WASHINGTON — President-elect Barack Obama and his wife have chosen Sidwell Friends School for their two daughters, opting for a private institution that another White House child, Chelsea Clinton, attended a decade ago.

"A number of great schools were considered," said Katie McCormick Lelyveld, a spokeswoman for Michelle Obama. "In the end, the Obamas selected the school that was the best fit for what their daughters need right now."

She said Sidwell can provide the security and privacy that Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, will need as part of the new first family and Sidwell can help with that. She also said that Sasha and Malia had become good friends with Vice President-elect Joe Biden's grandchildren, who go to the school.

Sidwell is a private Quaker school with a campus in northwest Washington for grades 5-12 and another in suburban Bethesda, Md., for kindergarten through fourth grade. Malia is in fifth grade and Sasha is in second grade, suggesting that the girls would attend schools at different locations.

Michelle Obama and her daughters visited Sidwell and another elite private school, Georgetown Day, earlier this week. The soon-to-be first lady visited both schools last week, without her daughters.

Lelyveld said that while public schools were considered, the Obamas felt that a private school was in the best interest of their children. The two girls currently attend the private University of Chicago Laboratory Schools, where Michelle Obama is on the board.

Michelle Obama went to public schools on Chicago's South Side, and understands the importance of strong public schools, Lelyveld said, and the administration plans to work hard on that issue.

Jimmy Carter's daughter, Amy, went to a public school, but Bill and Hillary Rodham Clinton chose Sidwell for Chelsea. Hillary Clinton later said she received "unfortunately, good advice" that the press would bother Chelsea if she attended public school.

Sidwell Friends has already proven protective of the Obamas' privacy, refusing earlier this week to say whether the girls had visited the school after a motorcade was seen outside.

Messages left with school administrators on Friday were not immediately returned. A woman who answered the phone at the home of Bruce Stewart, Sidwell's head of school, said he was not home. But she said the school would not release a statement before Monday.

Al Gore III, the son of former Vice President Al Gore, also attended Sidwell, where tuition is $28,442 at the lower school and $29,442 at the middle and upper schools.

The quality of the school and its extra security make Sidwell Friends a good choice, said Letitia Baldrige, who was Jackie Kennedy's social secretary and chief of staff during the Kennedy administration. Caroline Kennedy attended first grade in a makeshift third-floor classroom inside the White House.

"The children are under enormous pressure from the press and their fellow students and especially the mommies of their fellow students," who are eager for their children to attend sleepovers, Baldrige said.

"I'm sure they'll both be athletically inclined and play on all the sports teams, and they'll have a lot of fun," Baldrige said. "But it won't be easy."

Rob Lippincott, a member of the board of trustees at Sidwell, where his daughter is a high school senior, said he could not confirm whether the Obama girls had chosen the school. But he said if so, students and parents will be excited.

"We're obviously delighted if that is the case. I have not heard anything officially," said Lippincott, senior vice president for education at PBS. "I'm certainly aware they came and visited. From everything I understand, they'd be a great addition to the school."

A Quaker school. How nice. This choice sends a bad message. Aren't there any safe secular-based private schools in DC?

Read up on the philosophy of the Quakers, it is an excellent choice.

Our son went to a highly regarded Quaker school and our grandchildren go to the same school. Though we are a family of agnostics, their education has been exemplary and the Quaker philosophy is not lost on our grandchildren. In all regards, they are better off for the experience.

Oh screw off. Just because something has religious roots doesn't make it bad. There's nothing wrong with the Quakers, and for the love of God he's a Christian. So look, you're anti-religious, you think religious people or you associate them with backwater republicans. You want to be intolerant and ignorant, fine. There are plenty of intelligent religious people and there's absolutely no basis to the thought process 'secular is always better.' Some of the best universities in this country are run by the Jesuits. Beyond those you have many well honored schools that were founded by Baptists, Methodists, Jews, etc. I am an agnostic and have no tangible religious beliefs whatsoever, but I would send my kids to a Catholic School in a heartbeat. Those schools understand discipline, structure and the self-respect that accompanies actual achievement in a way that public schools, and some secular private schools, in this country do not. This choice sends a bad message ONLY to people like you. I think Obama can afford to lose a few ignorant people along the way. In the end you're no better than Jerry Falwell or Pat Robertson. They think everyone who isn't Christian is inferior; you think all things secular are superior. The three of you are equally stupid.

Good I'm glad the Obama's didnt fall for it and use their children's education to make a statement about public school and those who had hoped that he would have no clue what it means to be a parent first.

We sent our daughter to a public school in a small New England town. She received a fine education, but no way in Hell would we have sent her to a public school In DC. I would have work 3 jobs to give her a private education.

