Brennan

Marc Ambinder reported Thursday evening that former National Counterrorism Center head John Brennan is Barack Obama's "favorite to be nominated director of the Central Intelligence Agency." According to Ambinder's sources, Brennan has been vetted and even begun recruiting his team.

The news has alarmed Obama supporters who remember Brennan best for his role in both faulty pre-war intelligence and agreement with Vice President Dick Cheney on torture.

Glenn Greenwald writes, "I'm both entirely unsurprised and basically undisturbed by the fact that Obama's most significant appointments thus far are composed largely of standard Washington establishment figures and pro-Iraq-War hawks." But Brennan is "a different matter."

To appoint someone as CIA Director or Director of National Intelligence who was one of George Tenet's closest aides when The Dark Side of the last eight years was conceived and implemented, and who, to this day, continues to defend and support policies such as "enhanced interrogation techniques" and rendition (to say nothing of telecom immunity and warrantless eavesdropping), is to cross multiple lines that no Obama supporter should sanction. Truly turning a page on the grotesque abuses of the last eight years requires both symbolism (closing Guantanamo) and substantive policy changes (compelling adherence to the Army Field Manual, ensuring due process rights for all detainees, ending rendition, restoring safeguards on surveillance powers). Appointing John Brennan to a position of high authority would be to affirm and embrace, not repudiate, the darkest aspects of the last eight years.

Andrew Sullivan, in a post titled "No Way. No How. No Brennan," adds:

[T]he Republican, former chief-of-staff for George Tenet (who authorized war crimes as CIA head), admirer of Dick Cheney, CEO of the company one of whose contract employees improperly accessed Obama's and McCain's passports, and defender of renditions and "enhanced interrogations" is still Obama's front-runner pick to head the CIA. No, I'm not making this up. ...

Brennan was complicit and naive in the run-up to the Iraq war. And Obama wants to reward him? Brennan is also a believer in Cheney's term "the dark side," wishing merely to have some limits within it. He clearly has a mindset that has far more in common with the war crimes of his former boss than with the clear, and indisputable beliefs of the Obama movement.

...

The least we know is that Brennan is ambivalent about [torture]. Ambivalence on this matter is unacceptable. We haven't fought for decency and reform and a return to American values for so long to be turned back now. We didn't work our butts off to elect Obama only to get Bush another four years at CIA. If Brennan emerges as the pick, those of us against the continuation of war crimes and the prosecution of war criminals will have to oppose him strenuously in the nomination process. We will, in fact, have to go to war with Obama before he even takes office.

Melvin Goodman, a retired CIA intelligence analyst, lambasted Obama in the Baltimore Sun for relying on "discredited cronies" like Brennan.

Blogger and lawyer Anonymous Liberal says he shares their concerns, but he doesn't think the possibility is quite so dire. He points out that Brennan's actual involvement in illegal Bush-era programs is unclear, and that intelligence agencies don't set policy.

Every illegal program and policy during the Bush administration emanated from the White House and was given legal imprimatur by the Justice Department. Regardless of what John Brennan personally thinks about surveillance, torture, rendition, etc., he will only be able to do what the White House and the DOJ authorize him to do. That's why Eric Holder's nomination is reassuring. And if Obama really wants to reassure people like myself, he'll appoint someone with Holder's expressed views (perhaps Marty Lederman?) to head up the OLC.

So long story short, while some of Brennan's expressed views are troubling, his appointment may be more about operational competence than policy or ideology.

I scanned CNN and ABC News and I didn't see any mention of John Brennen's name as a contender for anything. The Obama team hasn't made any statement's about this guy either. Furthermore, Marc Ambinder doesn't even provide names for his Sources. This is just more evidence of crap being thrown out there by the MSM to stir up more drama.

My previous comment not withstanding, I understand that I have been wrong on all the times I second guessed Obama. He is making his picks for a reasong and I am sure the picture would be more clear in time.

I must also note that these are rumors, nothing is set in stone until Obama anounces them and I am sure there would be surprises.

Here's a link to a PBS interview of John Brennan. Overall, seems to match President-elect Obama's views, especially when it comes to the War On Terror. The man seems very reasonable.

