MIAMI — A college student committed suicide by taking a drug overdose in front of a live webcam as some computer users egged him on, others tried to talk him out of it, and another messaged OMG in horror when it became clear it was no joke. Some watchers contacted the Web site to notify police, but by the time officers entered Abraham Biggs' home _ a scene also captured on the Internet _ it was too late.

Biggs, a 19-year-old Broward College student who suffered from what his family said was bipolar disorder, or manic depression, lay dead on his bed in his father's Pembroke Pines house Wednesday afternoon, the camera still running 12 hours after Biggs announced his intentions online around 3 a.m.

It was unclear how many people watched it unfold.

Biggs was not the first person to commit suicide with a webcam rolling. But the drawn-out drama _ and the reaction of those watching _ was seen as an extreme example of young people's penchant for sharing intimate details about themselves over the Internet.

Biggs' family was infuriated that no one acted sooner to save him, neither the viewers nor the Web site that hosted the live video, Justin.tv. The Web site shows a video image, with a space alongside where computer users can instantly post comments.

Only when police arrived did the Web feed stop, "so that's 12 hours of watching," said the victim's sister, Rosalind Bigg. "They got hits, they got viewers, nothing happened for hours."

She added: "It didn't have to be."

An autopsy concluded Biggs died from a combination of opiates and benzodiazepine, which his family said was prescribed for his bipolar disorder.

Story continues below

Biggs announced his plans to kill himself over a Web site for bodybuilders, authorities said. But some users told investigators they did not take him seriously because he had threatened suicide on the site before.

Some members of his virtual audience encouraged him to do it, others tried to talk him out of it, and some discussed whether he was taking a dose big enough to kill himself, said Wendy Crane, an investigator with the Broward County medical examiner's office.

A computer user who claimed to have watched said that after swallowing some pills, Biggs went to sleep and appeared to be breathing for a few hours while others cracked jokes.

Someone notified the moderator of the bodybuilding site, who traced Biggs' location and called police, Crane said.

As police entered the room, the audience's reaction was filled with Internet shorthand: "OMFG," one wrote, meaning "Oh, my God." Others, either not knowing what they were seeing, or not caring, wrote "lol," which means "laughing out loud," and "hahahah."

An online video purportedly from Biggs' webcam shows a gun-wielding officer entering a bedroom, where a man is lying on a bed, his face turned away from the camera. The officer begins to examine him, as the camera lens is covered. Authorities could not immediately verify the authenticity of the video, though it matched their description of what occurred.

Montana Miller, an assistant professor of popular culture at Bowling Green State University in Ohio, said Biggs' very public suicide was not shocking, given the way teenagers chronicle every facet of their lives on sites like Facebook and MySpace.

"If it's not recorded or documented then it doesn't even seem worthwhile," she said. "For today's generation it might seem, `What's the point of doing it if everyone isn't going to see it?'"

She likened Biggs' death to other public ways of committing suicide, like jumping off a bridge.

Crane said she knows of a case in which a Florida man shot himself in the head in front of an online audience, though she didn't know how much viewers saw. In Britain last year, a man hanged himself while chatting online.

In a statement, Justin.tv CEO Michael Seibel said: "We regret that this has occurred and want to respect the privacy of the broadcaster and his family during this time."

The Web site would not say how many people were watching the broadcast. The site as a whole had 672,000 unique visitors in October, according to Nielsen.

Miami lawyer William Hill said there is probably nothing that could be done legally to those who watched and did not act. As for whether the Web site could be held liable, Hill said there doesn't seem to be much of a case for negligence.

"There could conceivably be some liability if they knew this was happening and they had some ability to intervene and didn't take action," said Hill, who does business litigation and has represented a number of Internet-based clients. But "I think it would be a stretch."

Condolences poured into Biggs' MySpace page, where the mostly unsmiling teen is seen posing in a series of pictures with various young women. On the bodybuilding Web site, Biggs used the screen name CandyJunkie. His Justin.tv alias was "feels_like_ecstacy."

Rosalind Bigg described her brother as an outgoing person who struck up conversations with Starbucks baristas and enjoyed taking his young nieces to Chuck E. Cheese. He was health-conscious and exercised but was not a bodybuilder, she said.

"This is very, very sudden and unexpected for us," the sister said. "It boggles the mind. We don't understand."

Isn't there a section on Obama's website where people can express their concerns? I'm sure it won't do much, but I would at like to do my part by writing about the mental health system we have in this country. It REALLY needs to be a priority in this country. Can someone please give me a link?

It is far easier to get all the guns and ammunition you want than it is to get mental health care in this country.

Depends on what you mean by Mental Health Care... Mental Health in this Country consists of visiting your "Prescriber" and choosing from a colorful assortment of Mood Altering Chemicals and free trial coupon....

On the Obama-Biden transition website you can easily add your suggestions. Go to the Agenda items list at the bottom and click on Health Care, or use this link.

What the hell wrong with people?! What if that had been someone you loved, my God! Whether you think this person is being serious or not - call for help! Is that difficult?! And I have no words, but just complete and utter disgust for the people that were encouraging him. Bipolar disorder is a very serious issue and it is vital that we spend the money that is needed for this disorder.

If I had been a witness to this I probably would have thought it wasn't real. But still, to encourage someone to kill themself is so horrible it is beyond imagination. This story makes me sick to my stomach.