The Obama did what was best for their girls, and I admire them for that.

They should not have to use their daughters to prove a point or to satisfy those who thinks the children should have been sent to public school.

They are GREAT parents.
God bless the Obamas.

where is all this stuff that the media would harass them coming from? I went to a public school, a public school does not have to let anyone they want in!

Its not as if photographers could wander the corridors and nobody can stop them,
They are as open or closed as a private school.

This is just hypocrisy, any time the republicans need to shoot down a move for more public school money or push a vouchers programme al they have to do is point to this.

Clintons third term so far...

What an idiotic comment.

Public schools are surrounded by public space. While photographers and would be assassins/kidnappers MIGHT be exluded from the inside of the school they would be able to set up shop very, very close to doors and windows of that school. Photographers AND snipers would be able to get clear shots.

Even the inside spaces of public schools are not set up for the level of security required to keep these children safe. I seriously doubt that you were in significant danger from Al-queda, white supremacists, anti abortion extremist bombers, or every other variety of nut around like these girls are.

All a would be assassin would have to do is move into the neighborhood served by this school with a child trained to kill (as happens in every middle eastern war we've seen so far). The weapon of choice may not be something that would be easily detected. Public schools MUST allow all students to attend.

The nut jobs decrying the Obamas' choice to value their children more than the positive publicity they could get from choosing a public school, would be the same ones screaming the loudest if something happened to the girls --- telling us what horrible parents the Obamas are.

Family values my a**.

Come on Ind0001. The press wouldn't have to be let "in" the school to cause havoc. Just having them parked across the street and pacing the sidewalks waiting for the girls to come out would be disruptive and a distraction for everyone at the public school. It's hardly hypocracy to send the girls to a school that's geared up for these special circumstances.

I totally disagree. This is not even about quality-of-education, it's about the fact that these 2 little girls need to get a good education without being hassled. I don't think articles like this should even be written. More public school money is about improving the schools so that everyone has a chance to a good education.

In a public school they are not as air tight as you think. You can get in the front door not a problem. As a former teacher, I say many parents show up at my door without going through the office. Parent and other people can get around it even with security. With private schools it is private land, so no one can get through without going through many more security checks then public schools. I am completely in favor of this. Those girls need to be protected in every way possible.

Not true. The public schools in our town all have self-locking doors and intercom systems. No one can get in without announcing themselves.

As a public school teacher myself, I see no problem with President-Elect Obama's daughters going to a private school. These girls are not "ordinary" students, they will be constant targets for some whack-jobs who have something against the President. When President Carter sent Amy to a public school, is was a nice gesture, but it turned into a security nightmare for the Secret Service. The Secret Service have a tough enough job as it is, why not make it easier by allowing the girls to attend a school that can be secured a lot easier than most public schools. Public school by law have to accept any child whose parents come to the office with appropriate residency paperwork. Different people come and go all day in a public school, can you imagine the Secret Service having to deal with this? How about the inconvenience to all the public school parents/children who have to be checked out on a daily basis? Even the very best "blue ribbon"public schools would have a difficult time dealing with all the security requirements.

No chance President Obama's children could attend public school. Too risky for them and the other children - unfortunate, but reality.
That being said, we need strong public schools. To strengthen America we need to emphasize education - and the children of families who cannot afford to send their children to private schools or to pay school fees, or don't have parents who care, should not be disadvantaged.

Education is the strongest ladder a person can have to move out of poverty.
Children with parents who can afford to pay for education are blessed. Many children are not in that position. Our society is only strengthened when education is a priority for all.

The 2 years of service Obama has proposed in exchange for some free University education is one of the best plans I have heard of.
Its a real reward for people who are willing to do the work but don't have the family money to go to college. I was one of those students who had to work 30-35 hours a week at night to pay for university and it was hard and my grades suffered. If I had had the opportunity to put in 2 years of work, pre- University, even if that meant working while doing my service in the evenings and weekends - it would have been worth it to then be able to go to school and not try to work a full time job at the same time.

it hard to send kid to American public schools... im glad they are attending a private school..
we need to start implementing school choice programs and voucher systems..

maybe i just hate the fact that i had to go to a inadequate Los angeles inner city school while there was a better school a block from my house..
if only my parents would have known English to fill out the HUGE STACK OF PAPERS to allow me to attend that school, or maybe we should have broken the law by using someone else's address..

just look at the world people, the BEST public schools in the world are in countries that have some for of school choice.. the American unions have it wrong, its heartbreaking to see 50 percent of the children in my old neighborhood not graduating...

this is why i am a strong supporter of charter schools, and it is also the reason that charter schools are setting a new standard in public education

Yeah that's not remotely true. Unless you're just using circular reasoning and saying that all countries with no private schools to speak of have automatically better public schools. I suppose it depends on how you define the 'best.' But Japan, France, Germany, England all have stellar public schools and they all have well established, well known private schools. Public schools in this country will still suck even if we didn't have private schools. Interfering parents, a lack of funding priorities, a system that awards mediocrity and discourages advanced achievement, spineless school districts who don't back up teachers, and a complete lack of discipline, accountability and actual difficulty with the possibility of real failure have all converged to insure that American public schools will stay right where they are: squarely at the bottom of the barrel.

