WASHINGTON — President-elect Barack Obama and his wife have chosen Sidwell Friends School for their two daughters, opting for a private institution that another White House child, Chelsea Clinton, attended a decade ago.

"A number of great schools were considered," said Katie McCormick Lelyveld, a spokeswoman for Michelle Obama. "In the end, the Obamas selected the school that was the best fit for what their daughters need right now."

She said Sidwell can provide the security and privacy that Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, will need as part of the new first family and Sidwell can help with that. She also said that Sasha and Malia had become good friends with Vice President-elect Joe Biden's grandchildren, who go to the school.

Sidwell is a private Quaker school with a campus in northwest Washington for grades 5-12 and another in suburban Bethesda, Md., for kindergarten through fourth grade. Malia is in fifth grade and Sasha is in second grade, suggesting that the girls would attend schools at different locations.

Michelle Obama and her daughters visited Sidwell and another elite private school, Georgetown Day, earlier this week. The soon-to-be first lady visited both schools last week, without her daughters.

Lelyveld said that while public schools were considered, the Obamas felt that a private school was in the best interest of their children. The two girls currently attend the private University of Chicago Laboratory Schools, where Michelle Obama is on the board.

Michelle Obama went to public schools on Chicago's South Side, and understands the importance of strong public schools, Lelyveld said, and the administration plans to work hard on that issue.

Jimmy Carter's daughter, Amy, went to a public school, but Bill and Hillary Rodham Clinton chose Sidwell for Chelsea. Hillary Clinton later said she received "unfortunately, good advice" that the press would bother Chelsea if she attended public school.

Sidwell Friends has already proven protective of the Obamas' privacy, refusing earlier this week to say whether the girls had visited the school after a motorcade was seen outside.

Messages left with school administrators on Friday were not immediately returned. A woman who answered the phone at the home of Bruce Stewart, Sidwell's head of school, said he was not home. But she said the school would not release a statement before Monday.

Al Gore III, the son of former Vice President Al Gore, also attended Sidwell, where tuition is $28,442 at the lower school and $29,442 at the middle and upper schools.

The quality of the school and its extra security make Sidwell Friends a good choice, said Letitia Baldrige, who was Jackie Kennedy's social secretary and chief of staff during the Kennedy administration. Caroline Kennedy attended first grade in a makeshift third-floor classroom inside the White House.

"The children are under enormous pressure from the press and their fellow students and especially the mommies of their fellow students," who are eager for their children to attend sleepovers, Baldrige said.

"I'm sure they'll both be athletically inclined and play on all the sports teams, and they'll have a lot of fun," Baldrige said. "But it won't be easy."

Rob Lippincott, a member of the board of trustees at Sidwell, where his daughter is a high school senior, said he could not confirm whether the Obama girls had chosen the school. But he said if so, students and parents will be excited.

"We're obviously delighted if that is the case. I have not heard anything officially," said Lippincott, senior vice president for education at PBS. "I'm certainly aware they came and visited. From everything I understand, they'd be a great addition to the school."

Barack Obama supports public schools.

For your kids, not for his.

The public schools are the place for his radical allies to experiment on your kids.

Hope and Change!

SO what!

His kids have always went to private schools. Chicago Lab is one of the best in the nation.
Michelle went to Whitney Young a very high standard Public High School in Chicago. The values that the Obama's want for their children is personal. We should not judge. Also Obama said that Public school should offer a more opportunity just like private schools.

Geeze - why don't you find something to REALLY think about and act on. Your whining about Obama/private schools? Come on - there are such bigger issues. If they were McCain's kids or grandkids, I would want them to be ever so safe. Grow up!

You know, some who aren't even close to being millionaires also send their children to a private school. We did just that and we were living in a good public school system -- we wanted the best of education for our children so we gave up new cars, expensive vacations and ate a lot of macoroni and cheese for a several years to pay the tuitions. It's a matter of priorities in one's life. It was the best investment we ever made for our children as they both went on to fine colleges and so that they now enjoy careers in fields they love. I'd say it was well worth it.

Sore losers just can't resist any opportunity to criticize the Obamas, even their excellent parenting.

We paid our property tax to financially support our local schools and we never whined about that. My husband and I voted YES on every school budget even if it meant an increase in taxes for us. Public education is necessary even if I'm not availing myself of it. I still want to live in a town, state, country where there is quality education for all.