The thing about Obama is that he doesnt throw out the baby with the bathwater. This is the guy that admired what Reagan was able to accomplish even though he disagreed with his views. He praised first Bush he praised McCain. I mean during the debate people were mad that he was saying McCain and I agree on this and that. Its who he is he believes in second chances and forgivess it amazes me that liberal progressives stop believing in forgiveness and second chances. People make mistakes even Liberals it doesnt mean they are completely bad people or they have nothing to offer.

believing in forgiveness and second chances refers to one's personal life. it does not refer to putting sadistic warmongers back in responsible positions they have abused. it refers to leaving judging their souls to god. one can be totally forgiving of the girl from abu gharib on a personal level and still oppose her being put back in charge of war prisoners.

I picked Barack Obama because he speaks for me. I don't care what controversial choices he might make to help himself in running the government. As long as Barack Obama does right by the people and the nation, then he's my man!

Whatever he did, it was at the direction of Bush and Cheney - time for all you now president-elects out there to wait and see what the real president-elect does and what results he achieves from his choices.

Its time for the MSM and blogs to come out full force against this.

We did it for FISA, and Obama didn't lose a point.

We did on Lieberman (there would have been no private vote if it wasn't for our pressure), and Obama still sits high.

If Brenan is who he picks, then we must demand that Brenan appologize and condemn torture in all forms BEFORE the appointment is finalized.

If not, then for God's sakes I hope there is a dem out there with spine enough to challenge this in confirmation.

I am leaving this thread because Obama has a way of elevating my blood pressure with these idiotic picks. And I am sick of ranting about them.

I would suggest to stay and bitch, the MSM def read all our posts on Lieberman.

That was the blogosphere attacking the 56 senators, this would be us going after 1 transition team.

Just because Obama won doesn't mean our voices don't count anymore.

I am not at all surprise by this revelation. Obama has continued to surround himself with Clinton flunkies. While the Samantha Powells, the Susan Rices, the John Kerry's and the Richardson's get dump to side.
Seriously, Obama's is breaking my heart.

I hope you know that Richardson and Rice are "Clinton flunkies" as well. They both served in the Clinton administration. Which just shows that you won't find many experienced Dems in Washington that haven't served under Clinton.

Reading this Brennan interview http://news.nationaljournal.com/articles/080307nj1.htm at least shows that Brennan does not have one-dimensional views concerning the complicated issues of national securiy and terrorism.

Wow! Just wow!

Obama hasn't told us who he is picking, so we jump at anything that comes out in the news because it's from "A RELIABLE SOURCE HIGH UP IN THE OBAMA TEAM".

I'll wait until I hear it from Pres-Elect Obama before I start hyperventilating.

For all we know he could be throwing this out there as a red herring and we get so upset and angry then he says no he is not picking this guy but he throws out say a Larry Summers. And folks go OK I dont like him but since he didnt give us Brennan I guess I can take SUmmers. Summers is best for the economy right now inspite of his mistakes but they object to him. I wish they would realize that people make mistakes that not everyone is EVIL and that Obama doesnt see most of these people as inherently evil as they do. They act like they know Obama but they really dont know him. He doesnt hold grudges he believes they are good in people. Heck he wants to confront evil not destroy it like McCain did. Pay attentio to things thats how you know people. He doesn thave this evil streak that many on the left seem to want him to have. But he is brilliant thats why my money is on him. They fall for it all the time.

Thank you spox....this "assuming" is getting ridiculous. Plus....if it were written in stone then there is a darned good reason. There is SO much that we don't have a CLUE about and Obama himself is just now finding out. Have faith in the man you've elected until he proves otherwise. I'm beginning to wonder about all of these so-called Obama loyalists. Not saying that we can't disagree but the man hasn't even taken the oath, and getting b e n t out of shape over speculation is a waste of time and energy.

A bit concerned, but I am going to trust Obama as he has shown himself to be able
to pull together quality people, instill strong loyalty, and get the job done.
His campaign and the people he chose to make it happen did and exemplary job.

He's asked for our support and trust and he's got mine. Until he show's me
otherwise, I believe he know's what he's doing.

I agree with this person, although there are so many qualified people to chose from why would the new President even walk into this area? Chuck Hagel would be the very best guy for this complex job; he disdains torture and is surely a statesman of the highest order. Couldn't we find someone above reproach? Carry on Pres-elect Obama--I trust you, but Senator Hagel is surely a good choice to consider.

I at least knew Obama was not some liberal progressive, and that The CFR, Tri-Lateral Commission and Goldman Sachs and Bilderberg Group, Insurance companies and alike would still call the shots...

At least we stopped McCain and Palin, it was the best we could hope for...
