WASHINGTON — President-elect Barack Obama and his wife have chosen Sidwell Friends School for their two daughters, opting for a private institution that another White House child, Chelsea Clinton, attended a decade ago.

"A number of great schools were considered," said Katie McCormick Lelyveld, a spokeswoman for Michelle Obama. "In the end, the Obamas selected the school that was the best fit for what their daughters need right now."

She said Sidwell can provide the security and privacy that Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, will need as part of the new first family and Sidwell can help with that. She also said that Sasha and Malia had become good friends with Vice President-elect Joe Biden's grandchildren, who go to the school.

Sidwell is a private Quaker school with a campus in northwest Washington for grades 5-12 and another in suburban Bethesda, Md., for kindergarten through fourth grade. Malia is in fifth grade and Sasha is in second grade, suggesting that the girls would attend schools at different locations.

Michelle Obama and her daughters visited Sidwell and another elite private school, Georgetown Day, earlier this week. The soon-to-be first lady visited both schools last week, without her daughters.

Lelyveld said that while public schools were considered, the Obamas felt that a private school was in the best interest of their children. The two girls currently attend the private University of Chicago Laboratory Schools, where Michelle Obama is on the board.

Michelle Obama went to public schools on Chicago's South Side, and understands the importance of strong public schools, Lelyveld said, and the administration plans to work hard on that issue.

Jimmy Carter's daughter, Amy, went to a public school, but Bill and Hillary Rodham Clinton chose Sidwell for Chelsea. Hillary Clinton later said she received "unfortunately, good advice" that the press would bother Chelsea if she attended public school.

Sidwell Friends has already proven protective of the Obamas' privacy, refusing earlier this week to say whether the girls had visited the school after a motorcade was seen outside.

Messages left with school administrators on Friday were not immediately returned. A woman who answered the phone at the home of Bruce Stewart, Sidwell's head of school, said he was not home. But she said the school would not release a statement before Monday.

Al Gore III, the son of former Vice President Al Gore, also attended Sidwell, where tuition is $28,442 at the lower school and $29,442 at the middle and upper schools.

The quality of the school and its extra security make Sidwell Friends a good choice, said Letitia Baldrige, who was Jackie Kennedy's social secretary and chief of staff during the Kennedy administration. Caroline Kennedy attended first grade in a makeshift third-floor classroom inside the White House.

"The children are under enormous pressure from the press and their fellow students and especially the mommies of their fellow students," who are eager for their children to attend sleepovers, Baldrige said.

"I'm sure they'll both be athletically inclined and play on all the sports teams, and they'll have a lot of fun," Baldrige said. "But it won't be easy."

Rob Lippincott, a member of the board of trustees at Sidwell, where his daughter is a high school senior, said he could not confirm whether the Obama girls had chosen the school. But he said if so, students and parents will be excited.

"We're obviously delighted if that is the case. I have not heard anything officially," said Lippincott, senior vice president for education at PBS. "I'm certainly aware they came and visited. From everything I understand, they'd be a great addition to the school."

OK.

We know where they're going to school. Great. It's a good school. I hope that they and their parents are happy with their decision. Now let's all leave them alone until they graduate.

We have other things to obsess over.

If we had vouchers, could more poor students attend private schools?

This is a state issue so tell us how vouchers are working in your state.
When PA held a vote for Vouchers, it failed.
Why?
The urban areas supported it while the suburban and rural areas didn't.

You think vouchers are some kind of magic bullet? We have vouchers in Florida, where both public AND private schools suck. So what's your point?

Oh Please!!! Our parents worked hard to give us a better life. In some corners of the U.S., the public school system is as good as most private schools. In D.C....not so much. What parent in their right mind would do anything less than give their child the best education that they could afford, let alone two Harvard Law trained parents. What would these tr$lls say had Obama chose political expediency instead and elected to send their kids to public school.

We don't even have to talk about the saftey issue. Common sense dictates that you do the very best by your child.

How will you Libs fix education. The only thing we ever hear is more money. You don't want to fire bad teachers or give merit pay to the good ones. You will not try vouchers because you know they will not work. Am I wrong, or the Lib solution is just keep dumping more money down the hole? I think we have been doing this for years and it's really been working good.

Daniboy, it must be time for you to take your Kool-Aid break.
You are tiring out and saying the same old things over and over again,
even after your questions have been answered.

Do you ever do research before you run off at the mouth. Obama never said he was against vouchers. He said he was for whatever worked.

Bingo! We have a winner!

