to his family and friends who did not deserve for him to transition like this, in front of many who simply did not care to help. We're all fragile, not just people who are bi-polar and/or manic depressive. Have some compassion.

I'm so sorry for Abraham and his family. My brother was diagnosed with bipolar and we lost him to suicide three years ago.

There needs to be greater public awareness of how strong the risk of suicide is with bipolar disorder, and of how challenging it can be to find and maintain the right balance of medication for each individual. It is usually a trial-and-error approach in which an "error" tragically increases the already high risk of suicide.

Mental illness requires compassion and treatment, not ridicule, cruelty, and apathy. If someone claims to be suicidal, especially if you know they have bipolar disorder, take them seriously.

I am very sorry to hear of your loss as I am equally sorry to hear the loss of this you man. SV28 you do bring on a very good point. There does need to be a greater public awareness of how strong the risk of suicide is with bipolar disorder. Thank you for taking the time to post and share your experience with us.

I have worked in mental health for over twelve years as a clinical social worker and have worked closely with psychiatrists and there is no reason that any patient with a mental illness would be given opiates. Opiates are pain killers, they do nothing for useful for your mood. Also, benzos are good for anxiety, but not for mood. The tragedy of this young man's actions is one thing, the prescribing doctor giving this man drugs that would not do anything for bi-polar disorder is another. I was hoping that this article was going to end up as a hoax so that I could be pissed at someone's juvenile behavior. My heart goes out to this man's family and friends.

You are correct. I highly doubt those were prescribed by a physician. We do not know what was going on with him medically with any certainty. But his passing makes me very sad. My condolences to the family.

It's easy to not see something like this coming especially when someone has bipolar disorder.

the mood can change that quickly and crash hard and besides that there is also a desire to not come forward when help is needed because there is a fear of the stigma involved with bipolar disorder.

i've been there but someone got to me in time.

I'm sorry for both him and his family that he wasn't as lucky.

Having the right doctors and medication, along with support is crucial for people that are diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

"I have come to believe that my life has all been meaningless. I keep trying and I keep failing."

Parents need to teach their children that the things that are truly worthwhile in life never come easy. A tough task in a society where instant gratification and status trumps effort and determination.

I've been kicked in the teeth and rebounding from running into brick walls my entire life but with determination managed to put together a decent life.

Sad story

I agree that it's important for parents to give their children what they need to withstand the ups and downs of life. I have to say, though that those lessons have limited power when someone is faced with a disease like bipolar disorder. I know. I've been living with it myself.

This breaks my heart. My younger brother was also bipolar. There was no way to get treatment for him. He had no insurance and was too old to be on Mom's policy. I tried to involuntarily commit him but the hospital could only keep him for 3 days.

He hung himself one cold winter afternoon a few days before Mom's birthday. Mom found him. It was horrendous. I cannot imagine how much worse it would have been had others been encouraging him for their own sick entertainment.

I also send condolences. My nephew is schizo-affective. It must have been sheer hell trying to manage your brother without insurance. Even with great insurance that pays for all the meds and hospitalizations, my nephew's life is a mess and (sadly) probably always will be. He is needy, paranoid, delusional, angry, and difficult to even be around even though you can't help but feel sorry for him. There are days when (god help me) I wish he would take the easy way out.

Your brother has found peace. I hope you and your mom can bring yourself to look at it that way.

Your inability to get treatment for your brother is a terrible indictment of this society. It's simply unconscionable and criminal.

My sincere condolences to you and your family.

My adult son suffers from schitzo-affective disorder and I am tempted to share a few stories myself - including his suicide attempt. But it's too painful. My boy is drawing SSI and living in an adult foster care facility now. It took years to get him into the system. He's luckier than most, yet still has major problems.

Attitudes toward mental illness are changing, and I yearn for the day when everyone who needs help can get it before tragedies like this, and yours, happen.

My heart goes out to his love ones. I have a family member who has attempted suicide twice and luckily he has gotten medication and seems to be doing much better, but I know the possibility of him trying it again is always there. I can't imagine losing someone I love this way and then knowing that people watched and made a joke out of it...it's beyond disgusting!

I will never understand how people can be so uncaring. I read a story a few weeks ago where a boy in the UK jumped from a parking garage and a group of teens egged him on for hours and then took photos and videos with their cell phones when he finally jumped. What if one of them had reached out to him and showed him some compassion? I can only imagine what a dark place you must be in to attempt to take your own life and then to have people seem to want you to do it for their own entertainment is heartbreaking :-(

This is what happens in an overly compliant population.. Millions of children take a drug to make them more compliant with an Authority Figure.. regardless of the intent and motivations of the Authority Figure.

Where did this young boy get the combination of drugs that he took? Benzodiazepenes are prescription drugs, but opiates? The combination should not have been prescribed together.

This is sad, beyond reason. However, I saw the documentary about suicides on the Golden Gate Bridge and most people just watched as while individuals climbed over the barriers and jumped to their death. I'll give them a break because they were probably in shock, watching a suicide in real time. Watching this unfold via webcam and not intervening is criminal.

They were watching him on a monitor, where nothing seems real. And although I believe quite a few of those viewers are ashamed of themselves now, it wasn't so long ago (historically) that public executions were gruesome entertainment. I'm not that surprised.

So, can they trace the people watching and prosecute them?

I believe it is called depraved indifference.

Not if they (the viewers) were smart. That's what proxies (like TOR) are for (that and getting past school filters and the like).
