Franken

Aides to Al Franken's campaign said on Friday that the deficit they face against Norm Coleman in their Senate recount is now less than 100 votes.

"It is fair to say that Norm Coleman's lead is now in the double digits," said Marc Elias, a lawyer for the campaign. He added, more optimistically that, "there are more Democratic areas with votes left to be counted than Republican."

The Franken math is not official. They are basing their findings both on the 51.1 percent of the state-wide recount that they have completed, but which is not reported by the Secretary of State, as well as a portion of the 800-or-so contested ballots that they believe will be easily resolved.

The dwindling margin separating the two camps, however, is making for high political drama. If Franken's numbers are to be believed, the Democratic challenger has more than halved his deficit with just over half the recount completed. The election, in short, could be decided by a single digit difference, though there is no telling if the margin will continue to close at the same pace.

All of which has upped the ante when it comes to contesting each and every vote. For the first time since the recount commenced, aides to Franken made a specific example of what they thought was a concerted effort by the Coleman campaign to frivolously challenge very specific ballots. Holding up sample ballots for members of the press, Elias noted that on ten separate occasions the Minnesota Republican had contested votes simply because the individual backed both John McCain and Al Franken.

"It must be heartbreaking that there were people who voted for John McCain and not Norm Coleman," he said. Elias went on to note that each side had likely challenged many ballots where the intent of the voter was clear. But in this instance, he added, the Coleman campaign's challenges seemed "more pattern-istic than over-exuberant."

If, in fact, the election boils down to a matter of determining the intent of a handful of voters, observers say that the campaigns could resort to court order for what would be, in effect, a second recount. In this instance, the Court would look at a much narrower batch of ballots and -- ostensibly -- have a specific set of standards for counting for whom the vote was determined.

It is funny how many haters are so angry about a recount, calling it "stealing" the election. If counting every vote and doing a recount when the percentage difference between the two candidates is less then 0.5% is "stealing" an election then it just shows the level of contempt these people hold for one of the most important civil duties we have in this country.

Oh, you must mean in the "elections" where 1.) The brother of one of the candidates publicly PROMISED to deliver the state to his brother, and then, by all accounts, actually did. and 2.) The CEO of the company that made the electronic voting machines PROMISED to deliver another state to the (P)resident, and then, by all accounts, actually did.

There is a significant difference between being dissatisfied when several aspects of an election look to have been "rigged" from the very onset, and calling an elections board that has never been prone to "partisan" politics, who work for a Republican Governor "unethical" or "partisan"!

The topper is, even after making these "public accusations" none of the Coleman Camp have the actual nerve to stand behind their accusations. When reporters ask them "point blank" if they really believe something untoward is going on, they quickly backtrack and say they have confidence that everything is being done properly.

Just like their candidate.

btw, nice nickname. Obviously a lie!

As I recall, the problem with 2000 was that there *wasn't* a recount - it got shut down by the SCOTUS.

In this case, it seems that "state's rights" were less important than the Federal. Interesting how that works....

Yes, much better to elect a felon than a comedian... You must be one of those bitter Stevens supporters. Face it, you Grumpy Old Party lost. They were rejected outright except by the bigots and racists of the deep South.

Get used to being the minority in this country.
Get used to accountability.
Get used to dialogue.
Get used to diplomacy.
Get used to Vice-Presidents who don't hide in bunkers.
Get used to a President who is skilled in the use of the English language.
Get used to the Commander in Chief abiding by our Constitution.
Get lost loser.

This is a pathetic position to take. How steal? Where is your evidence that this is being stolen by either party. How about providing a little critical reasoning? Otherwise, it's just more of the same claptrap the right wingers love to spout and nobody will take you seriously.

It was unbelievable how Republicans spun the "ballots locked in the trunk" --largely for Franken--and the "100 votes left off the tally that should have been entered for Franken".

Y'all spin that as FRANKEN cheating!!! ROFL. These were Franken VOTES that Republicans were hiding to inflate Coleman's tally!

It was only the threat of being found out during a recount that got the GOP weasels to come clean.

This will be decided by contested ballots. So, yes, a bit like Florida (but without the SC corruption and Bush-Harris dirty tricks).

r e t h u g s obviously still bitter that so many of them get caught stealing elections and disenfranchising voters while no dems or liberals have been. Remember that guy on Rachel Maddow's show a month or so back, r e t h u g who helped R I G the 2004 election, got caught and did time in prison? He had all kinds of useful info on how to steal elections, and spilled his guts right there on teevee. He made it sound like it's a given the GOP at least tries to steal every election, it doesn't appear to go against their moral principles.

Alternatively, Obama seems to have won by using a brilliant strategy and solid platform.

Poor r e t h u g s, they don't seem to be able to e v o l v e.

The Minnesota Dems should take note for next time when selecting a candidate. There are better qualifications than simple celebrity, or as in this case, a simple celebrity. Coleman is no prize but if the Dems are going to prevail they need to take these races more seriously in the future. Franken is a comedian, not a statesman. Apparently, despite the Republican losses elsewhere, many Minnesota voters recognized that a jokester is not the best candidate for a critical office.

My point is that Franken is totally unqualified for the Senate and just because the Republicans constantly run unqualified candidates doesn't mean the Democrats can get away with the same thing. We need more Obamas and less Frankens. Our talent pool is a lot deeper than the Republicans so why are we nominating bozos like Franken. The Minnesota voters aren't stupid and they're showing their disgust with Franken by not taking his campaign seriously enough to defeat a lame Republican.

This is a joke that they ran Franken. I can't believe there wasn't someone out there more qualified to run against Coleman. This guy is a joke. You think they would have learned after the jesse Ventura fiasco.

Sorry, Franken is practically heroic in my book, severely criticizing the Bush admin. long before it was popular or even safe to do so, and bringing wide exposure to the lies and idiocies of rightwing pundits like Limbaugh and O'Reilly. He did his part to blunt The Destruction, and deserves the office.

"You think they would have learned after the jesse Ventura fiasco."

I'd think they'd have learned from watching Republican ideology send our country into a tailspin. It's unbelievable one Minnesotan would vote for Norm Coleman after that.

Sure I did. In fact it was on Air America that Franken really showed his true colors. Discounted any claims of vote fraud in the '04 presidential election simply because he had his own plans to run for the senate; and joked about African women having AIDS (a snide comment to Joe Conason who was about to take a trip to Africa); and snippy with a middle-aged, overweight woman who lost her son in Iraq. Not a good guy.