I'm so glad they didn't fall into the political trap of putting Malia and Sascha in public school. The girls, the parents and the taxpayers don't need the colossal headaches that security in a public school would entail. Also, the girls will be much more comfortable in an environment that is used to celebrity kids rather than one in which they are constantly gawked at. And if it's a privileged environment, who cares... they are, after all, the president's kids.

I think you underestimate the average public school student. If anything they are more likely to be center of attention at a private school.

Perhaps..... I can't say in this day and age. I left school (public) 39 years ago and kids may have changed a bit since then. I know back then, the prez's kids (or, since I was in England, I suppose it'd have to be the Prime Minister's) would not have had a moments peace. Whatever school they do go to, they will not be getting a "normal" childhood anyway, nor will they grow up to normal adulthood. Good luck to them, they are going to live under a magnifying glass, their high position comes with certain penalties.

First of all its a private family decision to where their girls go to school. Secondly as far as Security is concerned I'm sure the Sidwell Friends school offers a much more secure campus. I'm sure that went trough the Obama's mind when they were picking schools for their daughters, so I really don't care and anyone who gets pissed off by the fact that they are sending their children to private school should just grow a pair and not care either.

Before I say "Good Night" to all, let me clarify my comment.

President-elect Obama has publicly stated he is in favor of Merit Pay which
is usually tied to teachers continuing their educations throughout their
careers.

Firing teachers is another matter. Legal issues with
contracts make it a Union concern. However, many tenured teachers have
now retired or will soon and new standards are being put in place for
current and future teachers to prove themselves worthy of their jobs.

I do believe a President Obama will be very good for our Country regarding
EDUCATION.

Note: Public libraries have been underfunded and hopefully Obama can
help here too.

When our son was 6 years old, we made a BIG DEAL out of him getting
his first library card. Equivalent to getting a Driver's License.
Well it paid off.
Read to your children. It is great fun.
Take them to your public libraries.
The old saying about "Books Being Your Friends" is true.

As a former resident of D.C. and a current resident of Chicago, I know from personal experience the complexity of the choices you have to make when you're choosing a school for your kids in these cities. Let's face it. The suck factor on public schools in these cities is really REALLY high.

In D.C., the teachers are of unbelievably low quality, and while they're working on attracting better teachers and getting rid of the dead weight, it's still a huge problem. In Chicago, not only do the teachers suck, the murder rate in the schools is terrifying. One kid from Julian High, a policeman's son, died taking a bullet for a female classmate sitting next to him on the school bus.

My husband and I love city life, but we moved to a suburb 40 miles out of Chicago to get our son into one of the best school districts in the country, where he can thrive academically but also be safe. Unfortunately, we live so far away that nobody wants to come out to visit us, but it's worth it.

Schools don't just magically improve because some politician decides to send his kids there. I don't blame the Obamas one bit for choosing private school for their girls. They don't give two craps about what we think when it comes to the safety and well-being of their daughters. They did what's best for their girls, and good on 'em for it.

Not all teachers in Chicago's Public School System, "suck" and you'll
find some teachers at your suburban school will not be to your liking and
standards. Don't assume anything and become involved in your School District.
Some suburban school districts offered funding for teachers for second
degrees. Nice except..........
after receiving a big bump up in their salaries they
then retired early to get the most from their retirements.
Some school districts insisted upon the retirements
because they didn't want to pay the higher salaries.

Where is the payback to the community?

I don't know which Chicago School District you resided in and your choice to leave the
city is a personal one. However, I know 6 young Chicago Public
School Teachers, all with Master Degrees in Education, making a difference.
These young, highly motivated young professionals are making headway
into bringing higher standards into the school system.

I'm from Chicago's south side but reside on Chicago's North Shore, where
the Public Schools are some of the best in the Country. These
schools combat problems with drugs and teenage drinking.
If a young student dies from a drug overdose, it isn't reported in the news
but is written up as an "unexpected heart attack." It's the way things are done.

All professions need standards and accountability.
Do doctors willing come forward and testify against
the quacks in their profession?
Congress recently applauded Ted Stevens,
the Felon's, farewell speech.
Do "nonproductive" workers get promoted over
deserving individuals?
