Sidwell Friends School in northwest Washington,Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2008. Michelle Obama and her daughters Sasha and Malia visited their top choices for schools "to make sure we find the right fit." WASHINGTON — President-elect Barack Obama and his wife have chosen Sidwell Friends School for their two daughters, opting for a private institution that another White House child, Chelsea Clinton, attended a decade ago.

"A number of great schools were considered," said Katie McCormick Lelyveld, a spokeswoman for Michelle Obama. "In the end, the Obamas selected the school that was the best fit for what their daughters need right now."

She said Sidwell can provide the security and privacy that Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, will need as part of the new first family and Sidwell can help with that. She also said that Sasha and Malia had become good friends with Vice President-elect Joe Biden's grandchildren, who go to the school.

Sidwell is a private Quaker school with a campus in northwest Washington for grades 5-12 and another in suburban Bethesda, Md., for kindergarten through fourth grade. Malia is in fifth grade and Sasha is in second grade, suggesting that the girls would attend schools at different locations.

Michelle Obama and her daughters visited Sidwell and another elite private school, Georgetown Day, earlier this week. The soon-to-be first lady visited both schools last week, without her daughters.

Lelyveld said that while public schools were considered, the Obamas felt that a private school was in the best interest of their children. The two girls currently attend the private University of Chicago Laboratory Schools, where Michelle Obama is on the board.

Michelle Obama went to public schools on Chicago's South Side, and understands the importance of strong public schools, Lelyveld said, and the administration plans to work hard on that issue.

Jimmy Carter's daughter, Amy, went to a public school, but Bill and Hillary Rodham Clinton chose Sidwell for Chelsea. Hillary Clinton later said she received "unfortunately, good advice" that the press would bother Chelsea if she attended public school.

Sidwell Friends has already proven protective of the Obamas' privacy, refusing earlier this week to say whether the girls had visited the school after a motorcade was seen outside.

Messages left with school administrators on Friday were not immediately returned. A woman who answered the phone at the home of Bruce Stewart, Sidwell's head of school, said he was not home. But she said the school would not release a statement before Monday.

Al Gore III, the son of former Vice President Al Gore, also attended Sidwell, where tuition is $28,442 at the lower school and $29,442 at the middle and upper schools.

The quality of the school and its extra security make Sidwell Friends a good choice, said Letitia Baldrige, who was Jackie Kennedy's social secretary and chief of staff during the Kennedy administration. Caroline Kennedy attended first grade in a makeshift third-floor classroom inside the White House.

"The children are under enormous pressure from the press and their fellow students and especially the mommies of their fellow students," who are eager for their children to attend sleepovers, Baldrige said.

"I'm sure they'll both be athletically inclined and play on all the sports teams, and they'll have a lot of fun," Baldrige said. "But it won't be easy."

Rob Lippincott, a member of the board of trustees at Sidwell, where his daughter is a high school senior, said he could not confirm whether the Obama girls had chosen the school. But he said if so, students and parents will be excited.

"We're obviously delighted if that is the case. I have not heard anything officially," said Lippincott, senior vice president for education at PBS. "I'm certainly aware they came and visited. From everything I understand, they'd be a great addition to the school."

I feel for their girls. Their lives are about to change in a big way. But, they are fortunate that they have the parents they do...I think that their parents will keep their lives as consistent and as normal as anyone can in that situation. I'm sure one of the biggest reasons for selecting this school was security...it is very accustomed to dealing with security issues. I have no doubt that this is their biggest concern with their girls.

I went to public school because that's all my family could afford, became a lawyer, and a multi-millionaire before age 40. I sent my two kids to private school through the 8th grade because I could afford it and I wanted my kids in the best environment possible, The difference between most of us conservatives and you liberals/progressives, is that we want voucher where everyone, rich or poor, can send their kids to a better school. The public school teachers union is one of the core constituencies of the Dem. party and the Obamas, Clintons, Kennedys, etc. want to serve those unions at the expense of everyone elses children but not their own. Most public schools get 2 times more money per pupil than most private schools and turn out an inferior product. The Dems are more interested in continuing to raise pay for lousy teachers so they can keep buying their votes.

Tuition rates in Chicago Catholic schools is more than the funding
given to public schools per student.

Not all public education is affected by teachers' unions. In Texas there are very few actual unions in the sense that they exist in other states. We don't strike and teachers can be fired. There are teacher organizations, but they don't have a lot of power here.

And BTW, even though their Dad is president, their family is rich, and they have attended some of the best private schools in the country, they will get a race preference when they apply to college.

You're wrong about that. You're really behind the times. And FYI, Obama didn't even declare his race on his Harvard app, and he still managed to get in and graduate first in his class.

You sound really bitter. And more than a little bigoted.

I don't think the Obama's are quite in the "rich" league yet - they have only just finished paying off their student loans with the money from Obama's books.

So if the Mayor of DC doesn't send his kids to his own city's PUBLIC school, why in the hell should the POTUS send his girls there?!

Sorry I mistyped.

For the love of God. He can send his children anywhere he wants. And anyone advocating sending his children to public school, clearly wants to bring harm to those precious little girls.

BTW, the Mayor of DC's own twin girls DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT ATTEND PUBLIC SCHOOL. So if the Mayor of DC doesn't send his kids to his own city's private school, why in the hell should the POTUS send his girls there?!

