LONDON — After the wedding in a Scottish castle, the mansion on a green English estate and the drinks in their own pub, Madonna and Guy Ritchie's eight-year marriage ended in a dreary London courtroom.

The case of "Ciccone M.L. v Ritchie G.S." was one of 17 divorce decrees granted by Judge Caroline Reid during a hearing Friday in a harshly lit London court that was over in a few minutes.

There was no legal obligation for 50-year-old Madonna or Guy Ritchie, 40, to attend the hearing at which they were granted a decree nisi, the first of two stages of divorce. There was no sign of the couple and the room was filled instead with journalists tracking the dying days of an A-list celebrity romance. The divorce can become final after six weeks and a day with the granting of a decree absolute.

Court papers signed by Madonna in Los Angeles confirmed that the queen of pop petitioned for divorce on the basis of Ritchie's "unreasonable behavior," and that there is no need to apply family law in the case _ meaning that the couple have reached their own agreements over their assets and children.

Madonna and Ritchie have two children, Rocco, 8, and David Banda, 3, who was adopted from Malawi in 2006. The singer has a 12-year-old daughter Lourdes, from a previous relationship with personal trainer Carlos Leon.

The couple own homes in southwest England, London, Los Angeles and New York.

Madonna and Ritchie appear to have avoided an expensive courtroom battle like the one between former Beatle Paul McCartney and model Heather Mills. Mills has said media coverage of the rancorous divorce had pushed her to the brink of suicide; McCartney compared the process to going through hell.

"Most couples do manage to do what Madonna and Guy Ritchie have done, and sort out issues of assets and children among themselves," said David Allison, a lawyer with London firm Family Law in Partnership. "If they can't it has to go before a judge at a final hearing and the whole process can go on for a year and be very messy."

Madonna and Ritchie, director of "Snatch," "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" and "RockNRolla," married in December 2000 in a secrecy-shrouded ceremony at Skibo Castle in the Scottish Highlands attended by Sting, Gwyneth Paltrow, Donatella Versace and Stella McCartney.

Madonna _ "Madge" to the British press _ and her filmmaker husband soon became rich tabloid fodder in England, where they lived. The pop star seemed to take to English life, spending much of her time at the couple's 1,200-acre (480 hectare) country estate in southwest England, and to some ears, adopting a slight British accent. Ritchie bought a share in a pub _ The Punchbowl in west London's exclusive Mayfair neighborhood _ and Madonna took up a second career, writing a series of children's books called "The English Roses."

But in recent years, reports began to accumulate that they were on the rocks. Over the summer, Madonna was linked _ unfairly, she said _ to the breakup of New York Yankee Alex Rodriguez and his ex-wife Cynthia.

Last month, as Madonna was in the middle of her ongoing "Sticky and Sweet" world tour, the couple announced they were divorcing and the English idyll drew to a close.

Requests for comment from representatives for the couple were not returned.

While anti-gay activists cry about the "sanctitiy of marriage" to justify their bigotry.

Here is a clear example - 8 years of marriage and it's over in a minute in a courtroom. Had nothing to do with the gay people marrying.

It's too bad about Madonna and Guy...I mean really...they have invested so much...but hey, if it's not working for BOTH of them, at least ONE of them needs to be happy...

P.S. I was at last night's Wachovia Center concert...and I must say...it was a fantastic performance...and Philadelphia is one fantastic city!

'm with you here. People are so cruel with their comments, like as if any and everything they read is TRUE. People suffer through these breaks ups no matter how much money, fame or whatever they have. Human beings, no matter what, feel deeply these types of losses.

I really thought this was the guy for Madonna, at least at first. They have a family that will always be a part of their time together and no matter how much they may hate each other's guts right now, there was at some point a deep connection, and that, people forget, hurts like hell. People have just become so freaking jaded and they wanna see others fail, too, because they do. It's sad.

I wish them both, as human beings struggling to find happiness and contentment, healing and happiness again, eventually.