I support public education. I also lived in towns and paid HIGH rents because I wanted my son to go to good public schools. If I had lived around a Friends school, I would have done what my parents did. They sacrificed for years and sent us to one in Va Bch. i knew the cost then and I know the value now. I got the best education hands down.

I never knew there was a box!

I don't see why people would want the girls to go to public school. they are not equipped to handle the security and needs of girls who father is president of the United States.
It is better to send the girls to a place that has experience in handling these needs and knows what to do and how to handle it.
Plus the girls are going to a private school now that is for the University of Chicago where their father was a constitutional professor.
It's best the girls are safe and have their privacy and schooling kept from the media and other who want to pry.

Oh for crying out loud - so what does a private school offer with respect to privacy? Until a politician puts his money where his (or her) mouth is, then they're just a mouthpiece to appease the liberal and conservative masses. Please tell me that a public school is that dangerous ... please acknowledge that the liberal agenda of public education for all is a health hazard ... please tell me

Since you obviously don't live in or near DC, you don't have a clue about the public school system in area. You really sound like a middle school student.

Wow, the right-wingnuts are spilling out of the woodwork. And over something like this? Man, are they desperate. Hello...the man is going to be President of the United States (much to their obvious dismay). His position demands that he send his children to a small, absolutely secure school.

But wait. If you were President, you'd just put your kids on a school bus in front of the White House and send them off to the nearest public school, right? Please. This type of nonsense just shows how many people on the angry Right need to get a life or more to the point...some professional help.

ignorance with only a few posts.

FYI, Obama was not a millionaire when he was a Community
Organizer in Chicago. Read much?

Now go donate some canned or dry goods to a Food Bank
so those "community organizers" can help feed some
hungry Americans.

Your lack of knowledge about Senator Obama and Chicago is amazing.
Are you a former classmate of Palin's?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:13 PM on 11/21/2008

so what's our lack of knowledge about Chicago education, my friend? Perhaps Obama the Annointed one wasn't able to address these issues? Seriously, for politicians to tout education as they're #1 priority, I challenge you to find me one who is credible enough to send their kids to public school - even as a state senator, congressmen ... or even community organizer.

I wouldn't have my kids go to a public school if my life depended on it. And the reason - political saber rattling without providing any real solution. Obama's like the rest of them - the haves versus the have not's. Once you realize your savior is just another stuffed suit, you'll forever live a life of fantasy.

Liberal - conservative - all the same .... you think they're doing this all for you??? They're just trying to hold down a job and some fame on the side.

wow - for someone who is so in touch with the masses, I find it ironic that he has to send his kids to a private school. I don't care what your political affiliation - they're all millionaire hypocrites, and until you liberal and conservative trolls realize this, you're all just a bunch of lemmings falling off into an abyss.

better they are in a private school that has dealt with these situations then create a mass confusion and problems for all in the public schools. They are simply not equipped to handle the security and media that would flock on the school.
A little common sense is needed here and it's obvious you and others here are sorely lacking in that area.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:18 PM on 11/21/2008

and the reason why a private school is more secure than a public one? Get a grip my friend. I went to a public school and I send my kids to a private school - the only real difference ... how deep your pockets are. There's no more security at either.

If you can't secure a public school, then we should just shut down as a society. Pathetic thinking.

When Obama was in the Illinois legislature and a community organizer, his district had the among the worst student proficiency ratings in the world. South Chicago ranked lower than third world countries. Obama gives lip service to the teachers union, but we really know how he stands on public education.

Hey, Jerk!

I am from this part of Chicago's south side and I can tell you Obama has
done a great deal of good in helping to bring about substantial changes.

Where are you from? Are all of the schools in your state terrific, especially
in the poor sections? Does your state unfairly distribute tax money to schools?
And what efforts have you made to bring about positive changes in your own state?

Only talk about things you know.

You have no clue about Chicago or Hyde Park. This was the area he served not the entire southside ( BTW The "Southside" population is larger than the state of Alaska) Get your facts right. As a resident of Illinois and former resident of Chicago I find it offensive that you generalize us as idiots. Read before you speak.

Biden grandchildren go for security reasons too? Is a pattern developing-elite rich go to private-the rest of ya go to public but only because we are concerned about security-we actually believe those unionized public school teachers give a better education than those non-unionized private school teachers.
