Aides to Al Franken's campaign said on Friday that the deficit they face against Norm Coleman in their Senate recount is now less than 100 votes.

"It is fair to say that Norm Coleman's lead is now in the double digits," said Marc Elias, a lawyer for the campaign. He added, more optimistically that, "there are more Democratic areas with votes left to be counted than Republican."

The Franken math is not official. They are basing their findings both on the 51.1 percent of the state-wide recount that they have completed, but which is not reported by the Secretary of State, as well as a portion of the 800-or-so contested ballots that they believe will be easily resolved.

The dwindling margin separating the two camps, however, is making for high political drama. If Franken's numbers are to be believed, the Democratic challenger has more than halved his deficit with just over half the recount completed. The election, in short, could be decided by a single digit difference, though there is no telling if the margin will continue to close at the same pace.

All of which has upped the ante when it comes to contesting each and every vote. For the first time since the recount commenced, aides to Franken made a specific example of what they thought was a concerted effort by the Coleman campaign to frivolously challenge very specific ballots. Holding up sample ballots for members of the press, Elias noted that on ten separate occasions the Minnesota Republican had contested votes simply because the individual backed both John McCain and Al Franken.

"It must be heartbreaking that there were people who voted for John McCain and not Norm Coleman," he said. Elias went on to note that each side had likely challenged many ballots where the intent of the voter was clear. But in this instance, he added, the Coleman campaign's challenges seemed "more pattern-istic than over-exuberant."

If, in fact, the election boils down to a matter of determining the intent of a handful of voters, observers say that the campaigns could resort to court order for what would be, in effect, a second recount. In this instance, the Court would look at a much narrower batch of ballots and -- ostensibly -- have a specific set of standards for counting for whom the vote was determined.

The lead-in says the difference is less than 100 but the Star Tribune has never shown the difference below 100 and now, sorry to say, the difference has increased t0 167. Hoping these are Republican strongholds and we get some real movement next week.

Even if he wins, remember that the leaders of the Democratic Party of Minnesota did not support Al Franken with any enthusiasm and it cost him dearly.

Franken needed the legitimacy they refused to provide - particularly popular St. Paul rep Betty McCollum. She may well have cost Franken the election when she publicly questioned his integrity because of his comedic writings. Suddenly, he was a sexist. Speaking of jokes.

But McCollum is typical of the people here. They all have broken arms from patting themselves on the back for being so hip while in truth they don't deserve a guy with Franken's brains. So instead they get Coleman's ethics.

Seems you may be correct. Minnesotans will get what they deserve not what they desire.

Dear Al:

Please remember: "Sometimes you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right"

Find it pretty amazing all the Al bashing going about his abilities, sounds like spur grapes and the fetid smell of desperation! GO AL!

I have to laugh at conservatives...To hear them tell it, they have never lost an election since 1856. When they lose it is always attributable to election fraud or some mysterious skullduggery on the part of Democrats.

Yes, Al will do a great job, but.....I miss him on AAR. Maybe, if he loses, he will be back on the radio. I loved his show.

I am going to love seeing Coleman go down in this recount. He declared himself winner on Nov 4th, knowing that a recount would be mandatory. Then he made it seem as though Franken wanting a recount was a waste of Minnesotans tax money. Then he started spreading allegations of voting fraud by state Dems. He is a one cell organism who needs to be officially tossed out on his a** I am going to enjoy the look on his face when Franken officially wins

The finest moment I can imagine is seeing Rush Limbaugh and Bill O'Reilly having to say....." Senator Al Franken". Doesn't get much better than that.

Maybe its just late; maybe my eyes need to be examined. I just left the Secretary of State's website and as of last evening, he is reporting Coleman up by 40,000 votes. Say what? Even his November 4th results are showing 40,000 as the margin, not 300. What gives?

That's just where the official recount stands. They'e just recounted more of strong Coleman areas. Even still it seems Franken is picking up votes.

An apparently more current result from the Minneapolis Star-Tribune
shows them 147 votes apart with over 50% of the votes re-counted,
Coleman ahead.

Please, everyone don't get your hopes up.The way it's going, it appears that Coleman will retain his lead - albeit by a very, very narrow margin.

Republicans seem to believe every vote counted for Coleman is legit, but not all of Franken's are.

BULLOCKS.....FRANKEN WILL PROBABLY WIN BECAUSE OF THE STATISTICAL LEFT TO COUNT. IMAGINE, COLEMAN WANTED THE COUNTING TO STOP WHEN HE WAS "AHEAD".

hahahahhahahahaha. Bill O' LIEly! You sir, are too much This is literally the most clever comment I've seen in some time. Its not just that its topical, but its so snarky and witty. The right will surely be brought to its knees by this sort of intelligent, well thought out banter...

Not to cast aspersions on politicians or members of political parties, but has there been any investigation into voting-machine chicanery?

All of the ballots I've seen -- and I've seen thousands of them --are clearly marked. Minnesota law requires that the voter's intent be discernible for the ballot to count. In virtually every case -- even the ballots that have been challenged by one campaign or the other -- the voter's intent is clear.

I'm sure they meant to say fewer.