Hope she lost the accent in the deal.

Good for Guy. He got his balls back and doesn't have to follow the rules anymore.

Wizened Old Madonna hunched over trying to decide if her latest conquest is only after her money.
The phone rings, it's her plastic surgeon confirming her latest procedure. She walks over to her closet stuffed with inappropriately aged clothes, she dresses for a meeting with her circle of sycophants.
She glances in the mirror and fleeting wonders about Guy. The man who loved her but could not be controlled. Damn it.

You are referring to a 50 year old whose b@llsy reinvention of herself on numerous occasions has been clever, innovative and served her well. She is not exactly Methuselah. Jealous a little bit?

Transatlantic custody arrangement? That's going to be tough on those kids. The things adults put their children thru. Madonna needs to put the needs of her kids first for once.

Diana Ross married a Norwegian believing they could maintain a marriage while she lived in the U.S and him in the Netherlands. NOT!! It produced 2 kids but the marriage didn't last long at all. In fact unbeknownst to her, he announced his divorce on European TV. It doesn't work people.

Diana Ross' marriage lasted for 15 years. While I agree that it is difficult for a marriage to last when there is a "transatlantic" arrangement.....Diana's marriage lasted twice as long as Madonna's.

Keep the facts straight.

Why is it Madonna who needs to put her kids first? What about Guy? Why should she have to stay in London? The kids have lived in both the US and UK. Couples get divorced and move all the time. Kids adjust if the parents are sensitive to their needs.

Global travel is probably not as tough on kids as it is the adults. Still united parents Brangelina haul their kids across miles and miles of ocean and I guess it hasn't hurt them.

Guy is a decent person from what I've been reading. He is buying a New York home to be near his kids as they share custody. She is keeping her places in London. They are if you don't mind me saying, acting civil for the children, which is a lot more than many other couples do -who get greedy and remain bitter, ...and then the children suffer, ending up with one or the other parent until they are of age to decide who they want to live with, and then by then it is too late to repair the mental anguish they suffer from divorce....therapy sessions begin, and the pain never really goes away, but it does get better. This split up doesn't seem as ugly.

I recently saw a Madonna video while I was at the gym, it was on the "big screen". Poor thing she just looked desperate, she just needs to go away. I don't care if she fills every football field, stadium, whatever, she's an old hag compared to those very young beautiful artist out there now. every time I see her on TV I think of Geritol

Wow! That's some serious coin, a lot of it handed over by her gay fans.

Trust me, if I had this money to put on a show, I could put you in a top hat and tights, and you would bring in the same amount of ticket sales.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:45 PM on 11/21/2008

Funny how no one else can bring the same amount of ticket sales. Not Janet Jackson( who can barely get 1/2 capacity in small arenas), Mariah Carey( who barely can get 1/3 capacity in small arenas) and dozens of other acts who cannot fill an arena much less a stadium. She only wears the top hat and tights for 2 or 3 songs anyway.

Pepsi Center, Denver( 2 nights)- 34,000
Minute Maid Park- Houston- 48,000
Ford Field- Detroit- 39,000

She has sold out stops in Atlantic City, Atlanta, and Miami's Dolphin Stadium before heading to Mexico City to play in front of 120,000.

She was known fondly as Madge in England. Guy Ritchie would have offered to take the blame of 'unreasonable behaviour' - being a courteous sort of chap and a gentleman. But despite putting up with all the weird Kaballah (sp) and other of her control-freak issues, we all know that it all came to a head because Madge has the hots for some American footballer, who has just brought an apartment around the corner from her place in NYC. It is all very sad, but most of all for Madonna as it seems that she is unable to exert any self-discipline on her restless personality.

Restless Personality? That cleaning it up a bit. Basically, she just a horn-dog.

That is rich because it is very well known in England that Guy cheated on her while she was pregnant with Rocco. The woman has given many interviews about it. He is also rumored to be a complete jerk, who has leaked every detail about their divorce. Yeah, real classy.