This is a disgusting situation. To hear that people egged him on makes me sick. This just goes to show us that there is a lowering premium on human life. My prayers are with his family.

Cop responds to a suicide call by entering with his gun drawn.

That sums up American 'law enforcement' right there.

in the most respectful way i can say this,

you need to educate yourself:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suicide_by_cop

http://www.karisable.com/crle.htm

police are most at risk responding to domestic violence calls and these sorts of calls

i , like you, don't like some of what we've seen lately from law enforcement - but i don't want to be caught making huge generalizations that cannot hold up when confronted with facts.

Frenbar, you have to realize that the office was not watching the video-feed, but simply responding to a call that most likely offered only sketchy details at best. The office has no idea what to expect on the other side of the door before going-in.
He was only acting to protect himself so he could go home at the end of the day.

I've run on ambulance calls since the mid 80's and I can tell you that very often the scene we
encounter is much different than what it seems we where dispatched too. Officers have to be prepared for anything no matter what they are told before they get there.

Having worked on an ambulance and entered rooms ONLY after the cops had.

I find nothing wrong with that.

Since I have concluded, US national politics is insane; I have become politically active up to a County level. One item of local political focus is public health. Included in the public health agenda is mental health. The experience of my involvement has been enlightening. The societal hurt is not limited to a mixed up kid or a broken bum. There is no restriction with respect to income, occupation, or position in society. The problems are greater than commonly held beliefs. The problems are another "elephant in the living room" that has to be faced.

As a police officer I often have to walk into this type of situation more then I would ever like too, however it is the fact people were viewing this I find disturbing. If he knew people were watching, then it was more the reason to go through with this.

Our society is a little sick. Mind you most people do not see it, still you have to admit the morbid curiosity these people showed in watching and even egging him on bothers you as much as it does me. What sad little people. They are so disconnected with reality through the internet they would actually push someone into killings themselves.

Reason why I will not retire a police officer right here.. Not the person who killed themselves, no the people who watched it are the cause.

good post. i understand some of them might have thought it was fake and possibly just a way to get attention, but who in their right mind wouldn't notify someone? you are totally right...i think people are desensitized and don't understand the reality of things, or are just so apathetic, they don't care. i'm sure the people who were egging him on do feel badly now though.

it's easy for some people to say that it would have happened regardless, but obvioulsy this man was reaching out by doing it online, and would they be saying the same thing if it had been one of their relatives?

and thank you for your service. you have a tough job and not many people could do it.

People have always been sick. Note the Gladitor games, the Feeding of the Christains to the Lions. In the early 80's I worked in Salt Lake city and a suicide climbed to the top of some scaffolding on a tall building threatening to jump. As rescue workers tried to talk him down several of my co-workers were encouraging him to jump.

Yes, It made me really sick. I broke down crying and called them a lot of not nice names. I don't think I spoke to any one of them ever again.

Inevitably, when someone commits suicide, everyone begins to point fingers. Unless you've been clinically depressed, you can't imagine how dark it can get and what it's like on a day to day basis. It's a perpetual blackness that covers everything, your mind, your heart, your surroundings, your relationships...everything. Life is utterly painful to live and it becomes unbearable. Sometimes drugs/therapy simply don't work and if someone really wants to die, they will. The method doesn't matter.

Some of us manage to find the light before we make such decisions. I'm sorry this young man didn't.

i agree. too often people treat mental illness as if it's trivial or doesn't really exist. they're just lucky enough to have never gone through it themselves. you know, everyone hates on the pharmceutical companies, but they've saved lives and the quality of life for many people.

mental illnesses deserve the same treatment as physical illnesses. hopefully one day we will have better treatment for these debilitating disorders.

Mental illnesses are physical illnesses. More specifically, neurological (though often there is a physiological basis that negatively impacts neurological processes).

The human body is a complex chemical system. Every thought, feeling, and emotion is chemical. The problem with the pharmaceutical approach is that it causes positive and negative chemical changes to the system. It's really quite primitive, but it's the best we can do today. As we improve our understanding and technology, we'll get better and better at treating problems.

Arianna or HuffPost staff should consider including links to Suicide prevention / outreach as a "public service" when hosting these types of suicide pieces, like seriously.

This is heartbreaking. I was a complete mess a few years ago, so I understand the mind space. I stopped using the pills the doctors prescribed because they just did more harm than good.

It's so sad that the people didn't take this young man seriously. When someone says they're going to take their own life, I urge people to take if very seriously. It is so heartbreaking that no one believed he would do it, and actually egged him on. Our mental health care system is sadly lacking in this country. Look at the amount of young people, closeted teens, and war vets who kill themselves every week. It is a tragedy.

Respect the privacy? of the broadcaster and his family? I beg your pardon? You mean the person that made an ultimate act of privacy so obscenely public? Oh, that.

Sincere condolences to the family. Always such a tragic way to resolve something.

When we're young, we believe every problem will last forever and we have no reference for the term "forever." When we're old, we know full well what "forever" means and we laugh at how stupid we were back then. In a world where we can kill people in video games and then go back and kill them again, our young people have no concept of death. I've been a firm believer in bringing children to funerals as they get older for the simple fact it shows them exactly what "forever" is. This story should bring all of us to a fuller realization of just how much attention we need to pay to our family and friends who say they are depressed. Depression is a red flag and these people need our help in finding their way. Hug your child today!