Amen. Thank you for your comment. And, I wholeheartedly agree. Barack and Michelle Obama have every right and perogative to send their children to the school they believe is in the best of their family's interest.

I am sure that 60% of the final school decision was based on security. McCain/Palin caused such hate that everyone - has to be more careful.

Except black liberals.

Remember that CM that made a vid about how he "love the Obama girls" (speaking about their child features)

Obama is President we live in different times than Carter did when his child went to Public School.

Is everybody here for firing bad teachers and giving merit pay to good ones. This would be a good start for Obama.

When kids fail in school, a large part of the blame belongs on parents. Even good teachers can't overcome lack of parental involvement in education. Most inner city schools are failing because of parents, not because of teachers.

AMEN. The number one determinate of success is PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT.

My parents had books at home. We did not watch excess amt of TV. We had subscriptions to magazines and access to the library. My parents cared what we did with our lives. Neither of them came from well-off families but they sure demonstrated what could be achieved when you worked for an education.

You paint with a broad brush and please back up your information with some sources. Your comments sound ray-st and/or bigoted toward people who live in cities. Are there not parents in rural areas who are not attentive enough toward their children?

The fact is that our public school system is out-dated and over-burdened. All children are pretty much expected to learn in the same manner. The system attempts to fit square pegs into round holes. Or they put all kids together in a class regardless of their learning abilities (unless they are placed in Special Ed). IMO, many schools are broken and it starts with the individual school administrations. I subbed for several years and where there were top notch school administrators the children thrived.

No questions asked, I would send my children to the absolute best school I could afford. Period.

It would be a terrible parent indeed to make their choice of schools for their children into a vehicle of pandering to discontented voters. I'm glad that the President-Elect chose to make the difficult, right choice for his little girls. Maybe it wont prove to be that popular, but his children will get the best education possible, something lasting much longer than a news cycle.

How important is it for elite Washington to fix our education system? All their children attend private schools! Maybe Unions are more important than fixing education!

The ugly part of me commented that they would not have qualified. My mom reminded me that Friends would have recognized the need for the children to have support SOMEWHERE and welcomed them with open arms.

I still want to say, they would not have gotten in.. MEAN MEAN MEAN.. pray for my soul.

After years of Bush Bashing, you Libs are on defense. For Baracks sake, I hope your defense improves over what we've seen tonight! Your defense-send your children to public school unless rich enough to send them to a private school. Why would Barack and Biden be in any hurry to fix public schools-their children attend private schools. Vouchers are not good because more students could attend private schools????

I'm not on the defense about anything. I fully respect the right of the Obama's to send their children to the school that suits them best. There is no Obama education policy in place yet, so I don't have to defend it.

Any individual with the right mind would not send their kids to a school where safety becomes a concern not just on their own child but their classmates as well. Their very young kids and their father happens to be the POTUS. This has nothing to do with being a liberal or a conservative...except maybe a bitterness. Where did Bush's kids go...even when he wasn't the president?

Whats the problem? I went to a private school and I plan on sending my children to private school. There are far more opportunities available from private schools. This was a good choice by the Obamas.

I don't believe in public money paying for religious education, as is often the case with charter schools. Get the churches and other purveyors of crackpot religious zealotry out of charter schools, and I would support them. I'm not holding my breath.

To Daniboy and the others The Obama's and Bidens choose these schools because the can afford it. The Obama's are entitle to send their children where ever they wants. The forcing of vouchers is a different thing all together. If you can afford it you can do whatever you want. Isn't that the American Dream the best at all cost? Cindy and John send their adopted daughter to a private school as well.

This is a personal decision for the Obama's. Nuff said!

Give $13000 to parents in DC to send their children to any school. Would we have more private schools? Why not try it?

Voucher might work in DC but here in Chicago where transit cost is rising that might not help. Yes you can get parent a choice but alot of parents might not be able to afford the transit cost. There are other factors. How long is the voucher good for? Parents traveling from work to schools in the burbs.... leaving work when money is tight. Education should not be allowed for the rich but when get mad at the ones who choice what is best for their children? I would love to send my kids to Private school but I can afford it nor with my work schedule if I send my kids to Highland Park the route to get there from the southside of Chicago is hindering as well. Vouchers are not the answer good teachers are where ever they are. Public schools have risk and I do not blame the Obama's for considering that risk. The Obama's have high standards and expectations. They both are Ivy League folks. They expect the same for their children.

Some of you think the girls should be targets in DC public schools, and others think that all the crazies need to know exactly where they'll be every day for the next 4 years. The children of the president have every right to safety and privacy. If we can't give that to them, we don't deserve their father to lead us.

Parents sending their children to private schools understand better than others the problems with public schools. Why do you think they're sacrificing to pay for a private education?

As a teacher in a public school, I'd send my kids to a private school. It doesn't mean I'm not going to continue to work my ass off.

Yeah, right, sure… Shame on Obama for wanting his daughters to receive the best education at a school that has experience with Presidential children. Yeah, what a jerk.

You people need to get a life. Seriously! The Obamas can send their girls to any school they want! I for one would rather have the children home schooled, I am very concerned about their safety

There are many excellent public schools. If you don't like the schools where you live, then move. If you want to send your kids to private schools, I know many parents who make great sacrifices in order to do so, if money is not abundant.

Most of the reasons schools fail have to do with parents.