You just described Barack Obama almost perfectly. This is a guy who has a few, core, firmly held principles. He is completely pragmatic, tilting to neither left or right, on how those principles are put into action, policy or law.

Advance in Chicago Politics? Join Reverend Wright's Church. Associate with Bill Ayers in a quiet, and ultimately deniable, way.

Get the Democratic Nomination for President of the US? Crush Billary and Disown Wright, but only at the last minute and only when you have to. Say you hardly knew Ayers. Become the darling of liberal bloggers. Be ambiguous on as many issues as possible, like vouchers.

Win the election? Tack to the Center.

Govern? Make Hillary your Secretary of State, surround yourself with middle/right economic advisors, make a DLC maven and Clinton WH stallwart your chief of staff....get the picture?

If he sticks to this formula, Barack Obama has the potential to be a truly great president. He'd like our support and endorsement, but won't lose any sleep if we don't like what he's doing, as one of his core principles is that Barack Obama be remembered as one of the great presidents of the United States.

People who are going to expect him to satisfy a particular political or idealogical agenda are going to be disappointed across the board, but pleased on particular issues.

I think Michelle would rather check private schools for changes and improvements. The Obama family will never be dependent on public schools. Their might be a better school out there than Sidwell for her daughters.

Some people really need to get a grip. Obama"s girls were already going to a private school. It's there CHOICE. Both parent can afford it,why not ? I would do the same, and so would most. In other countries people send their children to study abroad. Good education has a high price. I don't put the Obama's down because they can afford to get the best education for the girls.I say good for them.

Language 101: THERE is a direction. "There is good reason to believe Daniboy is a Fox Noise fan". THEIR is possessive. "Their Secret Service agents prefer Sidwell Friends School". THEY'RE is the contraction for THEY ARE. "They're going to private school for security reasons".

That was supposed to read how could Caroline have been in the 3rd grade when she was 6 at the time of her father's death which, incidentally was 45 years ago tomorrow?

How could Carline have been in the 3rd , tomorrow? It was't makeshift it was a co-op Jackie organized with other moms of staffers' kids, and it was a brilliant idea given the ages of her children.
As for vouchers or Obama being elitist-please. Teahers generally do not send ther kids ro public schools unless they are the upper tier. Frankly I wouldn't want my kids going to a school system run by an anti-tenure bureaucrat who wants to punish teachers for the failures of administrators who bloat the system with waste that clogs the arteries of learning resources.

Do you know how many administrators there are in some districts who make three times what a teacher does and manufacture meetings and projects to justify their existence while the teachers and students just want to study and learn?

I always felt that the Obama's major concern would be that their daughters receive a quality
education, and that the secret service would be confident that they could protect the girls.

Agree with your first point. Not sure tho about the protection point. I'm pretty sure that the Secret Service could keep these girls safe in any elementary or middle school anywhere. I mean, like, they're really strong guys and gals...and there are usually a whole lot of them around. They also carry loaded handguns under their jackets and a whole bunch of them have submachine guns or shotguns just out of sight (ever wonder why their jackets bulge?), just to name a few of the little toys that will be within a few feet of these lovely girls at all times. So, I think they'd be safe in any school. The motorcade that will take them to school won't be quite as forbidding as their dad's, but you wouldn't get very close if you tried to run up to the window of their vehicle to get their autographs, if you catch my drift.

In Texas, charter schools have been tried and many have failed while others performed about the same as the public schools. Even one of Bill Gates' projects was recently declared not to be a success when looked at objectively.

Man, I cannot believe that there are people on here angry at that decision!!!! You guys are fookin pathetic. If I was in his position, I would have picked private school. In fact, even if I wasn't POTUS, I would still pick private school. Until public schools prove to be on the same level as private institutions, I would not send my child there. Seriously, some of you need a fookin life

Don't take people like Daniboy too seriously. He's been raving on and on about this all night. Seems the Obama's hit a nerve when they made the obvious decision to both protect and educate their kids. I still can't figure out what he'd do with his children were he president.

Hurray!

I know the girls will love the school. I was hoping they would decide on this fine school. More people need to be aware of Quaker principles and their belief is the value of EVERY ONE.

I attended a Friend's school in Va Bch. You could not ask for a better system of education.

For anyone who is dissing the Obama's and saying this is something an elitist would choose, you are very wrong. My parents struggled to pay our private school fees. I knew perfectly well what we went without so that I could be in an integrated school in the 60's, experience a joy of learning and talk lovingly of our school's place in the community 41 years later. Thank you Teacher Phyllis, Teacher Virginia, Teacher Jean Marie, Teacher Zada, Head Mistress Louise.
