Aides to Al Franken's campaign said on Friday that the deficit they face against Norm Coleman in their Senate recount is now less than 100 votes.

"It is fair to say that Norm Coleman's lead is now in the double digits," said Marc Elias, a lawyer for the campaign. He added, more optimistically that, "there are more Democratic areas with votes left to be counted than Republican."

The Franken math is not official. They are basing their findings both on the 51.1 percent of the state-wide recount that they have completed, but which is not reported by the Secretary of State, as well as a portion of the 800-or-so contested ballots that they believe will be easily resolved.

The dwindling margin separating the two camps, however, is making for high political drama. If Franken's numbers are to be believed, the Democratic challenger has more than halved his deficit with just over half the recount completed. The election, in short, could be decided by a single digit difference, though there is no telling if the margin will continue to close at the same pace.

All of which has upped the ante when it comes to contesting each and every vote. For the first time since the recount commenced, aides to Franken made a specific example of what they thought was a concerted effort by the Coleman campaign to frivolously challenge very specific ballots. Holding up sample ballots for members of the press, Elias noted that on ten separate occasions the Minnesota Republican had contested votes simply because the individual backed both John McCain and Al Franken.

"It must be heartbreaking that there were people who voted for John McCain and not Norm Coleman," he said. Elias went on to note that each side had likely challenged many ballots where the intent of the voter was clear. But in this instance, he added, the Coleman campaign's challenges seemed "more pattern-istic than over-exuberant."

If, in fact, the election boils down to a matter of determining the intent of a handful of voters, observers say that the campaigns could resort to court order for what would be, in effect, a second recount. In this instance, the Court would look at a much narrower batch of ballots and -- ostensibly -- have a specific set of standards for counting for whom the vote was determined.

It's interesting to learn what kind of things people write/ do on the ballots.
What's so hard about casting a vote the right way?

and to think .. some of these idiots stood in line for hours just to have their
votes voided . and perhaps denied someone else a chance to vote because
they may have not wanted to wait.

I poll watched for the first time and it's an eye opener! I'd suggest it at least once if you haven't done it before.
Nothing partisan, but the thing I saw that sticks with me most is a middle-aged couple came in together, did paper ballots (same as used in MN) and he "checked her answers" before she slid it into the machine. Apparently her answers weren't good enough, because HE went to a poll judge and said SHE made a mistake - went through the whole rigamarole of sealing the "incorrect" ballot and receiving a new one. At one point she tried to speak and he hit her from behind. HE went back to the booth with her to help her vote, at which time I stepped in and made him begin the process of filling out paperwork to assist someone else with their vote. By the time he was done arguing with the poll judge, she was finished with whatever she decided to vote and put the ballot in the machine.
You just don't know what was happening for some of these! But the person may have been trying to get their intent across without getting beaten up by their spouse!

I don't know what to make of this. Obviously, before an election, a campaign source would be trying to put the best spin on things, but at this stage, it's all about facts and statistics.

It's not as if rallying supporters is going to do anything at this stage.

>It's not as if rallying supporters is going to do anything at this stage.

Well, to a certain degree it is. Both campaigns are still hustling donations to pay for the expenses (the Franken campaign has a lawyer onsite at every location where recounts are being done), and both need to keep their volunteers enthusiastic enough to ensure they'll have the people to monitor the recount.

This could actually end in a tie. What then, a coin toss? Do-over? How about 2 falls out of 3? Al would wipe up the mat with Coleman.

Yes, it actually is a coin toss, by Minnesota law.

They need to have a "joke off". Both contenders would do stand-up for 10 minutes and see who got the most laughs....

Hope it won't be decided by who can tow a truck with their store-bought teeth. If it is, Al may be in trouble.

GO AL!
Seems Mr. Coleman already signed a letter with other repub senators threatening President Elect Obama that if he doesn't govern the way repubs want him to, they'll cause him nothing but trouble.
Now, I'd think that Mr. Coleman would have waited until all of Minnesota's voters have been heard from, but apparently if you're arrogant enough to sneer at the duly elected president like that, you're arrogant enough to ignore votes.
So, Al, it's my sincere hope that you win this for many reasons, but I hope that one of the first things you do is scratch Mr. Coleman's name of that stupid republican letter.

Most really sharp comedians are highly intelligent. I think it's one of the prerequisites for success in the job. Can you imagine GWB doing standup for a living? He'd be out of work in a week because he just doesn't get it!

I thought GWB DID do stand-up for a living. Watching him speak without a teleprompter is like watching someone do a send-up of him on SNL. He's his own best mimic....

I agree and I think Franken would be great as a U.S. Senator but after the votes are recounted, Coleman will still be the winner.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:01 PM on 11/21/2008

LiberalDuke; why would you say Coleman will still be the winner when they're still counting the votes? Perhaps Franken will clearly win...

I hope this reporting is accurate and not over optimisim on the part of the Franken Campaign. I would like to see Franken win this, but it will be horrible if either of these candidates loses this election by only a dozen or so votes. Is there a runoff provision in the Minnesota election laws?

Nope. Not even in the case of a tie -- which (apparently) gets decided by a COIN TOSS. Yay for democracy!

I suspect that one of the reasons Coleman is fighting this at all is to defray attention from his pending legal woes.
However, if the recount goes in his favor, which I currently doubt, I will live with it.
But he can expect to be deluged with policy complaints from me and my liberal ilk if his voting reocrd continues on its reckless path!
Go Franken!
Here's to an honest recount!

Good news. A Franken victory would make the holiday season. As for the naysayers who have been constantly attacking Al because of his backround in comedy, they could not be more wrong. He is very knowlegeable about politcal issues and is extremely intelligent. How could that be a negative for the position?

GO, AL, GO!

It shouldn't be but has we've seen, intellect is a hindrance in politics.

Just saw Bill Maher's Religuluos yesterday, he'd interviewed Mark Pryor of Arkansas who said "You don't have to pass an IQ test to be in the Senate."

That was the must honest statement I'd heard from a senator in almost 53 years of life.

It's not his background in comedy it's the fact that I doubt he would make an effective Senator. That said I'd like to see him prove me wrong. If he gets in he's going to have to learn to shut his mouth. I don't want to be entertained by my elected officials, I want them to shut up and do their jobs.
